The 11th minute of

the 11th month ...

At its striking the guns would finally fall silent over Europe ...bringing to an end the worse self-inflicted loss of life hence to fore known to a continent not exactly known for its peaceful nature. Of course, the consequences of the treaty signed in rail car outside a palace in France were not, and would not be, fully known. It would take decades and millions of lives lost to fully face what we had wrought on ourselves started so long ago on that hot August day.

Now of course we know Armistice Day as Veterans Day here in the United States. Every soldier carries a piece of the conflicts they have seen with us always ...we see humanity at its worst & most destructive and at the exact same moments we humanity at its very best. We carry the blackness of that worse in our very souls hoping that by doing so we allow that best to shine through even brighter. 

To the brothers & sister I found in the fight, Damn Few. To the brothers & sisters I lost in the fight ...Too. Damn. Many.

For all of you that have family, friends and colleagues that live in Minnesota ...be prepared, especially if you yourself do not. We are forecasted to get snow tonight and while it probably will not stick around, that will not matter.

The sense of superiority that Minnesotans are going to start to display for enduring our winters is probably going to be unbearable ...but please please remember this is one of Minnesota's defining "things". So don't take that away from us.

This is a great article and a perspective that is badly needed if only to remind us of the simple fact that measurement by definition is the past. It is not now, nor will it ever be a prediction of the future.

Something to consider as well what exactly is all our measurement actually measuring ...have we ever really taken the time to ask that question? I have been in the meetings, as I sure a lot of you have as well, where we talk about people clicking on different things on our websites like deep engagement. Is THAT really deep engagement, maybe but then again maybe not. We assume that data is an objective truth, but what if that entire framing is wrong? What if we seek out the data that we want to see and ignore the data that does not support what we already believe to be true about our marketing?

To Understand First We Have To Understand

I did not study marketing or advertising in college ...I actually got my degree in political science (thinking when I started I was going on to law school).

Because, of that I have found myself buying media, marketing, communications, and advertising textbooks to read & study from. This habit also forms the majority basis of my opinions around too little understanding of the basics. I'll put like this ...when I was in the Army I did a training rotation at Fort Irwin, or the National Training Center, in California. As I was leaving an unit of US Army Special Forces (Green Beret's) were rotating in and I got to spend some time with them. On my last day their commander stopped us and asked, "What makes us 'Special'?" None of us had an answer until he finally said ..."what makes us special is we are the only unit in the Army that has figured out you can never be too good at the basics."

So because I came to marketing after that I realize that I can never be too good at the basics of marketing.
