The Northwest Indiana Influential Women Association (NWIIWA) hosted their annual Influential Women of Northwest Indiana Awards Banquet, with more than 1,000 attendees gathered to celebrate the women in our community making an impact.

Last year, I was honored to receive the award for Most Influential Woman of Northwest Indiana in Construction & Manufacturing. This year, I was humbled to be inducted into the Alumni Circle—joining a powerful legacy of women leaders driving change in their industries and communities.

I didn’t expect recycled soap and AI governance to show up in the same event—but that’s the beauty of the Project Management Institute.

The 15th Annual PM Symposium hosted by the PMI Chicagoland Chapter  brought together diverse stories, strategies, and frameworks that showcased the full spectrum of what we do as project leaders.

The keynote from Derreck Kayongo was nothing short of incredible. 

Derreck built a sustainable business recycling hotel soap—yes, soap!—turning waste into life-saving hygiene products for communities in need, while also employing at-risk individuals in the process. 

It wasn’t just an inspiring story—
It was a powerful example of how empathy, innovation, and business strategy can intersect to create lasting impact.

I had the privilege of meeting him briefly after his presentation to unpack some of his strategy, and he is a brilliant entrepreneur.

I was also introduced to several new frameworks for managing AI implementations. Some I’ve unknowingly used before but having them clearly organized as models is extremely helpful—especially for bringing teams along during automation and transformation initiatives. 

Shoutout to Michael Hyzy for sharing his phased approach to AI delivery—practical and well delivered.

As always, the best part of PMI events is the community. I reconnected with a few familiar faces and met new ones too. You never know who you’ll learn from over lunch or in a hallway.

Mastering the Puzzle of Change

"AI potential is high, but readiness is low."

This theme echoed throughout the Snowflake World Tour conference—and it couldn’t be more accurate.

I attended the event alongside over 1,700 data scientists, developers, executive leaders, and tech startups. The energy around AI's potential was evident, yet a critical truth resonated: 

➡️ AI readiness is low because data is abundant but often siloed and of low quality.

My key takeaway?

A robust data strategy isn't just important—it’s the prerequisite for any successful AI strategy.

Despite advancements in AI platforms, many organizations—especially in manufacturing, logistics, and healthcare—are still grappling with:

↳ Siloed data
↳ Legacy systems
↳ Undefined data strategies

Here’s the truth → AI strategy is a follower of data strategy.

That said, bridging the gap between strategy and execution is possible. One of the key discussions focused on pilots and iterative approaches that help teams test, learn, and resolve challenges before committing to a larger rollout.

The conference also showcased many tangible use cases that demonstrated how to bridge this gap and unlock AI's potential. 

The Openflow feature and Snowflake Marketplace, offering AI-ready data products and agents, are pivotal advancements for integrating diverse data sources and accelerating AI adoption across sectors like manufacturing, healthcare, and logistics.

Some specific use cases that were shared:

✅ Manufacturing: 
Using AI agents for manufacturing inspections, predictive asset failure analysis, and natural language-driven self-service analytics for inventory management.

✅ Healthcare/Insurance/Business: 
Extracting key themes from lengthy documents (like 10-Ks or medical records) to identify emerging health trends and forecast market direction.

✅ Logistics/Customer Service: 
Automating manual tagging by extracting image metadata, classifying broken products from customer photos for faster replacements, and transcribing/summarizing support calls to analyze sentiment.

Most leaders feel like they don’t have time to develop their people—because they’re just trying to survive the week.

Bearing the weight of direction, delivery, and decisions can be overwhelming.

And when that happens—you stay the bottleneck.

That was me—until I discovered Shu Ha Ri (守破離), a practical framework that finally gave structure to how I teach, coach, and hand off ownership.

Shu Ha Ri is a Japanese framework that guides skill development from learning to adapting to innovating. It’s widely used in mentorship, leadership, agile coaching, and martial arts.

Here’s how it works in practice:

✅ SHU – Follow the Rules

The mentee builds foundational skill by following processes exactly. 

You lead, they observe.

✅ HA – Adapt the Rules

They begin to experiment and adapt, within the framework.

You shift into a coaching role.

✅ RI – Be the Rules

They take full ownership—teaching, improving, and innovating beyond the original process. 

You step back and advise only when needed.

This structure gives you and your mentee a shared language for development—and a way to stay accountable through every stage.

If your team isn’t pausing to learn, it’s repeating old mistakes.

High-performing teams don’t just execute—they pause, reflect, and adjust.

And one of the simplest ways to build that habit?
A short, structured team reflection.

They’re called retrospectives—and when done well, they lead to:

✅ Psychological Safety – People feel safe to speak up
✅ Organizational Learning – Teams retain and apply lessons
✅ Engagement & Ownership – Promotes accountability and shared success

To get these outcomes, you need more than good intentions.

Here’s how to run an effective retrospective:

↳ Start with a simple structure.

↳ Keep your retrospectives predictable to invite engagement.

↳ Use this 4-question agenda:

1. What went well?
2. What didn’t go well?
3. What do we need to change or keep doing?
4. What actions do we need to take?

Once your foundation is in place, here are four best practices to make your retrospectives more effective:

Best Practice #1 – Create Psychological Safety

↳ Open with intent: “We’re here to learn. This is a safe space and there’s no judgment.”

↳ Thank people for their input—even if you disagree

↳ Make it a closed meeting with only the execution team

↳ Use sticky notes or digital whiteboards to gather input

↳ Timebox each agenda item

↳ Ask: “Is there anything here we should explore further?”


Best Practice #2 – Ask Great Questions

Great retros are driven by great questions.

↳ Avoid yes/no questions—explore context and nuance.

Use open-ended prompts like:
• “Can you share an example?”
• “What made that challenging?”
• “What is the action?”


Best Practice #3 – The Leader’s Role in a Retrospective

Leaders set the tone—intentionally or Use active listening

↳ Hold back opinions until others share

↳ Thank input, don’t evaluate it

↳ Coach leaders ahead of time: “You’ll be prompted to respond at the end.”

↳ Encourage reflection, not resolution


Best Practice #4 – Commit to Action

↳ Choose one improvement to implement next sprint

↳ Assign ownership and next steps

↳ Report back: “Here’s what we changed because of your feedback.”

Retrospectives build trust, encourage ongoing feedback, and enable small, consistent improvements over time.

When teams learn together, they grow together.

Where my witches at? 🧙‍♀️

I spent the evening at Witches Night Out in Joliet, IL with friends and former colleagues from my days in the nuclear industry — where women were few, but we always supported one another. Last night was no different — just another way we came together to help lift other women up.

Funds raised go to organizations that support women, children, and families facing some of life’s hardest challenges.

The magic? It’s in the mission. 

Here are just a few of the recipient agencies benefiting from this event:

🧡 CASA of River Valley – Advocating in the court system to secure safe, stable futures for children who have experienced abuse and neglect.

 🛏 Guardian Angel Community Services – Providing safety, shelter, and support for survivors of domestic violence.

 🐎 Ready Set Ride Therapeutic Recreation Facility – Offering therapeutic horseback riding for children with disabilities and terminal illness.

 🌱 Stepping Stones Treatment Center – Providing recovery services that empower women to overcome addiction.

 🌎 Wilmington Coalition for a Healthy Community – Founded in response to the opioid crisis, building a stronger future through prevention and partnership.

 🏠 Will County Habitat for Humanity – Partnering with families and volunteers to build or improve homes.

 🤝 Big Brothers Big Sisters of Will and Grundy Counties – Mentoring young minds to help them reach their full potential.
