Since graduating U of Chicago B-School in ‘81, I founded and operated over 25 businesses. I sold many of them successfully including an IPO. One of the most important things I learned was how to maximize proceeds when selling a company. For many companies, the best way for an owner to monetize their life's work is via ESOP (Employee Stock Ownership Plan). With an ESOP, owners sell a part of their company to employees (employees don't pay anything), company taxes go to zero, owners get liquid, can defer or avoid taxes too. Owners maintain control of the business. When owners sell to another company, they usually pay a large tax bill and lose operational control. NOT true with an ESOP. Sellers may be experts at growing their business. But that is not the expertise needed to sell a business for maximum proceeds. Career highlights – In 1994, I co-founded TeamAlliance Technology Partners, a technology placement firm that grew from seed capital to an acquisition and IPO within just 33 months. As Chief Operating Officer, I managed 300 employees and operations in 30 offices. In 1997, I co-founded Greenwich Venture Partners to invest capital in start-up technology companies. We managed companies from inception to profitability and sale. In 2001, I founded and operated American Asthma & Diabetes Pharmacy, specializing in asthma / diabetes drugs & accessories for Medicare patients. We grew to 3,000+ patients and sold to a larger entity. In 2003, I invested in and operated GulfStreamGear.com, a marine apparel & sign company. Under my direct management we became the premier company in the US offering signage and apparel to the marine industry & sold it in 2 years. In 2009, I created the Meditation Pro Series that taught 250,000 people (and counting) how to meditate for conditions that affect Western civilization (e.g., stress). In 2009, I founded & currently manage North American Resellers LLC, a financial management company for IT companies operating in the Ukraine and Europe. In 2011, I became the CEO of Lizzy James Designs, a jewelry manufacturer founded by my wife Elizabeth. Our products are sold in hundreds of retailers worldwide. I cofounded, with my business partner and dear friend of 30 years, Exit Strategy Mastery. We maximize the personal wealth of business owners when they sell their life’s work. I am a certified instructor in Karate, Yoga, & Tai Chi. I'm an avid rock climber. Most importantly, I love training our dogs in agility & obedience.
