I'm only joking.

They actually asked me to provide proof of impressions in lieu of being a few thousand pounds short of the deposit I needed.

Sounds stupid doesn't it?

Because it is...

Now, when you started your business I doubt you said "Listen babe, I'm going to set up my own business so one day I can have an SSI score of 93 and be seen as #2 in my niche on LinkedIn - once I achieve that, I'll walk off into the sunset, and spend retirement counting my impressions on the beach..."

You probably wanted to scale, get a multi-million exit and didn't give two thoughts about LinkedIn's silly little league where simply uploading your ID gives you extra points🙃 

Of course, you're 100% free to choose who, or what, marketing and sales advice you want to listen to on here, but...

The time of year everyone gets to dissect the John Lewis advert and how they personally interpreted it...

Listen Colin, it's not that deep.

Are you now going to spend money in John Lewis? 

Nope = it wasn't very good.

Yes = It's done it's job.

The bit about you now reflecting on your relationship with your own father and the never ending passing of time, doesn't REALLY alter that fact.

Tough times usually get rid of the weakest businesses - so if you are finding it "tough" right now I've got news for you...


If you're good at what you do, proactively targeting the right people, with a service that genuinely fixes a problem they have - they will pay you to fix that problem for them. 

Business really is THAT simple.

Now, whenever I work with a client I do research first - I look at what they're currently doing to win new clients, who their current biggest spenders are, who they consider as their "competition" and then where they actually are when it comes to people finding them or buying from them...

And you know what?

90-95% of your "competitors" are bad and I mean really bad.

The problem you have is, there's a good chance exactly the same as these people.

TikTok, YouTube and people like Simon Squibb have got too many people thinking they can run a business, when the reality is they couldn't run a bath.

Loads of businesses are looking to go "viral" or care about impressions, likes and silly metrics, that don't put cash in the bank, because they're taking marketing advice from people that have 0 experience in sales or selling.

However most of you the same... 

"copying the wrong kids homework" is a phrase I say daily when talking to prospects.

The businesses that are finding it tough usually fall into two categories:

1.The Old School. 

Dying a slow painful death and don't realise - think "all our business comes from word of mouth" or "I don't see how marketing will help us" types.

2. The "let's jump on a fun trend" that chase virality and fame over doing the dirty work and selling types.

You're competing with both these types at the minute.

The old school "marketing or outreach" is beneath us types, that haven't updated the website since 2016, have 20 plus years experience in a niche and think that the same blokes they drank with or played golf with "in the glory days" means they're safe in business.

Newsflash, those "blokes" now ask a junior member of staff to find new suppliers or at least do the initial research and filtering stage.

"Here's the 3 I think we should speak to..." and someone presents 3 options back to "the boss" - your golf game 20 years ago isn't going to get you into that 3 person shortlist, is it?

Nope.

Or you've got the "new school" dancing around on TikTok, jumping on trends and doing ANYTHING but activity and tasks that actually win business this week...

They'd rather dance around and turn themselves into action figures than actually speak to people that'll pay them for their services.

You're either competing with BOTH of those types... or you ARE one of these.

Found first, easiest to understand, simplest to buy from.

THAT is who will be around in 12-18 months...

You know where I am, if you're one of those groups I've mentioned.

This is the 3rd (cold) email they've sent me and I've not responded to any of them... 

Bribing prospects via cold email ISN'T going to generate many qualified leads, imo.

It might mean you're wasting your time with hungry tyre-kickers though.

If you market like this it's stupid.

Especially when you compare it to the strategy where we targeted 19 Premier League football clubs, with 1 video and a LinkedIn DM.

Total outreach time? 45 mins.

Booked meetings? 9 (nine).

Total added to the clients sales pipeline? £720,000.

Number of £100 Deliveroo promises? Zero.

If you're spamming cold email like this and happy with the 0.01% conversion rate while feeding the nation, you do you.

If not... and you liked the numbers in my example above, you know where we are.

It's crazy how many of you aren't doing this simple thing to help you sell more stuff, quicker.

Power Statement Prospecting.

At the moment I'm doing a lot of marketing and sales audits for B2B businesses - that's them coming to us and asking what we'd do to help them sell more stuff in 2026.

We pull apart their prospect journey and then find things they can do to win more business, both inbound and increase results from their outbound effort.

One are of improvements that keeps popping up is utilising Power Statement Prospecting.

I struggled to sell before I did it, I was batting away business after I did it - you can read all about it with my real examples via the link in the comments.

It's quick, it's easy and was key to me getting an £8m exit in just 2.5 years - yes really. 

How much are you missing out on NOT doing it? 

It tells a visitor exactly what it is you do instantly... no need to explain, no searching, no guesswork, and if you do it right makes a visitor instantly put you in the "maybe" or "yes" pile rather than the "no idea what they do, so bin 'em" pile.

Your banner is perfect for it on LinkedIn (as you're reading this on here) and there's other places you'd use it too...

But as I'm a good bloke I've put a link in the comments so you can see what it is and start doing it.

BUT if you're going to read it at least hit "like" and leave a comment or tag the person in charge of sales at your business.

It's the least you can do as a "thank you" isn't it? 😉

If they can't explain or demonstrate how the content they create can be used to target your dream clients, speeds up the sales cycle or wins business. 

You've got a problem.

If they don't understand what (or how important) conversion content is and how to combine that with sales assets to target your highest revenue and dream clients...

You're exactly the kind of business my clients in your niche will steam roll.

And I'm talking as someone that started scaled and exited my own business for £8m in 2.5 years and I started it with just £12,000 in savings.

Yes, lived experience of achieving the thing most business owners dream of - a multi million exit.

I had to learn how to win customers quickly, if I didn't the business never got off the ground, I couldn't pay the mortgage or eat...

That kind of pressure crushes some people or creates diamonds.

Guess when you've done the thing and knows what it actually takes to achieve it you WILL have a different perspective on marketing, sales and business 🤷‍♂️

I (respectfully) disagree with the post below based on actual lived experience myself and doing this for so many B2B businesses, but the number of "couldn't agree more" comments is genuinely scary 😂🤣

These people are often shaping and leading businesses marketing strategy and are, ultimately, making decisions that impact the lifeblood of any business...

REVENUE.

To the business owners & sales directors reading this you should👇

Demand "leads not likes" from your marketing people.
Measure Sales not impressions as a metric of success of their efforts.
Value cash in the bank over views and comments.

We need to talk.

If you think content = leads.

I saw a job opportunity yesterday asking for a LinkedIn, Facebook and Instagram expert.
Great, that’s me! 

But it also said ‘you must be able to generate leads’.

And here’s the thing some people do NOT  understand.

Yes, you can create brilliant, strategic content that attracts and appeals to your ideal audience. 

And, over time, that builds brand awareness, trust, and credibility.

But content alone does NOT guarantee leads.

Marketing and sales are two very different skill sets.

Marketing brings people to the door.

So if someone promises they can do both, I’m sorry, but they’re leading you up the garden path. 

Unless they perform two distinctly separate roles.
Or they’re a magician. 🪄

Can we please stop confusing the two?

Instead, I'll be talking about the importance of asking connections for "endorsements" because they actually improve your SSI score.

Bearing in mind my highest rated endorsement is:

"being endorsed by strangers for skills I don't have..."

It's almost as if most people don't even look at them, let alone make a buying decision based on them.

A lot like your SSI score, in that regard.

Show it to people in the same job roles at similar businesses - aka the people Kayleigh actually wants to be in front of, can work with and SELLS to.

So ignore those "marketing" people that say "reach is down" - this is how you ensure whatever reach you have is actually useful and helps you generate more sales.

We're organically using the algo to put you in more of the RIGHT people's feeds and don't have to pay or boost posts to do it.

But what do I know?🙃 😉 

Stop listening to "marketing" people that tell you to do stuff that isn't aligned to sales and revenue... 

Just like Kayleigh at The International Retail Academy did.

"Your type of marketing wouldn't work in our industry..."

A couple of weeks ago I had a call with a prospect who had worked at the same company for 23 years in a pretty "old school" industry.

Now, keep in mind HE booked the call with me, I didn't approach them. 

You'd assume there must have been a reason for booking the call?

Not getting as much of the business as they used to? 
Too many small customers? 
Wanted more big spenders?
New business has slowed down? 
Not getting a return on paid marketing spend? 
Long sales cycles? 
Website outdated and not converting? Industry feels more competitive? 

Marketing team don't seem to produce anything that helps the sales guys...the list goes on.

Anyway, on the call I asked him to name a couple of businesses he comes up against or sees as "competition" they'd like to win business from...

2nd business he named?

A company I've just added £1.2m in additional revenue to in the last 7 months too, using "the strategy that wouldn't work in our industry..."

See the difference your sales/marketing director biases can potentially make to a business? 

One sales director can see the logic, simplicity, and is open to outside help and doesnt see it as a threat to take on board what we say, as it helps THEM do their job better... 

The other doubles down on the stuff they did 23 years go, that obviously isn't working - and feels threatened.

All because part of our process is to audit the sales/marketing activity and identify the issues with it... 

We can fix it till we diagnose the problems, can we? 

If you're a "proper" business and want "proper" business people creating the stuff that adds money to your bottom line, it should be a no brainer.
