Faye sworn in as Senegal president, cites 'profound desire for change' Senegal's once jailed opposition candidate Bassirou Diomaye Faye was sworn in on Tuesday as the nation's fifth and youngest president ever, promising to restore stability and bring economic progress.

The 44-year-old former tax inspector defeated Amadou Ba, the candidate of outgoing President Macky Sall's ruling coalition, by a landslide in the first round of voting, reflecting high hopes for change in the country of around 18 million.

"The results of the election showed a profound desire for change," Faye said after taking the oath of office at a ceremony he attended with his two wives.

Over a dozen heads of state and regional representatives attended the inauguration, including #Nigeria's President Bola Tinubu, #Ghana's President Nana Akufo-Addo and #AfricanUnionCommission Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat.

The military juntas of Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger also sent representatives.

The smooth transition was a welcome boost after three years of unprecedented political turmoil in #Senegal that had raised concern about democratic backsliding in the #coup-prone region of #WestAfrica, where juntas have seized power and cut ties with traditional Western allies in favour of Russia.

"Senegal will be a country of hope, at peace, with an independent justice system and a stronger democracy," Faye said, promising to manage affairs ethically and to build the #economy.

🌟Many may be surprised to see this but there is a functioning Metro Line in Lagos, Nigeria. As a matter of fact, there is another metro line that was commissioned some months back which is better than this but is yet to start commercial operations of transporting people. 

📜For the benefit of those who don't know, apart from the Metro Line train there are functioning trains that travel interstate in Nigeria. Also, there’s an ongoing project of train that will travel from the Northern part of Nigeria to the city of Niamey in Niger Republic.

What will it take for Sub-Saharan African countries to come together and develop a train network that would travel among our cities ❔ 

🤝Imagine a train that Travels from Lagos, Cotonou, Yaounde, Lome, Ouagadougou, Accra, Abidjan, Monrovia, Freetown, Bamako, Conakry, Bissau, Banjul, Dakar and by extension Kinshasa.  

This would accrue both social and economic benefits to our people. 

Such a train can foster regional integration, boost trade, and enhance cultural exchange. 🚆 It can promote economic growth, facilitate tourism, and improve accessibility, offering convenience and connectivity to residents while nurturing cross-border cooperation and solidarity. 🌍

The green tipping point: Is 2024 the year when carbon commitments change lease markets at scale?

Imagine a marketplace where companies can buy and sell "pollution permits." 

a. The government sets a limit on how much pollution companies can create. 

b. Companies that pollute less than their limit can sell their extra permits to companies that pollute more. 

c. This system creates a price for pollution, encouraging companies to find ways to pollute less. 

This marketplace is called a carbon market, and it's a way to fight climate change by making it more expensive to pollute. 

There are two main types of carbon markets:

Required: Governments set a limit on how much pollution companies can release. Companies that pollute less than their limit can sell their extra permits to companies that pollute more. This encourages companies to find ways to reduce their pollution.

Voluntary: Companies can choose to buy permits to offset their pollution, even if they aren't required to. This helps fund projects that reduce pollution elsewhere, like planting trees.

* The “high trend of attacks on school facilities” has worsened the already dire humanitarian situation in Gaza

* “No education is happening in Gaza at all for nearly six months” UN-partnered report

* 86.2 per cent of the 563 school buildings in Gaza either directly hit or damaged 

* 212 school buildings in Gaza received a direct hit from the Israeli army

* 165 of the 212 that received a direct hit were in areas designated for evacuation by the Israeli military

* More than one in two school premises run by the UN agency for Palestinian refugees have also been hit (57 per cent) 

* Additional findings “provide evidence for military use of schools” by Israel “since the beginning of the escalation”. This includes “several concerning reports, pictures and videos showing Israel using schools as detention, interrogation centres and military bases.”
