I pointed to Wise...

Wise has been cutting prices for over a decade and still growing like a "compounding machine".

FY2025 results:
- Take rate: 0.53% (down from 0.67% in FY2024)
- Cross-border volume: £145.2B (+28% YoY)
- Active customers: 15.6M (+21% YoY)
- 65% of transfers arrive in <20 seconds
- Profit before tax: £565M (21% margin)

Most founders see a lower take rate as a revenue leak.
Wise sees it as price leadership.

Why it works?
- Lower, transparent fees → higher trust
- Trust → more volume.
- More volume → same or better unit economics at scale.
- Speed as a feature → Instant-like transfers aren’t just nice to have they kill churn before it starts.
- Market signal→  Every price cut reinforces Wise’s position as the “fair fees” category leader.

What founders need to catch here is that:
If your product is a money pipe or any high-frequency, high-switching-cost service
Trust and speed are your brand.

Pricing is just the lever you pull to reinforce them.

Wise didn’t get to 15.6M customers by defending margins at all costs.

They got there by earning the right to scale, one transfer at a time.

Lower prices didn’t kill them.

They made them impossible to ignore.

The CMO you want is NOT the one you think you need.

A founder I worked with came to me and said

"I need a creative marketing genius. Someone who can build our brand and make us famous."

We found one with an amazing portfolio, worked at all the shiny startups and had tons of awards.

3 months later, we’re at zero pipeline growth.

The founder was frustrated.

What went wrong?

Well, what this startup really needed wasn’t a storyteller. It was a systems CMO.

CMOs aren’t interchangeable. They fall into three broad archetypes:

1. Brand Builders → Amazing at storytelling, campaigns, positioning.

Great for post-PMF stage, when your product already has traction.

Weak at actual GTM. They’ll make your logo look cool and your LinkedIn feed fancy, but the pipeline doesn’t move.

Can feel transactional and miss the brand narrative.

Make marketing + sales + ops work together.

Build repeatable GTM engines.

Ensure the pipeline flows while the brand story grows in the background.

Here’s the catch: the founder hired a brand builder to solve a GTM problem.

It’s like hiring a Michelin-star chef to run a fast-food kitchen :)

The result? Months of wasted time, money, and morale.

So here’s the lesson for founders:

Step 1: Diagnose the actual problem. Growth stagnating? Revenue low? Sales team frustrated?

Step 2: Map it to the CMO archetype that solves that problem.

Step 3: Hire for skill fit, not glitter fit.

Your next CMO shouldn’t just look good on paper. 

They should move the needle on the business problem you actually have.

Want revenue? Hire a Performance Operator.

Want a flywheel that scales? Hire a Systems CMO.

As simple as that!

Dubai is the world’s most expensive A/B test.
Here’s why I say that.

When our agency set up in Dubai, I thought we’d get time to ease in, experiment slowly, and find our rhythm.
Reality? You don’t get that luxury here.

This city is like running ads with a €1M/day budget.
If you’re wrong, you find out fast.
If you’re right, you scale faster than anywhere else.

And the data backs it:

📍 Fintech: UAE’s fintech market will jump from $3.1B (2024) to $5.7B (2029). Investors are testing hundreds of new products and burning millions to find the winners.

📍 Real estate: H1 2025 saw $117B in deals. Half of them off-plan, meaning people are literally buying the idea of a building. That’s marketing as a stress test: can your story sell something that doesn’t exist yet?

📍 Crypto x property: 15,000 leaders flew in for TOKEN2049 this year. Developers are selling apartments in Bitcoin. It’s the ultimate experiment: can narrative and trust make crypto mainstream in real assets?

📍 PropTech: VR listings boost engagement by 70%. DAMAC poured $100M into digital-twin tools. Agencies that don’t adapt will be filtered out like a bad variant.

That’s what Dubai really offers: not “opportunity” in the cliché sense, but a high-velocity feedback loop.

Every founder, every marketer, every developer here is testing ideas against a market that doesn’t tolerate slow learning.

For me, Dubai is proof that the right environment doesn’t just support growth it pressure-tests it, breaks it, and forces it to evolve until it works.

Evernote had everything. I mean everything from notes, scanning, collaboration, templates, web clipping, integrations galore to almost everything.

And yet… it didnt succeed.

Its users were confused. Onboarding sucked. 

Engagement flatlined.

Now look at Notion. 

Same market. Way smaller team. Way fewer features at launch. 

They picked one thing: team docs and nailed it.

Users got it. Loved it. Adoption exploded. 

By 2022? $10B valuation. 

Evernote? Sold for $135M.

Slack did the same thing:
- No video. No polls. No file storage. 
- Just chat that worked perfectly.

Users didn’t care about the missing stuff. 

They cared it solved their problem.

Here’s the harsh truth founders need to know…

More features ≠ more users. 

It’s usually the opposite.

Onboarding > everything else. 

If users can’t get started in 5 minutes, they leave.

Clear promise > fancy product. 

Say one thing. Solve it well. Repeat it everywhere.


So, before adding the next shiny feature, ask yourself:

"Is this core to my user’s problem?"

"Will it make onboarding easier or harder?"

"Or am I just trying to show off?"

If it’s not solving a real problem, it’s probably hurting your growth…
