As a volunteer job coach I supported young, often disengaged, adults in the West Yorkshire region. Through one-to-one coaching engagement I helped increase their skills, confidence, self-esteem and aspirations for the future.

I sat on mock interview panels, providing young people with real life practical experience of being interviewed. Working on one-to-one basis or with other panel members I provided positive and constructive feedback which helped build their confidence and self-belief. 

I participated in group sessions and workshops with young people, providing insights into working life and how to access opportunities.

Sadly, due to funding cuts, this project ended.

Isaac was a recent guest on the Bee Brilliant People Podcast 🎙🎧 (episode coming soon - do not miss it).  I've been following him for a while and was a huge fan already, so was honoured when he agreed to come on the show and talk to me about himself and share his wisdom.


I don't think I've got enough superlatives to describe this wonderful Human 🧡


Here's a very bad attempt that hopefully does him some justification.  


Isaac, despite the many challenges life throws in his way, is the epitome of a growth mindset.  He sees all situations as a learning opportunity, even those that clearly adversely affect him 🌱


Isaac is a role model leader for everyone.  He doesn't let life hold him back as views his Disabilities not as a disadvantage but fully embraces the art of the possible 🌟 


Isaac is a remarkable individual who has already achieved so much but yet remains all the while Humble, a quality so rarely seen in Leaders and Influencers these days, which make no mistake he is 💯 percent an influencer of change, and cares not about self adoration, awards and accolades 🙏

Unpopular opinion:  I'm not really down with Autism Acceptance Day, Week....🙅




Kind of makes me feel like gaslighting, like we're the weird ones who want to fit in with everyone else and feel the pity all over again.  


That's not the case for me, I'm happy with who I am, but I'm not happy that statistically speaking, Autistic folks are much more likely to be unemployed, feeling worthless and unable to contribute to the workplace and society.  That's wrong! 😠


I believe we need to move beyond gaslighting Autistic and Neurotypical folks around this to actual Autism Empowerment and real tangible changes that enables Autistic folks to belong and thrive their way ✊


Employers can and should do so much more to educate themselves on this and change things up in their business to attract and retain the unbelievable talent that Autistic folks have to offer.

Testimonial Tuesday Time 📢 and it's a good one! 


Let me tell you the story of how I got to know the incredible Leader and Coach Ad Davies and, thus, how I came to support such an awesome brand as Gymshark on their learning journey around Neurodiversity 🧠


It all started in 2022, when I was still employed and on the cusp of starting my own business. I was riddled with imposter syndrome, self-doubt and crippling RSD.  Can I do it and quit my career? what if I am a total flop? who's going to buy what I'm selling? 


I was a finalist in the Coaching Culture Ltd. Awards 2022 and up for Coaching Leader of the Year 🏆 


Ad Davies was a judge on the panel who decided I was a Winner. In a jam-packed black tie event in Nottingham, I stepped up, literally and metaphorically, to collect the award 🏆 


To say this was a life-changing moment for me is an understatement. My mentor, Jo Wright, gave me the best pep talk ever that night, saying that this showed everyone else believed in me; now I had to believe in myself. F@@k me, that was powerful, and it was a penny-drop moment for me - it was now or never! 


Anyhow, back to Ad. He came up to me after the awards and said he loved my work and mindset, had heard about what I was doing and would like to work with me 🤯 I mean, it's not every day you win Coach of the Year and get headhunted by Ad Davies to work with and support Gymshark 🦈 in the same day.


The rest, as they say, is history. I quit my 25-year career in the UK Civil Service, started up my own business and took Ad up on his offer; we've been working together ever since as Bee Brilliant People Development ♾️ supports Gymshark on their journey, and I've got to know this amazing guy more and more over time and am proud to not just work with him but to call him a friend too 🧡💪

In 2018, a pivotal moment changed the course of my life.🗺


I was diagnosed with Dyslexia, Dyscalculia, and ADHD. 🚀. This discovery set me on a path I never saw coming. 

I thought I was destined to never fit in anywhere.

Turns out that I was just trying to fit into the wrong places. 

But here's the burning question: Is seeking a diagnosis crucial?

It took me four decades to get there, so I'm no expert on timing. 

BUT

What I know, though, is that the power of self-discovery should never be underestimated. ✨

I firmly believe that self-diagnosis is a valid path. Your experiences are real, your feelings matter, and they don't need a medical stamp of approval to be legitimate. 🌈

You see, I had become a master at navigating a world that wasn't built for me. It was a daily performance, a constant act that left me utterly drained. 

My mental health paid a high price for this charade, demanding an exorbitant toll on my energy. 💥

But then, I stepped into the light as a proud Neurodivergent individual. It was a transformation. 

I grew, accepted myself, and found my voice as a self-advocate, not just for me but for others like me. 🗣️

My diagnosis doesn't define me. It's a part of who I am, but above all, I am still Mike. 🙌

Appearances can be deceiving 🎭 


I wanted to share a little bit about my struggles with Mental Health, and this isn't easy; as a Man, we are conditioned from birth to believe it is a sign of weakness to talk about our feelings and emotions 💔 


I know from first-hand experience what a lonely place it is to keep things to yourself, so it helps me to write about my experience 💚


You may know that I am Neurodivergent 🧠 I am Diagnosed with ADHD (both types - the attentive and hyperactive).  I am Dyslexic and Dyscalculic and fully identify as being on the Autistic Spectrum.


Yet, on the outside, I project a confident, happy and positive outlook.  Whilst this is mostly true, it is also a learned behaviour, a survival mechanism.


Did you know that Neurodivergent people are much more likely to suffer from poor Mental Health?  this can be due to several factors, lack of support, lack of tools and resources, lack of or poor self-awareness, no access to medication (5 year NHS waiting lists anyone), trauma, years of having to blend in 🎭 to fit in, which is completely exhausting.   This list is not exhaustive.


I was late to the party in terms of Diagnosis and receiving validation for my Neurodivergence; as a result, I suffered from all the things listed above and more.


In my 20s, I hit rock bottom because of an unhappy domestic set-up at the time, a terrible employment situation, and living far from home with no support.  I was suffering badly with my sense of identity, well-being and purpose and had nobody who understood, hell I didn't even understand myself.  I had no clue about Neurodiversity.  I ended up losing my job, being unemployed and seriously contemplating taking my own life 😔  


This was a dark period of my life.  I suffered from major anxiety, panic attacks and depression 🕳️


I am grateful I got help and support and climbed out of the black hole and back into the light with support.  I changed many things after this, but it never fully leaves you, I am more aware of the triggers, but it's not a perfect science.


My late Dad suffered from poor mental health.  He drove everyone away, including me, was an alcoholic and drank himself to death, ironically only a stone's throw from where I was living at the time.  I used my Dad's passing as a lesson to be mindful and aware of self medicating through alcohol and the importance of protecting my own Mental Health.   


I am hyper aware of the Black Dog.  When it arrives I feel disabled, crippled with anxiety, despite lots of recent positive things in my life. So, I take control, drop everything, cancel my plans and walk for hours to reflect on the positive things and tire out the Black Dog.

Getting clear on your aspirations allows you to focus on what needs to happen —taking away any confusion and letting you devise a concrete plan to reach them. 

If you aren’t where you want to be yet, keep going. 

There are still nine months left of 2024. 

Only you can decide what you are capable of!!

Boundaries. I know mine. Do you know yours? 


As a Professional Coach who works with and supports many Neurospicy 🌶️ clients at all career levels, one issue that repeatedly arises is a lack of boundaries. 

A lack of boundaries can happen for many reasons, but usually, a huge part of it is having to conform to Neuro-normative rules that cause adverse side effects and triggers. 

Personally, I've struggled to set boundaries for years, way before I was officially labelled as different, BUT thankfully, I’m getting better every day. 

As a business owner, not setting boundaries can be dangerous. 

No rules means no limits on the number of hours you can work, and it’s no secret that us Nder’s tend to push ourselves to extremes.😥 

I've learned the hard way that the end result isn’t pretty and that not listening to your mind and body has consequences. 

However, as the years have passed, I've learned to spot signs of burnout and set boundaries to stop me from getting to the point of physical and mental exhaustion. 

When I fail to set boundaries, I lose myself. 

I feel sluggish, tired, irritable, and my passion dwindles.  

I noticed this was happening recently, and after some introspection and self-coaching, I asked myself, "If I'm saying yes to something, what am I saying no to?" 

My work was becoming like the 9-5 I'd worked so hard to escape. 

I had zero time to be creative; it was all robotic and process-driven. I was suffocated. 

There was no way I was going back there in my own business, no way. 

So here's what I did. 

 I realised that if I wanted to say yes to more creative time in my week, I would have to say no to meetings, emails, admin, etc.  

I took an executive decision to dedicate every Friday as my creative and thinking day. 

Blocking everything else out in my diary unless by exception and working with my PA @ina Jeffrey, to police and enforce these boundaries because, make no mistake, it takes commitment to stick to them.

The early results are amazing. I feel free. I don't feel like I'm stuck in a trash compactor, with all the walls closing on me.

By establishing these boundaries, I've given myself permission to be me and do my creative thing, which my mind, body, and soul were crying out for.  

Here are three questions for you:

As a Neurospicy 🌶️ Human, you're much more likely to hit Burnout 🔥

I’ve had a love/hate relationship with it most of my life.

I hated it as a child, teenager and young adult but reconnected with it as a mature student.

As a kid with undiagnosed Dyslexia, Dyscalculia and ADHD, I didn't fit the mould our antiquated education system insisted I be shoehorned into. 

 Everyone wanted to put me in a nice little box because the education system is designed like that, with many boxes stacked on each other, and everyone and everything has a nice little place to be filed away, much like the modern workplace.

I left school with zero qualifications, nothing, not a bean. 

I didn’t even turn up for most of my exams as I didn’t see the point, and nobody was chasing me to do so.

In adult life, thanks to opportunities in the workplace, trust, belief and support over a decade, I went from having not a single GCSE to completing a Master’s equivalent level of study. 

 This was despite struggling with reading challenges (Dyslexia) and crippling executive dysfunction (ADHD).

It turns out that when open, honest and authentic conversations occur and relevant adjustments are made, amazing things can happen 🚀  For the first time in my life, I no longer felt incompetent and incapable of achieving academically.

I now help “educate” and support employers to embrace differences.  I’ve gone full circle, and my connection to learning is complete, albeit a never-ending journey.

My mission now is to inspire, inform, and enable change, to create better opportunities for Neurodivergent people, and to help leaders and organisations embrace, empower, and enable Neurodiversity in the workplace.

Mike, how do I talk about neurodiversity without offending anyone? ”



I often get this question, and I love it. 

Talking about Neurodiversity can be scary as it’s a sensitive topic, and there's always a fear of causing upset. 

BUT

Not wanting to offend someone is an admirable quality and shows you are coming from a good place. 

Us, Neurodivergent folks, can usually tell when someone is genuine or just looking to indirectly cause stress (it happens). 

Fear can slow the trajectory of progress. 

So, it’s essential to push past it and have conversations, even though you may feel a little uncomfortable at first. 

Be brave. 
Be vulnerable. 
Be authentic. 

Growth comes from learning, and how can you learn if you don't ask?? 

My biggest tip when starting conversations about neurodiversity is not to make assumptions. We are all different, we are all human, and we all have our own stories. 

As long as you remember that, you will be absolutely fine 🧡


Life is a rollercoaster 🎢 



After a week of ups and downs this week, it's wonderful to close out on a high (as I'm taking tomorrow as a much needed me day) 😌


Today I got to spend a good hour in the company of someone I greatly admire Isaac Harvey MBE for a forthcoming episode of the Bee Brilliant People Podcast 🎙🎧 


Isaac is every bit the humble, learned and thoughtful leader I expected he would be and it was a privilege to spend time with him.  Keep an eye out for this episode, it's not to be missed 😁


Then I was out and about doing face to face Coaching with one of my ND client's Dr Lorna Pender, all made possible through Access To Work.  Again it's always a pleasure to be part of my clients journey and help them to Thrive 💪

Finally, the icing on the cake 🍰


As an open Autistic dude 👋 I can confirm that I have "special interests" and I mean deep deep levels.  One of these only comes around every 4 years and is the European and World Cups 🏆 sticker album and collection.  I am obsessed! honestly, I'm obsessed and today, joy of all joys, the album is out 😁 (I bought it).


Anyhoo, overall it's not been a bad first week back after time away with the famalam last week in Center Parcs 🌳and tomorrow on my me day, it's off to satisfy my other "special interest" and that's Star Wars and Tattoos - pics will follow 🧡

My advice, based on what I've learned over many years, is to start with yourself, do some introspection, find out what you're doing well as a business, what you're not, what opportunities there are for you to do even better, and finally, what the risks of not doing anything are (also known as a S.W.O.T analysis).

Do some internal investigation 🔍, ask some probing questions, and speak to those who know best—your Neurodivergent people. If you have an Employee Resource Group, utilise them, but this requires working across the business as this is a collective responsibility, not just for HR, the Leadership Team, or Managers. Don't park this at the door of your Neurodivergent people either - it's a collective effort and is a marathon, not a sprint 🏃🏾‍♀️

Neuroinclusion SWOT analysis

Relaxing doesn't come easy for me, just being honest 🤷



My brain 🧠 is constantly racing with thoughts and ideas and being self employed I fear standing still more than anything else.  It's a challenge.


But I did manage to get some downtime this last week and enjoyed being out in the open 🌳 as that's where my busy brain is most at ease.

Neurotypical individuals are all the same. 
They all need the same support, have the same experiences, and the same challenges. 


Sounds ridiculous, right? 

That's because it is. 💯

So why, then, do companies think it's acceptable to treat all neurodivergent employees the same? 😆

A costly mistake I keep noticing lately is blanket training for managers on what neurodiversity means but no information on how that can manifest in the workplace. 

Knowing about neurodiversity and learning about the practicalities needed to manage neurodivergent individuals are two very different things. 

One is the bare minimum tick-box solution, while the other is providing your staff with the tools they need to thrive. 

Regardless of our condition. We are all different people. 

That means we all have varying needs and experiences. 

If you want to actually help your neurodivergent talent, your focus needs to be on creating a culture of inclusivity and belonging for all. 

Knowing the definition of neurodiversity isn't going to help anyone. Least of all your business. 🤦

If you are Neurodiverse or in any way “different” from the societal norm, life is generally more difficult to navigate. 🤦

YOU have to work harder, fight harder, and shout LOUDER just to get your voice heard. 

Sadly, this is especially true for neurodiverse employees. 

Even today, glass ceilings are very real, and more needs to be done to smash through them to ensure equity and belonging for all. 

Imagine being a neurodiverse individual and constantly watching your neurotypical colleagues progress, despite working to the best of your ability, EVERY SINGLE DAY. 😪

That was my reality for 25 years. 

Twenty-five years, I was forced to feel like I wasn't good enough and believe me, it destroys your self-esteem. 

For 25 years, while I worked my ass off, I had to see colleagues that were far less qualified than myself, given opportunity after opportunity. 

While I watched on, all the time, thinking, “What is wrong with me?”. 💔

I’ve realised now that it was never me; it was a flawed system favouring those who conform to the norm. 

If you are a leader or a manager, you have a duty to create a culture of inclusivity for all. Not just a select few.
