Freelance writers: The reason you’re not getting a response to those LinkedIn posts advertising a writing job

Every day on LinkedIn, we see posts informing us about freelance writing or part-time content marketing roles. 

They ask us to comment on the post or DM them. 

But when you do, you get no response or are often turned down. 

If this has happened to you repeatedly, don’t beat yourself up. 

It’s just that when a company advertises it like that, it has the Upwork effect, and scores of people start contacting the person with "competitive rates". 

Many of these posts get hundreds of comments, and we have no idea how many more people are directly DMing.

Getting that job will be extremely hard. Your chances might be higher if you have excellent writing samples and send a highly personalized message.

However, an easier way to land a writing gig is to contact editors and content managers before they advertise it. 

Most companies that are already running successful content strategies want more writers to help churn out more content. 

If you see anyone with an active blog who is also publishing other types of content, such as white papers, case studies, and reports, reach out to them. 

These people need content, but they are so busy running their content marketing strategies that they don’t have the time to look for writers. 

When you reach out to them, you are competing with far fewer people and will be more likely to get a client. 

And don’t be surprised if they respond to you with a message like, “I was thinking about hiring a writer the other day, but have been soooo busy to advertise it. Thank you so much for reaching out.”

Don't do cold outreach daily to get freelance writing clients… Do THIS instead.


Everyone knows you need to market your freelance writing services to get clients and avoid the feast and famine cycle.

No marketing > no clients > no freelance writing business.

It doesn't need to be hours and hours of marketing; it just needs to be enough to get the right message to the right person at the right time to generate 1 to 3 high ticket clients a month

The keywords here are “right message to the right person at the right time”.

So the question becomes, what is the BEST way to get the right message to the right person at the right time?

Here are some of the tactics I see most writers use to get clients today:

1. Applying to jobs on Upwork daily

2. Connecting with "PeRfEcT PrOsPeCtS" on LinkedIn

3. Cold outreach (you know those DM's that say, "I really loved your profile, Mitt... buy my stuff."

All this stuff works fine...

However, it takes TIME and ENERGY.

Time = something we'll never get back

Energy = there's a cost to energy-depleting behaviors

There's a much better way.

Pre-qualification + Value first outreach

Instead of reaching out to everyone, we pre-qualify clients who are most likely to hire freelance content writers.

We then use a value-first outreach strategy to warm up our clients before pitching and magic happens

Using pre-qualification and value first outreach, we can:

- Find high paying prospects before they advertise a freelance writing job and attract hordes of writers we need to compete with

- Stand out from the sea of generic cold pitches

- and ultimately make pitches that high ticket writing clients can’t turn down

And it doesn’t have to be a lot of pitching, either—just a handful of pitches a week to the right person can explode your writing business.

I call it Hot Outreach.

(I've been doing this for 14 years, so I can get away with corny framework names. Plus, some of my really smart friends like the name )

It's really simple: We figure out clients who need a lot of content and pay their writers well, and then use our hot outreach strategy, and magic happens

1. You get hired by high-paying clients who need content every month

2. Happy clients start referring you to their friends and acquaintances

3. Prospects are pre-sold on you

4. You wake up to people in your inbox and DMs asking how they can work with you instead of you having to chase them

5. Oh, and you get back TIME + ENERGY so you can spend more time serving clients well and hanging out with your family and friends.

This mistake can ruin your freelance writing business

One thing many writers fear is the feast and famine cycle. 

The famine phase leads to a lot of insecurity. 

So, when the feast phase starts, and plenty of work keeps coming in, you try to take up all the work that comes your way. 

My recommendation is don’t do this. 

You should only take up as much work as you can handle. 

It’s because if you take on more work than you can handle, the quality of your work will suffer, you won’t meet deadlines, and you’ll have highly disappointed clients. 

And what are these clients going to do…

They will tell everyone about the bad experience they had working with you. 

This will ruin your reputation, and fewer people will want to work with you in the future. 

This is why you should only take on as much work as you can handle. 

If excess work comes your way, you can ask clients to join a waitlist. If you haven’t already, you should set up a page where they can sign up for your waitlist.

When time frees up, you can email that list. The people who didn’t hire another writer will still be interested in working with you. 

Another option is to refer them to someone else. This could be an agency or another freelance writer. 

If it is an agency, you can ask for a referral fee (many agencies pay well for referrals). If it is a writer, you can have a partnership where you refer clients to each other when you’re busy. 

If you don’t want to turn this work down, the best option is to hire a writer or two to assist you.
