Like you, I've asked LinkedIn many times "please, fix the DM inbox...please?" And they said I should try their new puzzle games instead.

So I'm fixing it myself. Follow me as I share my bumpy ride bootstrapping a small SaaS business around a tool I love.

It is with a heavy heart that I inform you that Linky, formally known as The LinkedIn Inbox, is dead. 

Authorities are currently investigating his cause of death and I am cooperating fully. 

Tbh, he probably died waiting for you to clean up the mess of DMs overflowing out of the top of its head, but what do I know. 

I'm aware that he had many enemies, but I kindly ask that you refrain sharing why you hate him in the comments.

LinkedIn's inbox is crap - trykondo.com instead

the first lesson I learned in cold email years ago was that

the ONLY purpose of the subject line

was to make you open the thing 

and the only purpose of the first line 

was to make you read the next one

and so on...

also, if your email is a XXL sized wall of text going on about who you are what you do and what you purportedly help me with then I'm just probably just going to completely ignore it because it is way too much work to read and I rather go on to the next email which is either less hard to read or from a more important person like my boss 

(skipped the paragraph above? my point exactly)

if you're trying to crack how to write LinkedIn DMs, the same generally applies

right?

Our average user sent 30-50 DMs last week.

Brooklyn Wilson sent a whopping 804. Which booked her enough meetings to fill 50% of her quota as an SDR at Mercury. 

She did this with 0 automation tools and 0 AI agents.

Just a handful of keyboard shortcuts, a bundle of snippets, and a bucket full of hustle.

If you're trying to book more meetings, you could spend your week figuring out the perfect auto lead gen engine you got from some guy's lead magnet and praying to the cloud that it works as advertised.

Also whoever shipped this feature picked really ugly default icons for them so I suggest you fix that : ) 

Oh, and some other new feature decided to sneak into the settings page...

At my first job, clients would pay us $50,000 to go talk to a handful of their users and suggest how to build better products.

I thought that was absolutely insane, why wouldn't they go talk to their own users and figure it out themselves???

Well, it turns out when you're a huge company with 27 layers of management... 

Decision-makers are so far removed from the end user that you need an external consultant to go:

- stick their ears to the ground 
- think deeply about what users really need 
- articulate it in a way the bureaucracy understands
- help lobby for "buy-in"

You even find the phrase "voice of the customer" on some corporate job descriptions.

And btw, after we write a slide deck, do a huge presentation, it takes 249 more internal meetings and 6-12 months for new products or upgrades to ship.

This is why LinkedIn... 

will take a whole ice age to learn how power users need a better DM inbox, and another to build it. It's not that they are bad, it's just that they are big 🦣🦣🦣

At my current job, I pay myself $0 to spend >10 hours a week talking to customers. Also, I'm not just the "voice of the customer." I AM the customer, and use the darn thing for hours a day, 7 days a week.

This is why startups ship products better, cheaper, faster. 

If you want your DM inbox fixed, you can wait 2 ice ages for the big company to do it, or you just kondo it done today.

I've always accepted ALL my LinkedIn connect requests.

What's changed: instead of clicking the button on repeat, I now simply:

1. Go to "Invites" in Kondo
2. Cmd + A 
3. "Y" 

If you're more picky than me about your connects, you can go through them one by one instead and hit Y and N. 

And, when you're done, the lucky ones you accepted will show up in the Connections tab where you can say Hi! to everyone who looks friendly (and also say Hi! to the Kondo house cat) 

Do y'all accept all like me?

I sent 465 DMs in the past week (blue line)

I got that from this analytics thingy I've been working on.

Like everyone else in the world I have SHINY OBJECT SYNDROME. So I hustled my cofounder and said we needa build this thing. 

He said NO WAY, do you even REALIZE the amount of data engineering required for something like this? Are you planning to hire us 3 more engineers overnight?

I was sad : (

But then! I thought of some super sneaky way to hack this into the product (without said engineering effort). 

I got excited again! And showed it to our advisor Gaurav Vohra today.

He said wait, wait, wait, don't do that. 

I said why?

He convinced me not to do it (story for another day).

In conclusion, not going to ship this anytime soon. 

But since I did all this work already and got some people excited (eep) I'm going to give select customers some form of access.

Why "Look at this cold outreach I got! It's so bad!!!" posts keep showing up on your feed:

1. Why spend hours coming up with a good post when you can just complain about something in your inbox and have people react, because... 

2. "This thing is crap" attracts eyeballs and has good algo karma.

3. AI gets so much hype and we're sick of it sometimes. So it's nice to be able to blame bad things on bots and talk about how they're responsible for all this crap we get as well.

4. There are A LOT of folks on linkedin selling sales-related services and software (me included). If they can tell you why it's bad and how it should be done instead, you might trust them more and hire them to help you someday.

5. Inboxes are INTENSELY emotional places. OMG I CAN'T BELIEVE I WASTED A SECOND OF MY TIME on this piece of nonsense outreach when I have a million actually important messages to get to.

6. Most people don't know they can easily skip the frustration by simply hitting E on they keyboards to archive bad messages***

***works in Superhuman ootb, works in Gmail if you enable shortcuts, and works in Linkedin DMs if you use Kondo.
