A petition 📖for reparations for American Descendants of Slavery (ADOS) is justified by historical evidence of policies that have critically harmed the black community.

Exhibit A: Housing Policies 

The Homestead Act of 1862 provided  settlers with the chance to obtain 160 acres of public land to live on and improve the property. The Act  excluded American Descendants of Slavery through discriminatory practices and lack of access to essential funding for land ownership.

Plessy v. Ferguson (1896) was a landmark decision by the United States Supreme Court that upheld the constitutionality of segregation laws under the doctrine of "separate but equal." This decision laid the groundwork for the implementation of racial deed covenants, which were used in real estate transactions to prevent people of certain races from buying or occupying property in certain neighborhoods.

In a 7-1 decision, the Supreme Court upheld the Louisiana law, ruling that segregation did not violate the Fourteenth Amendment as long as the separate facilities were equal. Writing for the majority, Justice Henry Brown argued that "the object of the Fourteenth Amendment was undoubtedly to enforce the equality of the two races before the law, but in the nature of things, it could not have been intended to abolish distinctions based upon color."

This decision set a dangerous precedent for racial segregation in the United States, as it legitimized the concept of separate facilities for different races as long as they were deemed equal in quality. This led to the implementation of racial deed covenants in real estate transactions, where property owners inserted clauses in their deeds that prohibited people of certain races from buying or occupying their property.

Racial deed covenants were used to enforce segregation in neighborhoods, effectively creating "whites-only" or "blacks-only" areas. These covenants were enforced through legal means, with property owners facing penalties if they violated the terms of the covenant.

Stop overcomplicating your job search. 

There's no need to make an already stressful process 10x harder on yourself. 

In a tough market like this one, you've gotta stay focused on the things you CAN control. 

Here are my 5 best hacks for simplifying your job search in 2024: 

1. Use Teal as your all-in-one tool

Hands-down my # 1 suggestion. It's like a CRM for your job search, helping you manage your pipeline, stay on top of the status of every application and networking opportunity, and keep all the different versions of your resume organized. 

2. Diversify the job boards you use 

LinkedIn's not the only place recruiters post jobs. Check out sites like Indeed, BuiltIn, Wellfound, Google, etc. You gotta cast a wide net. (And if you have specific target companies in mind, check their careers pages regularly.) But instead of saving all those jobs natively on each individual website, use Teal's free Chrome extension to save them all to one central tracker. Such a time saver—you can thank me later.

3. Use the job description as your blueprint 

You wouldn't go on a road trip without a map, right? So why apply for a job without reading the JD? Think of it as the cheat code for understanding what a company's looking for. No more guessing. Teal highlights all the most important skills and keywords from the job description and shows you where in your career history you already have that experience (or similar experience) and how you can frame your wins in the best light. 

4. Save all the job descriptions

When you're applying for 10, 20, 50 jobs, it's hard to remember which was which. But that feeling when you get an email from the recruiter weeks later and the JD is no longer online? The worst. Make sure you save a copy of all the job descriptions for the roles you're applying to in case it's taken down. You can do that manually, but Teal automatically keeps the JDs for you when you save a job to your tracker.

5. Leverage AI 

Don't make stuff up that isn't true - but AI can be a HUGE time-saver when it comes to your search. Instead of spending hours tweaking your resume and writing custom cover letters for each role, use Teal as a sidekick to help improve your bullet points and write the first draft of your cover letters. You'll need to edit to make sure it's all accurate, but it's so much easier than staring at a blank page. 

At the end of the day, it's up to you to show a company you've got exactly what they're looking for. Simple, not easy. But you've got this.
