For the first time in my entire LinkedIn lifetime… I’m telling you that strictly posting does not work. 

Posting isn’t the growth engine it once was anymore, EVEN FOR CELEBS. You've probably noticed this yourself. 

Posts that used to reach millions of views and thousands of likes for people with over 100k followers? They just aren't reaching people anymore. 

But stick with me, k, cuz I wouldn't be posting if it was all bad news 🤣 . Here's what's changed and what's working for me and my clients right now

Number 1: Strong relationships > big follower counts
Smaller accounts with active audience members often outperform big ones with silent followers.

Why?
LinkedIn pushes content to people who have shown they actually know you, not just people who clicked “follow” once.

I have over 175k followers and am capped at 30,000 connections. HOWEVER, many of my connections are from all the way back when I started in 2016. I've noticed recently that many of the profiles aren't active and haven't been for years.

How to fix this:
☕ Add 3–5 relevant new connections daily
☕ Leave thoughtful comments (10 posts/week) on 2nd connections' posts. 
☕ Reply to your DMs

Number 2: Commenting is your highest-ROI networking

If you only have like 15 minutes to do something on LinkedIn, DON'T just always post! Try commenting instead! Set a timer, and focus on 4-5 thoughtful takes, not just congrats! or an emoji. Talk like you would in person! 

These work because they show how you think, in front of someone else’s audience.

And here’s the wild part:

A strong comment can travel farther than your own posts.
I’ve seen my own comments outperform original content in reach, profile views, and inbound DMs.

Number 3: Newsletters > Going Viral

Ok, listen, I know the word "newsletter" makes people shudder. But if you're posting on LinkedIn, PLEASE take the extra 5 mins and copy and paste it into a newsletter!! 

Viral posts are billboards, flashy but fleeting. Newsletters are a basically a subscription. 

Why do I preach about them so much? Newsletters don’t rely on the feed or the temperamental algorithm. They land right in someone’s inbox, where open + click means way more than a like.

If you want staying power here, start a newsletter yesterday.

I have a bunch more ideas, so I might do a part two, but for now, I want to say this. 

LinkedIn is moving to a pay-to-play model. I don't know if you see it on your profile yet, but boosted posts are being beta tested on mine. 

This means that we need to be far more strategic about how we show up, or pay the price. 

I will ALWAYS be for the underdog, so I'll be sharing more stuff like this to make sure that your voice is still heard on here 🫶

Everyone on LinkedIn loves the glow-up story posts. No one talks about the part where you have to go back to level one even though you thought you’d already beaten the game.

Nobody warns you about the kind of season that humbles you.

A few weeks ago, I opened my laptop, refreshed my inbox…and there was nothing except an unpaid invoice. 

No new clients. No opportunities. Just a Starbucks promo and Old Navy trying to sell me pjs I definitely don’t need (actually, wait, they are kinda cute...). 

And meanwhile…there’s a baby inside me kicking like, “kick tock kick tock” as if to say,
 
“Hey Mom, just checking in, I’m arriving in just weeks from now! Hope you’ve got your life sorted!”

I don’t. My contracts have been halted. 

And with the wave of massive layoffs, so many people I know, smart, seasoned, deeply talented, are suddenly on the sidelines too.

It feels like the whole world is in transition.

Which is strange, because we only ever hear the viral glow-up story, even now when there are record numbers of layoffs happening. 

The shiny LinkedIn version:
 
“I got laid off Monday and by Friday I was leading a team of 100!!” or “I doubled my income overnight!”

But no one tells you about the middle. 

The part where you debate with yourself about whether the "open to work" banner is strategic or desperate. 

Slow seasons feel an awful lot like guilt or shame. 

It’s humbling in a way you didn't ask for. You can't outrun it or push fast forward to the part where you feel on top again. 

But here's the thing I know: 

The courage isn’t in the glow-up. The courage is in the comeback.

The comeback isn’t flashy. It’s not a montage. No Beyoncé lighting (unfortunately). No sudden epiphany that makes everything make sense.

It’s small. Quiet. Awkward.

It looks like sending one message on LinkedIn, trying something new even if it flops, letting yourself grieve what you thought this season would look like, asking for and accepting help.

It’s not linear. It’s certainly not sexy. 

Maybe the problem is that we’ve been trained to think life is about constant upward momentum.

Always climbing. Always levelling up. Life should be a Pinterest quote and if it's not then dammit, you're doing it all wrong! 

But what if the REAL story, the human one, is about learning how to rebuild when life hands you a plot twist you didn’t ask for?

I’m not in my glow-up era. I’m in my quiet comeback era.

It doesn’t feel triumphant. It feels tender, and weirdly… honest? I see myself again in my writing. I kind of missed her. 

Because maybe the point isn’t to return to who we were before life said "plot twist!". 

Maybe the point is to become someone softer, deeper, clearer, braver...someone who knows how to begin again. 

And doesn't that feel more admirable than yet another post about getting that big promotion?

I was at the grocery store with Isla, my three year old, in the snack aisle. 

There was an employee restocking boxes of applesauce pouches, and honestly? He looked…done. Like full scowl, mumbling under his breath, sighing loudly. 

Now unfortunately for me, Isla is too young still to recognize body language or social cues, so watches him for a second as I’m grabbing a box and says 

“Wow, you’re a really good helper!”

He froze, and looks down at her like he’s going to unleash whatever pent up frustration he has. 

Then he laughs…one of those surprised, straight from the belly laughs and goes

“Thank you, I needed that today.” And smiled at her. 

And then he starts restocking with this whole new energy, humming a Christmas song.  

Here’s the thing…

She wasn’t trying to fix his day. She wasn’t thinking about kindness or mental health or whatever. 

She’s never read a book on how to win friends and influence people 😆

She just noticed someone doing invisible work…and said so.

Most of what keeps the world running is invisible like that.

Quiet, repetitive, thankless.

The kind of work nobody claps for (gosh I feel this one hard as a working mom). 

But one tiny comment from a kid in sparkly boots turned this guy’s whole mood around.

And it made me think…

We don’t have to be the loudest person in the room to make an impact.

Sometimes you just have to notice someone who’s blending into the background…
and tell them they’re doing a good job.

It takes four seconds.

And it sticks for the rest of the day.

I’m gonna be honest: if I hear “keep showing up” or “be consistent” as advice on LinkedIn one more time, I might actually scream.

Because here’s the thing nobody admits...sometimes “showing up” gets you nowhere. The real wisdom is knowing when to hit pause too. 

Sometimes that looks like crying in your car, or taking a nap at 2PM because you're just emotionally and physically SPENT.

Right? 

Five years ago, a doctor gave me a 5% chance of ever having a baby. 

Did I follow the typical motivational advice back then? “Just keep showing up!”

No. I didn’t show up. I went through the motions of the typical path of fertility treatments and when my gut said, screeeeech...I stopped and listened. 

I called my doctor and told her I wanted to explore surgery with an endometriosis specialist before moving forward. 

I researched. I listened to my body. I found an angel of a therapist. I advocated for myself even when it felt uncomfortable.

And yeah, I “paused” the entire IVF plan everyone told me to keep following. 

That pause ended up saving me and maybe even my life. 

Surgery revealed severe endometriosis, my appendix basically ready to burst, and a whole lot of things that no amount of “consistency” or "showing up" was ever going to fix. 

So have I spent years going through super painful treatments? Yes. I technically "kept showing up", but my progress didn’t come from grinding.

It came from stopping, reassessing, and choosing the path that actually made sense for me when the world was saying "tick tock, better make this happen before you run out of time!".

Fast forward to now, I’m pregnant with a little boy due soon that I never thought I’d meet, our second miracle baby that they said would probably never happen. 

Not because I pushed harder. Not because I heroically “showed up.” But because I dared to hit pause, trust my gut, and take a different route entirely.

So no...I don’t buy the blanket advice anymore.

Sometimes showing up means taking a step back. 

Sometimes it means taking a break.

Sometimes it means burning the whole plan down and starting over.

I mean, dang, we are so quick to look to others to give the same copy-and-paste life advice, but sometimes, what we actually need is to listen to our gut feelings too. 

Keep going… but only when it actually makes sense for you 🫶

This is the exact formula I used to go from 112 to 119 followers in just 36 months.

Read carefully. Most people aren’t ready for this level of truth! 

Step 1:
Wake up at 4:07am. Not 4:06. Not 4:08.
You think billionaires are still sleeping? Grow up.

Step 2:
Cold plunge, journal, chant. If your kid demands attention, teach them boundaries:

“Not now, sweetheart, mommy is trying to manifest strangers on the internet into liking her post.”

Step 3:
Log onto LinkedIn and confess something awkwardly personal, liiiiike...“I cried in the Costco parking lot again.” Connect it to B2B sales. Don't ask me why, just do it. 

Step 4:
Rewrite your headline to sound important. Something like... “Empowering humans to activate their human potential.”

No one will know what you do and that’s the whole point! Mystery = money. Trust me. 

Step 5:
Message 100 random people. If they don’t respond within 2 minutes, send a follow-up that starts with "Maybe you missed my previous message." 

If they still don’t reply, keep going until you earn that block. Persistence pays. 

Step 6:
Pretend you’re a growth expert because one LinkedIn post popped off when you mentioned US politics. 

Ignore the 600 angry comments arguing with each other, it STILL counts! 

Step 7:
When none of this works, assume it’s because you didn’t try hard enough.
Wake up tomorrow at 4:06am, it's a new era.

Congrats! You’re basically a LinkedIn influencer now. Don’t let it all go to your head 🤪

If you've been on LinkedIn for a few years, you probably need to delete some connections.

Ok, weird, I know. I usually teach people how to grow their community, not shrink it, but this is something I haven't heard a single person talk about yet. 

Here's (in a very general nutshell), how the LinkedIn algorithm works...

When you post content on LinkedIn, they don't just send it to all your connections, I don't know if you knew that! 

Instead, they test it with a very small segment to see if it's relevant before sending it out to more and more people. 

This is why engagement pods 🤮 have become a big issue that LinkedIn is trying to tackle. 

But engagement pods truly are a bandaid because they only work as long as your pod is active. It's a hack, not a strategy. I'm all about actual long term strategy! 

So what does deleting connections have to do with all this? 

I started posting on LinkedIn back in 2016, when an article I wrote went viral. My number of connections exploded overnight. 

Great, right? NO, it's actually NOT great 🤣 , and here's why. 

The first few years that you gain traction and your connections are fresh are great because they engage with your content if they're part of that small segment. 

But, as time goes on, you know what happens? People fall off. They stop using LinkedIn. Their interests change. They retire. 

Just like an email list can go stale, your connections can too! 

So, what I've been doing is manually going through my connections. 

I check two things...

First, when I connected with them. If it's back in 2016 and we've never chatted, that's a clue that we aren't really "connected". 

Second, I check their activity section. If they haven't ever posted, commented...had any sort of activity on LinkedIn, they are removed. It usually look for activity at least within the past year. 

If you aren't sure if they're active, you could also send a message and see if you get a response. 

Because here's the thing. If they aren’t active, your content might be getting judged by people who will never see it.

And that absolutely pulls your reach down.
