Kia ora, I’m Milly, and I’m an early person. 

Always to my departing train, often to trends, and usually to companies. I’ve worn both the ‘founder’ hat and ‘early employee’ hat, having spent 15years carving out a career on my terms. One that looks weird on a CV but feels great on the inside.

You see, I'm a farm-gal from small-town New Zealand who decided milking cows wasn't the vibe long-term. So since 2012 I've been slowly exploring 65+ countries; leading a weird AF squiggly career path & teaching myself how to build a business on a shoestring. 

Before I turned 30, I co-owned a hostel in Thailand, co-founded a wine tour in Australia, and launched an illustration agency in the UK. 

Today you'll find me on a remote Scottish island, where I'm building Generalist World. 

Why?

Because we all get ~2000 Tuesdays in our career. 

I believe we should spend these doing the work that energizes us & creates the most positive impact (not adhering to a traditional, linear path).

Hi, I'm Milly. Growing up, I was a farm girl from a very small town in New Zealand, but alas, the world was calling. In 2012, I began travelling the slowly. 65+ countries later, after living everywhere from the fast-paced streets of Manila to the serene jungles of Mexico, I still haven't quite made it back to NZ. 

Before my 30th birthday, I have co-owned a hostel in Thailand, co-founded a wine-tour in Australia and founded an illustration agency in the UK. I'm a creative generalist who's well versed in start-up life; which really means - I have the most fun when I'm working on lots of different things. 

You'll find me living on a little island in the Scottish highlands with a population of just 170 people building the home of the generalist (generalist.world)

3yrs ago I attended Websummit as a nervous attendee, plagued with imposter syndrome, with a 3month old company called: Generalist World 🌀. Today I returned to MC the second-largest stage for an entire day. 

I wrangle my way onto these stages to say unequivocally: we are generalists! We are here, we are valuable, and we are vital to the future of work.

The stages are getting bigger. The word is spreading. The impact is deepening. And this is a win for all of us.

Saying "screw you" to the traditional career path landed me on one of the biggest stages in the world, Websummit!

I can trace the moment my life changed almost to the minute: it was when I discovered the word "generalist".  I was sitting in my 200year old cottage in the highlands, searching for a job, being sooo uninspired by my options. 

So specialized
So narrow
So rigid

Why couldn't I work in the way that I'm proven to work best? Being the adaptable, squiggly, get-shit-done person on the team? Why was my generalism seen as a bad thing?

I guess you could say "Generalist" hit me in the face like a wet fish. 

And with every person I met who identified with this non-linear, squiggly path I became more and more impressed. I knew I needed to throw my whole force behind making generalists visible, valuable and absolutely vital to the future of work. 

The road here has been ROCKY AF 😂 But the more I leaned into my weirdness, the more I owned my generalism - the more doors that opened. I do a backflip every time I hear the same thing happen for folks in the Generalist World 🌀 network

Because as soon as YOU believe your generalist skillset is valuable, the sooner the world will believe it too. 

It takes all of us to change the world. 

And saying 'no thankz!!!" to a traditional path that doesn't serve us, is how we do it.

You can:

~ take a break from sending your regular newsletter (just let your people know)

~ raincheck that partnership meeting till January 

~ try and shift the hours you work, to get as much daylight as possible

~ cancel that 'coffee chat' if you don't have the capacity

~ carve out time to plan a delicious December, making sure creativity and movement and loved ones are a priority

~ role model what it looks like to ask for help, and graciously receive it 

~ get in your coziest PJs and go to bed at 7:30pm. I tried this the other night. 10/10 would do again. 

It's that time of the year where everyone is a bit frazzle-dazzled, manic, stretched, and juggling 800 things. Let's just name that, you don't have to perform 365 days a year. 

I promise, the world will not stop spinning if you slow down just a smidge.

Ever feel like you’re living in the time that you’ll look back on and be like, wow they were THE GOOD OL’ DAYS? Because…..

Same! 

In the past 36hrs I’ve got to:

• speak at The Portfolio Collective on an amazing panel 

• record a live podcast with Eric Zimmer from The One You Feed  

• hug Kristin Fracchia from Gamma at not one but TWO events 

• wrangle my cousin-in-law Caspar into enjoy the feast in the Speakers Lounge 😏

• bumped into Dan Shipper (you should check out the Q&A we did together on YouTube, it was great!)

• hid in a corner to recharge (necessary) 

 • jam with Franky Athill on fun Jack & Jill collabs 

• tonight I’ll join the Websummit speakers dinner 

• and tomorrow I’ll MC the Websummit Marketing Stage from 10am - 3pm! 
 
What a gift it it so realize these ARE the days I’ll look back on and grin from ear to ear

You get to own the most precious resource in the entire world, your time. EG:

This week, I'm moving house. IDK how I got to 34 and have only ever moved bedrooms, never the *whole* house before, but here we are lol. 

And, um, this is ALOT. Not just the stress of timing / organising / shifting everything. 

But the emotional toll - this has been my home for 5years. It's been the space where I've grown as a person the most. It's been my safe place. Where I learned to play guitar. Where I bathe under the stars in the "hot tub" (an old cast iron bathtub). Where I write poetry. Where I've read 5000 books snuggled up in bed with a tea. It's where I have a flock of wild birds. It's where I built a pond that housed tadpoles that weirdly never grew into frogs.

And, of course, it's the home I started Generalist World 🌀 from. 

Letting go of it feels like letting go a part of me. 

So honestly, thank goodness I have flexible work. I'm able to pause so I can really be here for this process. Can't imagine how awful it'd be to have to say goodbye to my home AND meet my regular KPIs for the week. 

I know this comes from a place of privilege, but I'm naming it because I want us to build a world where its not a privilege - it's just normal. 

I want EVERYONE to be able to do their best work, and it's impossible to do your best work 52 weeks of the year. 

Build for flexibility. Create a culture of compassion. Normalize time off for life's moments.

We're not a traditional startup. We don't subscribe to hustle culture. Our community is built on being calm, gentle, genuine. 

We're unashamedly weirdos and geeks and newbies figuring it out. 

We walk the line of being supportive friends and ambitious colleagues. We ask "what kind of person do you want to be?" and then we help each other make it happen. We see work as an energy resource; something that can fill our cup. We think rest and taking space is cool. 

We're honest about our shortcomings and challenges. And we invest in celebrating (yes, our end of year party did just so happen to be at a spa hotel 💆‍♀️ 🧖 )

The work we do is living; I've been in New Zealand for the past week and have been barely online. But I logged onto Slack this morning to see an ECOSYSTEM of conversation, connection, support. I cannot tell you how incredible this feels - the community runs so deep. 

Generalist World 🌀 is wayyy bigger than myself, Ece and Emily. We just so happen to be one of the many stewards who co-create it. 

It's a privilege of my career to pave the way for this way of working: collaborative, human, challenging, impactful.

Just ran a workshop for hundreds of folks on how to FINALLY launch your newsletter in 2026. We covered how to land on your golden theme, picking your best-bet format, & why your newsletter needs to have its own culture

Few takeaways:

1. You'll try 50+ growth strategies and ONE will probably work. Do that one lots!
eg: the most growth we've seen by FAR is the Generalist Archetype quiz, and there's a graveyard of other experiments

2. Surprise n delight in the welcome sequence
eg: we include discounts to our fave brands like Notion, Gamma, Lovable and beehiiv. So people unexpectedly get value right off the bat.

3. Use surveys!!!!! (+ include a rant space)
eg: when someone subscribes to GW, they get sent a poll which gives us so much high quality data which we can a) use to improve the newsletter and b) gather audience demographic for sponsors

4. Polls are brilliant
eg: we use polls as an easy , automated way to gather feedback on our newsletters, and to opt out of a specific newsletter (for example: job opportunities)

5. Monetize at YOUR right time
eg: it took me 3 years before I actually started taking on newsletter sponsorship. This is really late in 'traditional' terms but it worked for us because my #1 goal was to build trust.
