3 Simple Copywriting Tips to Help you Become a Better Writer in 5 Minutes Flat:


1) Lead with the benefit

All your reader cares about is “What’s in it for me?”

They don't care that your car has 8 cylinders, a sunroof and a Burmester high-end surround sound system. (unless they’re in the know)

They care about the beautiful, scenic drive...

Cruising along California coast-hugging Highway 1.

The wind blowing through their hair as they blast Lynyrd Skynyrd’s ‘Freebird’.

And the envy in the eyes of their friends when they pull up in the driveway.

2) Avoid passive voice (like the plague)

The best way to show this is with some examples.

Let’s look at two sentences:

1) The cat chased the mouse
2) The mouse was chased by the cat

Which sentence do you prefer?

I hope you said #1.

I wrote #1 in active voice. 
I wrote #2 in passive voice.

Active voice is more clear and direct—to the point.

Passive voice is harder to read, displeasing to the ear, and more unclear.

Here are 2 simple tips to know if you’re using passive voice in your sentences:

Simple: If you can and “by the cat” after your verb, you’re using passive voice

Even Simpler: Go to Hemingway Editor online (Google it). 

Copy/paste your writing there and it will tell you if any of your sentences are in passive voice.

3) Write your hook last

The hook is the most important part of any piece of writing.

Why’s that?

Because if your hook doesn’t land, the reader won’t keep reading.

Meaning, you could have spent hours perfecting your “body” (text)...

But nobody reads it.

So, what I do. And what you might consider doing too is this:

1) Write a rough draft hook to begin with

2) This gives you an idea of the direction you’re heading in—what the piece is about

3) After you've finished your body—go back and perfect the hook

A good hook does the following:

• Peaks curiosity
• Teases what the reader will get by reading further
• Speaks directly to the audience you’re trying to reach

9 Essential Tips to Avoid Remote Work Burnout

(A survival guide)


1) Define Your Work Hours

Set clear start and end times.

Align them for peak productivity.

For example: Are you most productive in the morning? (me too)

If so, use that time for work that requires the most mental bandwidth.


2) Establish a Dedicated Workspace

Choose a separate workspace to maintain focus. 

This physical separation signals to your brain when it's time to focus... 

And when it's time to relax.

Do NOT work from your bed or couch... 

Trust me—it's a trap.


3) Set Boundaries

People can make the mistake of thinking because you're home that you're free.

Make sure your team, family and friends know your working hours.

Don't answer non-work related calls or messages while you work.

Schedule a specific time to respond to business emails/messages.


4) Block Out Time for Breaks

Schedule regular breaks to recharge.

I can't stress enough how important this one is.

I've pulled days where I've written for 6-8 hours straight—it doesn't work.

The end of the day comes and you're ready to fight someone. (I'm kidding)

Instead, get up and stretch every half hour or so. 

Go on 15 minute walk breaks every 90 minutes.

This makes a world of difference. 


5) Eliminate distractions

Nothing will make you more unproductive than interruptions.

Loud music. People talking. Notifications on your phone &/or computer.

Get rid of all these. Use noise cancelling headphones.

Keep your environment quiet for peak concentration.


6) Disconnect at the End of the Day

Have a shutdown ritual to signal the end of your work day.

Do some more relaxing activities to transition to personal time.

When the work day is over—set a hard stop.

Don't just continue to work.


7) Take Time Off Regularly

Every so often you need to take a day to unwind.

I've made the mistake of working for days on end with no time off.

You can do it for a while, but eventually it catches up you.

Take time off.

You'll come back refreshed. 
You'll produce better work.
You'll have more mental clarity.
You'll have better mental health.


8) Pursue Personal Interests

Make time for hobbies and interests outside of work.

I'm the worst at this because writing and marketing are basically my life now.

But I still make the time do other things I enjoy. 

Whether you enjoy hiking, hockey or Himalayan hula-hooping...

Set aside time to do the things you love.


9) Cultivate Connections

Many people used to rely on their job for a certain level of socialization.

Remote work has made a huge change to our lifestyles for this reason.

Keep in touch with friends, family, and colleagues to avoid isolation.

And my personal recommendation: Join online communities and mentorship programs within your field. 

They're an amazing way to network and make like-minded friends who are also remote workers.

Develop a writing style that’s unique to you.

5 typographic techniques you can use to spice up your writing:


1) Bullet points

They help you capture attention and be more concise. 

If I had a dollar for every bullet point I've used, I'd be a billionaire by now.

Here's an example of how to use them…

5 superfoods to boost your energy:

• Eggs
• Steak
• Avocado
• Blueberries

How satisfying is that?

2) —Dashes—

You can use dashes for lists like the bullet points above.

But I like to use them in sentences.

I particularly like long dashes.

I'll show you some examples of how I use them:

• "We booked a call the next day—April 22nd."
• "It misses the mark—especially for newbies."
• "A lot of people visit these cities—Medellin more than Bogota."

They break up your text and let you write in a way that's more like how you speak.

3) White space

Ah yes... Good ol' white space.

Where would we be without it?

It forces your reader to keep scrolling.

In order to continue reading your words.

It's also easier to read than big blocks of text like this:

"I’m sitting at a cafe in Medellin, Colombia right now (as I write this). There is a park across the street from me and it’s quite beautiful. It’s a new cafe for me. Haven’t visited this one before. It’s a bit quieter than some of the others I’ve tried in the area. Less barking dogs and screaming children which is always nice. I think you can begin to see why big blocks of text don’t work. Even if you found what I’m saying here to be interesting, you’d still find it hard to keep reading because it’s not as easy on the eyes. Not as easy to digest."

The real art is balancing your use of white space and blocks of text.

When you vary your writing it’s more interesting for the reader.

4) Bolding

𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝘁 𝗕𝗢𝗟𝗗 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁?

Bolding basically brings attention to words.

It's great for hooks. An example: "𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗧𝗼 𝗪𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗞𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗿 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗚𝗲𝘁 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗱:"

But you can 𝗔𝗟𝗦𝗢 use 𝗯𝗼𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 in sentences to bring 𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 to certain words.

Now, you might be asking "But Mike... How can I bolden MY content?!"

Much like bolding, but I typically use this tool in a different way.

I like to use it for quotes—to bring attention to what someone said.

An example: 

"𝑾𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒂𝒓𝒆 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒅𝒐𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒆, 𝒎𝒂𝒏?" Gavin said.

Last night I was enjoying a steak dinner with a buddy here in Medellin, Colombia.

Is the fact that, someone who builds a personal brand on this platform...

Could actually have more leverage than a person with a Master's degree in a certain field.

I said to my buddy "Imagine a guy like Kieran Drew looking for a job now... Do you think he'd have any trouble landing just about any copywriting gig/marketing job etc.?"

He could have his pick.

I mean, it's not like he'd pull out his phone and show them his Twitter and LinkedIn following... (Maybe he would)...

But his reputation would (in many cases) precede him.

Not to mention the opportunities that'd be available to him within his network. 

And I mean, I've seen this myself—on a smaller scale.

I see people around me struggling to get a job in the corporate world right now.

Meanwhile for myself (thank the lord above) I'm not struggling to find clients or work...

In fact, it's more just a question of "how much more can I really take on before I'm at capacity and need to bring on more people to help?"

So, long story short, if you have any hesitation in building a personal brand...

And you have that fire and desire in you, I highly recommend you pull the trigger.

Ready, FIRE, aim...

Fortune favours the bold.

Get used to taking action when you don't feel ready.

Go for a 15-45 minute walk to start your day.

I did this today and I feel great.

4) Eat a healthy diet

If you want your brain (and body) to function (properly)...

You need to give them the right fuel.

This looks different for everyone.

Here’s what I do:

• Eat a protein rich diet
• Limit grains (bread, rice, pasta)
• Consume 1-2 pieces of fruit per day
• Enjoy healthy salts & butter/animal fats

Find a diet that works for you. Stick with it.

5) Walk often 

The great Dan Koe himself preaches about walking all the time.

And there's a good reason for this.

Walking and taking breaks:

• Reduces stress
• Improves focus
• Enhances creativity

These walking breaks are essential for productivity.

Work for 90 minutes. Walk for 15.

You'll come back refreshed. Ready to write.

These are accounts I've stumbled on since being on LinkedIn.

Some you may know.

Some you may be unfamiliar with.

But one thing for sure, they all share a TON of value.

So, let's get into it. Shall we?

1) Maria Petrescu

I first met this little spelling and grammar nazi in my comments section.

I believe she was fighting for the rights of adverbs at the time.

One thing about Maria—she's a lover of words.

Long words. Short words. 

Simple words. Complex words.

They all hold a place in her heart.

A very smart woman too. 

I've had the pleasure of chatting with her in the DMs.

She's a multilingual Digital Strategist from Gothenburg, Sweden.

And from what I know about her, she can help you with most of your marketing needs.

2) Nickolas Carlos Grothe

This guy is the homie.

I've watched his journey from the start.

Not everyone knows it, but he started out on Twitter.

But good ol' X became a challenging place to grow.

So, he bounced over to LinkedIn and shot himself to the moon—he grew like crazy.

It was something to witness.

Since starting here, I've seen his writing improve exponentially.

Extremely bright kid with a super successful future in front of him—in my humble opinion.

He also shares some of the most valuable writing advice on this platform.

His mentoring from Dakota Robertson & Taylin John Simmonds shows.

3) Anselmo Vargas

Another homie.

He's here with me now in Medellin, Colombia.

He just started out on LinkedIn...

But he's sharing some super valuable sales advice.

This guy has about 7 years of sales experience under his belt.

And is currently on the hunt for a remote closer position.

So, if you're in need of a top closer—give him a shout.

4) Danny Carranza

I know Danny from Dakota Robertson's Growth Ghosts ghostwriting cohort.

Good kid. He's sharing heaps of valuable writing advice. And I can tell he's hungry.

Great attitude—he shares a solid balance of his own life story and value on the timeline.

Highly recommend checking him out.

5) Darion Rae

Last but most definitely not least, we've got Darion Rae.

He's definitely not a small account, but he probably is underrated.

I had the pleasure of meeting this guy in Medellin, Colombia when he was here with two buddies who I know from Twitter.

Darion shares top-notch writing tips and advice...

But also carousels that'll help you in other areas of life—like staying cool, calm and collected and making smart business decisions.

Find your authentic writing voice

I was chatting with a buddy the other night. 

For context, he's a copywriter. 

Something came up in conversation.

We spoke about the voice-to-text feature in Google Docs.

Not everyone knows about this.

The 3-step process goes like this:

3) Edit the transcript

Voila. Your writing voice on auto-pilot.

I’d have over 100,000 LinkedIn followers...

If I'd listened to this marketing guru’s advice:


I watched a video on YouTube last week.

A famous leader walks out in front of the crowd.

5000 focused faces stare up at him in the packed hall.

“LinkedIn 2020 is like Facebook 2012” he says with confidence.

"You needed to start posting here yesterday."

Who is he? You ask.

... Gary Vaynerchuk. AKA Gary Vee.

And I saw this same video 4 years ago too.

But guess what? 

I didn’t listen to him… Why?

Well, I figured LinkedIn wasn’t for me.

Again, I’ve said it before:

I thought it was a “stuffy, corporate platform.”

A place to dump your resume.

I didn't understand the appeal.

But I should have known better.

Because here’s the thing:

Gary Vaynerchuk is always right.

He was right about Uber.
He was right about Google.
He was right about YouTube.
He was right about Instagram.

And he was right about LinkedIn as well.
This guy’s track record is incredible.

LinkedIn isn’t just for corporate 9-5ers now.

It’s a place for:

• Creators
• Entrepreneurs
• Intrapreneurs
• Side hustlers

And everyone between.

You can do whatever you’d like here (within reason)

Talk about whatever subject you please (aside from a few)

Promote yourself in any way you like (Woah… not like that)

Connect with whoever you fancy (But don’t be a creep)

And Gary knew it would become the platform it is today.

The free market always moves to where they get:

• The cheapest attention
• The most bang for their buck
• The highest ROI on their time

So, it was inevitable creators would come to LinkedIn.

And imagine if I HAD gotten on LinkedIn in 2020.

Imagine if YOU'd gotten on LinkedIn in 2020.

We would've been so early to the party.

We would've been the only people posting.

Now, my point here isn’t to make you feel bad.

Or make you feel like you’re late.

In fact, it's quite the opposite.

You see, Gary had another point in his presentation.

A timeless warning... It still applies today.

Here's what he said (I'll paraphrase):

"I don't know when the supply and demand of attention and content will change... 

But it happens to ALL these platforms.

The organic reach and consumption will go away... It always does."

Knowing this...

Understanding that the glory days won't last forever.

You might ask yourself...

"How many more years do we have?"

Will the same opportunity exist one year from now?

Only time will tell.

Everything always changes.

The shift is happening as we speak.

Soon the average creator will realize it's easy to grow on LinkedIn.
 
That's when the platform will get more saturated.
It'll be much harder to grow. 
Less people will see your posts.

So, time is of the essence.
But you're not late...
You're right on time.

I'd have 100k+ followers... If I'd listened to this advice

Comments are the #1 growth hack on LinkedIn.

But 99% of people can’t write a good one to save their life.

Here's the ‘Billboard Comments’ method I use to gain 100s of followers per week:

I have a way of seeing comments that's pretty unique... 

I'll share it with you:

Basically, you can think of comments as if they're billboards for your personal brand.

You have an opportunity to leave these “billboards” around “town” (LinkedIn).

And they work for you while you sleep.

Bringing attention to your page like advertisements.

But you don't need to be salesy. This isn’t about dropping your website in people’s comment section like a dork.

You just want to be… present. Show up.

Now, there are high-traffic locations (big accounts) whose comments sections get a lot of attention, but it's harder to stand out there.

Then there are medium sized accounts:

Their comments sections may get a little less traffic, but it’s slightly easier for you to stand out.

Lastly, we have smaller accounts:

They get a lot less traffic in their comments sections, but it’s the easiest for you to stand out there. They’re also more likely to engage back, and they might even follow you.

The key is to spread your commenting across BIG, medium and small accounts in your niche.

This way you maximize the amount of attention/impressions you get for your efforts.

So, now you know WHERE you should be commenting.

But let’s talk about WHAT TYPE of comments you should leave.

First off, it needs to be said…

AI generated comments are the absolute worst thing you can do for your brand.

I shouldn’t even have to tell you this.

But these goons are more prevalent than ever.

And I’ll tell you one thing—you aren’t fooling anyone with these comments.

Anyone with 5 or more brain cells can spot a ChatGPT generated comment from 3 miles away.

Okay perfect, now that we’ve got that out of the way...

Let’s get back to the good stuff.

BONUS: The GVH method by Mike Bolton

Your comments should be one (OR ALL) of these 3 things:

• Genuine
• Valuable 
• Humorous 

If you can think of another category, do let me know.

Hey if this is the new outreach strategy

And if all you're looking for is a response...

All I can say is... It works.

This is Twitter cold DMing in a nutshell:

The most important question you can ask a ghostwriting client.

(Also applies to podcasts and interviews)

I had a recent epiphany.

I realized there is one question that is more important than any other question when it comes to ghostwriting interview calls.

Say you're speaking with a client...

And they tell you about one of their:

• Ideas
• Routines
• Strategies
• Approaches

To a thing in their:

• Business
• Industry
• Field
• Life

While the idea, routine, practice, strategy, philosophy itself may be BRILLIANT...

It's not enough.

Or I should say, it's not enough to create a super-compelling piece of content.

But one thing will take a great idea and give it life.

And to find that thing, it's very important you ask them this:

"How did you first discover this [idea/strategy]?"

Or to be more particular...

"Can you tell me the story behind this [idea/strategy]? How did you arrive on it?"

Why are these questions so crucial?

The reason why they're so important is that the STORY behind the lesson/idea/strategy matters just as much (if not more) than the lesson itself...

Why?

Because we've used stories to teach lessons and share ideas for centuries.

At this point, it's in our DNA.

A story will make any idea more memorable and give it WEIGHT.

The incident that actualized their idea.

The failure that lead them to their finding.

The struggle that inspired their strategy.

The story humanizes the concept.

It brings it to life.

Makes it more memorable.

And so...

To teach a lesson,
Don't give a lecture.

Tell a story.
