SeaNet Maritime Communications AB

Seanet is a start-up Mobile Service Provider that provides mobile and Internet SaaS services to passengers and crew on board of vessels at sea. Mobile backhaul transmission is done via satellite.

As responsible for sales and marketing, my tasks included direct sales, establishment of new indirect sales channels, recruitment of new international sales staff as well as execute consumer marketing (B2C) to increase usage of SeaNet’s services. I was part of the company’s management team. During my employment, the installed customer base increased from 12 to 60 vessels.

10 learnings about entering the Swedish market

Here are my top 10 learnings. I got them from meeting and sharing with several experts. We all participated in the seminar Entering the Swedish Market. An insightful event arranged by the Swedish-Polish Chamber of Commerce.

1. The Swedish market attractive
Alot of high tech, hot innovation climate and smart ways to the stockmarket.

2. Be aware about the differences
Most companies who are eager to expand are successful in their home market. They try to do the same thing when they come to Sweden. They miss to pay attention to the differences.

3. Work with partners
Looking at the ones that are successful, they leverage partners. It could be able manage the currency risks, forums for meeting customers or find places to live.

4. Set realistic goals
Exporting to Sweden is not a "low-hanging fruit". Think more about is as the gold crown on the top of the tree.

5. Be smart
Vacation period may not be the same in Sweden as other countries. Be aware that Sweden close down in July.

6. Build trust
It takes time to build trust. And trust is often required to build business with Swedish business partners.

7. Focus your effort
Demand for products and services in mature markets, like Sweden, is very specific. What companies are looking for are experts.

8. Listen carefully
Swedish companies value collaboration. They expect you to give precise answers to their questions.

9. Don't copy
Learn from others success. Steal ideas, but don't copy. What worked for other many not work for you.

10. It can be easy
Once you find the right entry key - there is a great potential.

Let us look on the success rate in these parts:

Hardware = 99,999%

Software = 99,999%

Go-To-Market = 1,7%

Conclusion 98 of 100 Saas companies fail to deliver their GTM.

How to fix this?

A good start is to meet and learn from others.

How to win business without being the best

Competition is fierce. 

Your customers have many options and alternatives.

Many Tech companies are fighting to be the best. They are spending all their effort to build the best product.

To have a fantastic product is great, but it does not always help you to win.

To win the business, you don't need to bring the best product.

You need to bring the solution that has a better fit than your competitors.
 
A better fit could also include that your customer wants more than your product provides.

So, spend less time to develop the best product.

Spend more effort to find your best product/market fit.

Select your target segment where your product will add value.

Put your effort into reach this market segment.

Stop building the best product, put effort into finding your best customer instead.

That will help you to win.

Do less, win more

"Why don't I get any results?", my coaching client asked.

My client had done her homework. She had completed the actions we agreed.

So, what was the problem?

She was also very ambitions. High energy and many ideas.

Together we reviewed the situation by looking at another dimension.

I asked: "How many things are you involved in?"

"..and how many markets are you trying to enter at the same time?"

It turned out that she was spreading her efforts very "thin". 

Trying to be everywhere as the same time. 
Trying to win many new markets.

I asked why she was trying with so many new markets in parallel.

I don't know where my best market is, so I am trying everywhere.

This is a bad loop.

Many underestimate the sales and market intensity required to win new customers. 

She understood and said: "but I don't resource to do this kind of sales and marketing everywhere".

"Exactly, so you must be selective. Move your effort to markets where you believe you have your best success chances".

So, she did, and her win rate increased.

Do less thing, instead focus on a few and do them better. Be more selective and focus on one market at a time. Win more!

How to develop your tech sales

Everybody wants development, but few wants are ready to develop themselves.

My coaching clients wants to level-up their sales. Many says that the important level is a 9, on a 10-grades scale. I.e. very important.

They ask if I can provide them with a method or tool, that without effort, will help them to reach a new level.

Nope.

Tools and methods are great. I have many, and I have shown many to my clients. Some use them. But it is not enough to transform their sales.

Level-up your sales could mean exponential growth or launching a new product. It could also mean entering a new market or raising profitability.

Regardless of your reason, if you want to reach a new result, you likely must do something different. This change must start with yourself.

To level-up, you must be ready to develop yourself. That may include to leave you comfort zone. This can hurt and it can feel unpleasant.
