I met John Falcone and Chase Goulet at design events here in New York, for a period of time while running Toil, I was going to 2-3 events per week.

Consistently I would run into these two, I became used to keeping an eye out for them at every event I dropped into.

And that’s why it makes so much sense that they’re now running their own design event, Double Diamond.

Their event format is unique, and especially relevant for design teams building with AI.

They’ve had some big guests already including Arjun Mahesh, Head of Design at Hebbia and Simon Corry, Senior Director of Product Design at Ramp.

'AI slop.’ The name kind of says it all.

When image gen dropped, the narrative was clear: designers were doomed.

The story went, "the barriers to create are now zero, now everyone will be a creator."

That's... kinda not how things are shaking out. 

Most consumers don't actually want to create, the vast majority consume, in media this is called the 1% rule.

We're seeing that in real-time, as the novelty of image gen wears off. Apps like Sora feel like hellscapes of low quality sh#t. 

Ever since image gen was released in 2022, Google search interest for it has fallen nearly 80%.

A McKinsey report found that while more than 1/3 of companies use AI to generate images, text generation is far more widespread.

Meanwhile, sites relying on AI visuals have seen drops in image-search traffic. Audiences are starting to tune out what they see as “AI slop.”

Where once it felt like designers and creatives might be the first to go. 

It feels like visual outputs are actually turning out to be the most low value, low quality slop of the entire AI trough.
