After decades in the trenches, I’ve seen the good, the bad, and the ugly when it comes to ERP rollouts. Epicor P21 is no exception.

Here’s what stands out to me: 

Let’s start with the good.

P21 shines when it comes to flexibility. The system can be shaped around your business, not the other way around. If you’re in wholesale distribution, it actually “gets” how your business works—inventory, pricing, workflows, all of it. The user interface? Better than most. It’s not flashy, but it works. You won’t spend six months just teaching people how to log in. 

Now, the bad.

Customizations can get out of hand—fast. Everyone wants something “just for them.” Before you know it, your system is a Frankenstein, and even basic updates become a project. The trick is to stay disciplined. Customize for real business needs, not for every single preference. 

And the ugly.

Here’s what most companies underestimate: change management. Everyone thinks their team will adopt the new system without a hitch. In reality, people drag their feet, shortcuts get invented, and suddenly the investment you made isn’t paying off. The tech is never the problem—resistance to change is.

Trying to automate broken processes with shiny new technology.

Before rolling out a new ERP, WMS, or eCommerce platform, every distribution business should pause and ask:
