Simplicity: The Foundation of Scalability

One of Steve Jobs’ favourite pieces of art was Picasso’s “Bull.” 🐂 This series of drawings starts with intricate detail and evolves into a single, simple line capturing the essence of the bull.

Jobs didn’t just admire this art; he lived by its philosophy. At Apple, simplicity wasn’t just a design principle—it was a way of thinking. He believed that simplicity was the ultimate sophistication and that simplicity, not complexity, is the foundation for scalability.

As Jobs put it:
“It takes a lot of hard work to make something simple, to truly understand the underlying challenges and come up with elegant solutions.”

Picasso’s art and Apple’s ethos share a lesson: complexity is hard to scale. 🚧 The most scalable systems—whether in technology, business, or life—are those built on clarity and simplicity. Complexity might feel impressive, but it often becomes a roadblock to progress.

My takeaway?

Far too often, we speak more than we listen. We ask questions, but instead of truly hearing the answers, we warp what people want into something we feel more comfortable or capable of delivering.

💡 Here’s the hard truth:
If someone tells you what they need, and you’re too busy talking about what you can do—whether it fits their needs or not—you’re not serving them. You’re serving yourself.

And guess what? They notice.

🔑 The secret to success isn’t selling—it’s serving.
If what they’re asking for isn’t something you can deliver, have the integrity to say:
    •          “That’s not something I can help with.”
    •          “Let me connect you with someone who can.”
    •          “I wish you every success and if you ever need [what I offer], I’m here for you.”

This isn’t just good business—it’s respect.

My old mentor used to say: Imagine every person you speak to has “MMFI” tattooed on their forehead: Make Me Feel Important. When you truly listen, when you put their needs ahead of your own sales pitch, you show them they matter.

Because here’s the real magic: When you help enough other people succeed, you will succeed. But only if you stop trying to force people to buy what you want to sell and start delivering what they truly need.

A Great example that most limitations are learned rather than fact 👇

“During a mathematics course at Columbia University, a student fell asleep and woke up to the sound of his classmates talking. 

As the lesson ended, he noticed the lecturer had written two problems on the whiteboard. 

He assumed these were homework assignments, so he copied them into his notepad to tackle later.
When he first attempted the problems, he found them quite difficult. 

However, he persevered, spending hours in the library gathering references and studying until he was able to solve one of the problems, though it was challenging.

To his surprise, the lecturer didn’t ask about the homework in the next class.

Curious, the student stood up and asked, "Doctor, why didn’t you ask about the assignment from the previous lecture?"

The lecturer replied, "Required? It wasn’t mandatory. 

I was simply presenting examples of mathematical problems that science and scientists had not yet solved."

Shocked, the student responded, "But I solved one of them in four papers!"

The solution he discovered was eventually credited to him and documented at Columbia University. 

The four papers he wrote on the issue are still on display at the institution.

The key reason the student was able to solve the problem was that he didn’t hear the lecturer say, "No one has found a solution." 

Instead, he believed it was a problem worth solving and approached it without frustration, ultimately succeeding.

This story serves as a reminder: don't listen to those who tell you that you can't achieve something, as many young people today are surrounded by negativity and doubt. 

Some people intentionally plant seeds of failure and frustration.

You have the power to achieve your goals, overcome obstacles, and fulfill your aspirations. Simply trust in God and keep trying.”

Did you know the term deadline originated in the harshest of circumstances? In the 19th century, it referred to a literal line in prisons—cross it, and you could lose your life. It was a line treated with the utmost respect because the stakes were so high.

While missing a work deadline or personal goal today won’t lead to life-or-death consequences, have we lost sight of the seriousness that deadlines represent?

Deadlines aren’t just dates on a calendar—they’re commitments. Commitments to your boss, your client, your team, and most importantly, to yourself. A goal, as they say, is a dream with a deadline. Without that deadline, it’s no more than a fleeting hope—something ethereal that makes you feel good for a moment but never becomes real.
