Working in cold call sales, you get a lot of wrong phone numbers…

Pretty funny when you have a wrong number that is WAY OFF from the person who answers... 

Just this morning I had a guy answer with a Southern Good Ol Boy Accent - 

"Yeellllo?"

"Yes, hello I’m calling for Esteban?”

“What now? Aint no Estaban here feller. Stop playing with the phone”

And we're off! Starting the day off strong. 

Cold calling…it’s not for everyone.

But it is one way to make a living!

MPC is not the best candidate

It’s the most PLACEABLE candidate 

Many recruiters make this mistake...they find a PHD from Harvard with a nuclear physics degree...and they say WOW! What a GREAT MPC!

Wrong

VERY FEW people need that candidate...also his comp is 300k and he insists on fully remote...he might be a great candidate, but he is not an MPC 

The true MOST PLACEABLE CANDIDATE is someone who is highly qualified and is ALSO looking for something reasonable.

Ideally they are underpaid and you can help them fix that

Or maybe they have a long commute and you can reduce it for them

Maybe their employer refused to promote them, despite their being qualified for a higher role. 

Whatever the reason, you need two elements to be an MPC:

A candidate who is both highly QUALIFIED and highly PLACEABLE

One or the other is not enough.

I closed a 360 deal my first month in recruitment 

It was January and our company had a terrible month

I’ll never forget the last day of the month sitting with my billing manager as he went through the offices numbers

“This is pathetic! Look at this…Bobby, ZERO, Tim, ZERO, Erica - $30k, good job Erica…Jerry ANOTHER ZERO! 

What am I paying you guys for? This kid billed this month and HE JUST GOT HERE!

What’s your name again kid?

“Mike Williams”

Right, Mike Williams out billed half of you! Get to work!”

I’d never seen anything like it. It was exhilarating…it also felt vaguely illegal 

I thought of quitting, but I was 25, broke, and I had bills to pay…so I decided to stay.

9 years later and I’m still here…making cold calls, still trying to get that one more deal in… before the month closes.

"Mike -lets hire this guy asap...I've worked in Corporate America long enough to know...today's job opening is tomorrow's 'hiring freeze...' I'll get your offer letter out today"

Love a decisive hiring manager!

EVERY SINGLE TIME!

I'll have a call schedule at 230pm...it is 2:19pm

So I won't make cold calls...because I don't want to get stuck on a live connect and have to abort the call midway...

EVERY TIME I do that...the 230pm no shows. Just happened again! Guy cost me 11 minutes of talk time. 

New Rule - there is no "C" in my alphabet...for me it goes "A, B, D"

Recruiting is cruel

You can work hard every day...and still fail 

This is the #1 mistake made by hard working recruiters: 

They invest their time into candidates who can DO the job...but don't WANT the job. 

"Look at this candidate pool! These are rock stars!"

Meanwhile the offer letter comes out and they get turn down after turn down. 

The Recruiter's Misconception...they believe their job is to: "Find great candidates"

That is wrong...That would be too easy

No...our job is simply this - Fill positions. Fill them quickly, with the best talent available interested in the role

How hard you worked does not matter...how long it took doesn't matter. 

In this business The ONLY thing that matters...is this:

You can’t talk to people like that!....but maybe we should

Back in my first year of recruiting… I somehow got the CFO of a Private Equity firm to answer my cold call.

My boss was shocked..."he answered for you? What did he say?"

"He is going to sign us up…but that guy is a jerk. He talked down to me the whole time. He was acting like he is better than me."

My boss looked at me for a second and said:

"Well Mike...technically he is better than you."

I was stunned.

"He is a CPA with 30 years in business and he is a leader in Private Equity. You are a recent grad with 5 minutes experience. He is the client and you are the salesperson. Act accordingly. Great job though!"

Maybe his bedside manner too direct...

But I was a headstrong young salesperson and I didn't need kindness...I just needed the truth…

You get two options – Someone who says what you want to hear, or someone with the courage to tell you the truth…even when it hurts.

I’ll take the truth every time.
