For transportation/logistics networking in Chicago, the traditional Serbian cookout competition at the Holy Resurrection Serbian Orthodox Cathedral can be as important as a major freight conference.

The number of quality carriers here probably rivaled major national events, and it was my pleasure to be Miljan Ivezic's guest and his highly competitive Load Monster Inc. team (with "cook" Saša in charge). 
It goes without saying that the quality of food (and drinks) was out of this world...

I was also lucky to bump into my old friend Dusan Stojkovic, who was volunteering at the booth for his charity Срби за Србе / Srbi za Srbe / Serbs for Serbs.

I don’t always go to the far Chicago suburbs… but when I do, I prefer #FreightAfter5 events.

Humble workout station next to the running/bike track in Skokie, IL doesn’t look like a freight networking hotspot, but so here I met here multiple carrier owners/managers/drivers, small manufacturer, few brokers, bankers, FinTech executives, angel investors…

That is more than many industry specific networking events. 
Laptop out, timer set for 5min, some good form pull-ups,  makes an easy conversation starter. Just like John 🅰️ Rogers Roberts likes to say, always share what you do and what problems you solve.

After visiting the charming city of Chattanooga, TN, the heart of Freight Alley,  for the spectacular F3: Future of Freight Festival, I’m back on my home turf: the Freight Capital of the USA, for the Traffic Club of Chicago event, Beyond the Boardroom: Empowering Inclusive Leadership.

It’s another great opportunity to connect with industry leaders, right in the heart of Chicago’s business district.

#FreightAfter5  Happy Hour at Sonny Acres Farm was, as always, a great event for transportation and logistics professionals in the Chicago suburbs, but there’s more to it...

The effort that Alex Steen put into organizing this group, and that Matt Joyaux and Chris Joyaux from The SERV Companies invested in hosting it, was truly something special. Anyone planning a similar event in the future should take notes (myself included).

As a father of three boys under 14, I’ve been to my fair share of suburban pumpkin patches and Halloween festivals, many of them “the biggest,” “oldest,” or “most entertaining.” Let’s just say I was rarely impressed… but you do it for the kids. 

Sonny Acres Farm, however, was something else entirely. I learned that grown-ups can have fun at fall festivals too! When Matt suggested the hayride, I joined just to be polite; but wow, was I wrong.

This “simple” hayride turned out to be a 15-minute, high-production experience with more than 40 actors and elaborate scenery. It’s incredibly well done, safe, and family-friendly, with free entry and optional paid rides.

I never thought I’d be posting on LinkedIn about Halloween fun… but this was truly a 10/10 experience, both personally and professionally.
