I am 80 years old.

And if I’m being honest, I probably shouldn’t be. 

I was a stupid kid once, angry at the world, furious at myself, convinced I knew everything while proving every day that I didn’t know a damn thing.

The Marine Corps saved me.

Not in some poetic, Hollywood way.
It saved me by breaking me.
By stripping away every excuse I had ever used to avoid becoming the man I needed to be.

I enlisted in ’65 because I was running out of places to run.
I had a temper. A chip on my shoulder. A tendency to solve problems with fists and bad decisions.

The Corps didn’t negotiate with that boy.
It killed him.

Parris Island wasn’t a rite of passage, it was a crucible.

I learned how to shut up.
How to listen.
How to stand when standing cost everything I had.

They taught me that pain ends, but quitting stays with you.

That discipline was just love in a harder language.

Vietnam came, and I learned what loyalty really meant.

Not flags. Not speeches. Not slogans.

Men.

You live for the Marine to your left.
You die for the Marine to your right.
And the world will never understand that kind of love.

Some of us came home.
Some didn’t.
I carry them still. Every day.

But here’s what matters:

I didn’t stay that angry kid.

When I got home, I had tools inside me I never had before.

I could endure.
I could commit.
I could choose better.

So I did.

I met a woman who was far too good for me.
I married her.
I learned to soften without weakening.
I learned to listen more than I spoke.

We had kids.
They had kids.
Now I sit at birthday parties watching grandchildren run around and I realize something:

Every single good thing in my life traces back to the day I earned the title Marine.

Not because the Corps made me invincible.
But because it taught me to be responsible.

To show up.
To mean what I say.
To put others before myself.
To get up every time I fall.
To love my family with the same loyalty I once learned in the jungle.

I built a career.
I built a home.
I built a life.

Not perfect, but worthy.

So now, at 80, on the Marine Corps Birthday, I sit with my coffee before the sun breaks and I whisper a quiet thank you.

Not to glory.
Not to war.
Not to uniforms or medals.

But to the Corps that took a reckless kid
and turned him into a husband, a father, a grandfather, a man.

That is the legacy.

Not the battles.
But the life that came after.

So here’s what I know to be true:

The Marine Corps doesn’t stay in your past.
It lives in your blood.

I may move slow.
My salute might take longer.
My voice might crack when the hymn starts.

But I stand.
Every year.
Every time.

Because I am a Marine.

Still.
Always.

And Marines don’t stop.

Not at 20.
Not at 40.
Not at 80.

Not ever.

Let’s get something straight:

Not everyone who held a cup of coffee is a coffee drinker.
And I’m DONE pretending otherwise.

Some of you talk about “needing your morning coffee” while pressing your little Keurig button like you’re deploying drones from a trailer in Nevada.

No.

REAL coffee is brewed in a canteen cup you haven’t washed since the Reagan administration.

REAL coffee tastes like burnt tires, gun oil, and self-loathing.

REAL coffee is what keeps a grown man upright at hour 43 of guard duty while the generator screams like Satan’s leaf blower.

If your mug has inspirational quotes on it?
If your brew has notes of caramel or seasonal cheer?
If your coffee maker asks you to “descale it”?

You weren’t drinking coffee.
You were drinking adult hot chocolate with delusions of grandeur.

I need you to hear this:

You don’t get to say you “love coffee” if you’ve never used it to avoid emotionally collapsing in a shipping container at 3:17 AM while a guy named Ramirez talks about reenlisting again.

If your coffee came from:

A drive-thru
An app order
Or a barista who spells your name with a heart over the i

Congratulations.... you are rear with the gear in this conversation.

Stay in your lane.
Sip your caramel fluffed sugar joy cup in peace.

But do not, and I mean DO NOT, stand next to me and say:

“We’re both coffee people :)”

You and I are NOT THE SAME.

I put boiling water directly into metal that was never intended to hold beverages and called it breakfast.

I brewed grounds in a sock because we were out of filters and out of hope.

I drank something once that I’m pretty sure was just melted MRE heater fluid and called it “light roast.”

You?

You’re out here acting heroic because you ordered an oat milk latte with confidence.

Respectfully, stand down.

We have tiers in the caffeine community.
Levels.
Battlefields.

And some of you never left Green Beans, and it shows. 

I SAID WHAT I SAID.

You ever look in the mirror and realize you’re the last line of defense between America and total collapse?

I do. Every morning. Usually while brushing my teeth with a tactical toothbrush I bought off a Facebook ad that promised “Civil War Readiness In 90 Days.”

People say I’m paranoid. 

Wrong. I’m prepared.

And by prepared, I mean I have consumed so many memes, rage-bait clips, and poorly edited YouTube videos with dramatic music that my entire belief system is basically a compilation playlist titled Things That Sound True Because Someone Said Them Loud Enough.

I don’t need to think for myself. That’s for academics and other weaklings.

Every morning I log in to see what I’m supposed to believe that day.

Is the economy collapsing?
Are the bees organizing?

Did a celebrity secretly endorse martial law?
Whatever the headline says is what my soul immediately absorbs and tattoo-guns into my worldview.

People say, “But have you thought about it?”

Brother, if I start thinking for myself, I might accidentally change my mind.
Then who am I?
What am I?
A man?
A sheep?
A critical thinker?
Absolutely not. 

Instead, I’ve joined nine Facebook groups all dedicated to preparing for the “inevitable.”
What’s inevitable? Doesn’t matter.
The groups will tell me when it’s time.

I’ve stockpiled supplies too, because when the Civil War breaks out, I’ll be ready.

My pantry looks like a doomsday subscription box threw up.
Cans.
Five-gallon water jugs.
And a laminated checklist called “When The Balloon Goes Up.”
I don’t know what balloon they’re talking about, but everybody in the group says it with such confidence that I nod automatically.

I’ve also got a survival vest I can barely lift above my waist.

Not because it’s heavy.

Because I haven’t worked out since Afghanistan, but that doesn’t matter.

When the fighting starts, adrenaline will surgically reattach the tendons I snapped lacing my boots.

People ask me which side I’m on.
Let me be clear: whichever one forms a militia the fastest.

Patriotism isn’t about ideology.
It’s about velocity.

If your side prints T-shirts, makes a logo, and hands out patches?

Brother, I’m enlisted.

I’ll be your foot soldier before the ink dries.
I don’t even need to understand the cause.

I just need someone to yell it at me in a video with subtitles and a bald eagle screeching in the background.

And when it happens, when the first shot is fired, I’ll be standing there in my driveway wearing a plate carrier I bought during a Memorial Day sale, screaming,

“This is what we were warned about,”
even though I have absolutely no idea what “this” is.

America needs thinkers.
But most importantly, it needs people like me
who proudly shout the opinions of others with absolute confidence and zero comprehension.

That’s what makes this nation strong.
And that’s why, when the civil war kicks off, I’ll be the first one there, saluting whatever flag my preferred Facebook group uploads that morning.
