When someone says you're "too much," the only correct response is: "Go find less."

I've been thinking about this all week after commenting on Shali Rana Reed's post about women being labeled aggressive, bossy, difficult, awkward, too much.

Here's why this is living rent-free in my head:

Women are told we NEED a personal brand to advance. We can't just show up, do good work, and get promoted on potential. We have to be visible. Strategic. Opinionated. Confident.

But the second we actually do that? We're too much.

Too strategic → You're overthinking it 
Too visible → You're attention-seeking 
Too confident → You're arrogant 
Too effective → You're in the weeds

Meanwhile, the guy doing the exact same thing? He's executive material. He's "showing initiative."

I'm done with it.

If someone says you're too much, that's data. It tells you they don't have the capacity for your level of thinking, your intensity, your vision. That's a them problem, not a you problem.

The right role, the right team, the right company won't ask you to shrink.

So keep being too strategic. Too visible. Too confident. Too effective. Too much.

The right people are ready for you in all your glory.

And the ones who can't handle it? They can go find less. ✨

Beyond my work, I speak at events and conferences on content marketing, multicultural communication, and women in tech. I grew up in NYC, got my bachelor's and master's in the Netherlands, and then ended up in South Africa for almost a decade before moving back to the US, this time to Phoenix AZ. Living all over the world has helped me understand a range of personalities and cultures, have casual competency in a variety of languages, and also completely ruined my accent - although I'm told it sounds cool.

I'm also married to a software developer and raising our incredible second-grader, regularly cuddled by two cats.

This advice sorta feels like "git good, n00b" (Old gamer reference, sorry/not sorry)

At the same time, when people talk about the skills that they need for success as they progress through careers, it's increasingly soft skills. Ugh, I hate that term, but that's what this is.

Back-to-back meetings are a LOT. They can build towards burnout. Yes, you need boundaries and ways to recharge. You may also need to build resiliency for meetings.

I have no problem saying "Your ChatGPT prompt sucked" or "Ask Claude to write that again but include XYZ" compared to the more nurturing approach I'd take if someone wrote the output themselves.

2016 is trending. As you dust off your old playlist, dust off something else too: Your 2016 PR playbook.

Everyone's getting nostalgic for what they remember as a simpler time (we can debate that always, I mean, this is the internet). Meanwhile, those of us who've been doing PR long enough just found our old strategies in the back of the closet. Plot twist: they still fit, and they're back in style.

Why? Of course, it's AI.

We spent a decade optimizing PR for Google: backlinks, domain authority, tier 1 publications. But AI doesn't care about that.

Here's what's working now:
Press wire services. AI scrapes them all. That distribution you thought was outdated? It's feeding LLMs.
Brand mentions > backlinks. AI trains on text, not links. Getting your company name mentioned without a link back? That used to be a failure. Now it's AI visibility.
Volume across publications. Research shows it takes as few as 250 documents to influence AI training data. Let your PR bring that breadth of coverage.
Even sketchy sites matter... for now. I'm not saying pay for garbage coverage. But those sites gaming Google? They're also feeding AI training data.

You need two PR tracks now:
Traditional PR for humans (quality, links, top-tier pubs)
AI visibility PR (volume, mentions, wire services, cast a wider net)
