AS A GARMENT TECHNOLOGIST I have had many years of experience and I enjoy working in a team atmosphere and willing to help out here ever possible and also if time is required that too as well. The clothing industry at present is in a mad rush and everything requires to be urgently dealt with and I can cope with that. Over the years I have worked for many companies making a variety of clothes, but I have always considered that every day is a “school day” and there are always new things to learn and that is why I find the clothing industry very exciting. As a Garment Technologist I have in some companies, amended the patterns to go for grading, measuring the pattern and then the garment made from it, following through all amends and updating the spec. taking photos of the first sample to factory sample, PP’s, gold seals and also prepare a workbook for the factory, detailing all aspects of the garment – if there is binding, what the finished measurements are, if any tape is used, what the finished measurements are. In one company I also “what’s up” the factories to make sure that any issues they had was dealt with so that the production would not be delayed. AS A PATTERN CUTTER I have 30+ years in the clothing industry, I have worked with various types of fabrics, from silks to jerseys, light woven to heavy woven, lace to sequins and everything in-between. I have worked with various finishes to ensure that the inside of the garments is as good as the outside of the garment My first pattern, I would discuss with the designer what her requirements are, also discuss the fabric if there is limitations, but also I would find out from the team what they do, If the pattern requires a drape, I would try to either get the same fabric, if there is enough for a toile, or something close to the fabric. Once the toile is made, the designer and I would discuss the toile, if someone else sees it on the dummy and wishes to comment – I would OK it, after all it is all about working in the team. The last thing a team needs is a “know it all”. One has to get along with everyone and respect people as you wish to be respected yourself. Once the first pattern is done and it goes to the machinist, I would make sure that the spec was done, also if there is any extra information like sketches of finishes and other details are all included, also if what I have done is complicated to understand the first time it, the toile would accompany the first pattern.
