Chipper Cash is a venture-capital-backed Financial technology company headquartered in the United States (US) and builds software to enable free and instant Peer-to-peer Cross-border payments in Africa and Europe. 

As the Growth Marketing Manager, I report to the VP of Growth & Marketing and I'm responsible for driving growth in Uganda and successfully executing and measuring marketing campaigns across a number of channels, including but not limited to Influencers, PR, Incentives, Brand Awareness, and live events.

I collaborate with partners, including product, engineering, compliance, and operations teams, to develop strategies and plans in support of Chipper's marketing and business goals in Uganda.

I specifically take lead on:

Coming up with good ideas for how to introduce Chipper to different segments of the Uganda market, including remittance senders, creatives, business owners, side hustlers, and families. Recruiting, closing, and coaching influencers to create native content that drives massive results. Leading marketing campaigns from idea to reporting across the acquisition, activation, and retention funnel.
Developing and executing local CSR initiatives to drive brand goodwill in the local community.

Managing multiple social media campaigns from organic posting to boosted campaigns, working with internal designers and agencies to produce original content that drives engagement and reach.
Developing campaign briefs that include detailed KPIs, budgets, and expected results.
Reporting on campaigns, extracting key learnings, and setting actionable plans for improvement.

Ensuring development of campaigns and testing initiatives meet planned deadlines for delivery.

Thoroughly QA campaigns for accuracy including design, copy, audience selections, tracking URLs, and offer details. Delivering proofs to the team for review and sign-off.

Running tests of different ideas and executions to find the best-performing assets.

Growth Marketing Manager

Bolt

I led geographical expansion from 1 city to adding 2 new cities with a consistent national MoM growth of XX%.

I optimized for efficiency - moved P n L net rate from negative XXX% to positive XX%. Grew country EBIDTA by over 60% MoM. 

I worked directly on growth marketing and lifecycle marketing initiatives which not only improved our retention but also grew our new user based. Grew to second place in IOS downloads.

I steered regulatory conversation with an active contribution for the ride-hailing sector towards the traffic and road safety act 1998 (Amendment Act 2020)

Interim Country Manager

As the focal person for market-centric decisions, I coordinated local, regional and global teams for the success of the Uganda market. I coordinated the other company units (marketing, regulation & policy, product team, campaigns team) to give market-based input to lead to the desired success rate of Bolt in Uganda. 

I had full ownership of Bolt Uganda P & L, I monitored the budget alongside desired performance to ensure that we achieve the desired sustainability level.  I played a key role towards product development and product improvement to see to it that our product matches the market needs. 

I challenged myself while challenging the team I lead to achieve Bolt's desired deliverables within Uganda.

In this role, I supported and took ownership of all Bolt business operations in Uganda. I did this by creating and optimising functional processes. My focus included but was not limited to, transforming thousands of leads into active drivers every month, onboarding hundreds of new drivers daily by ensuring smooth and effective training sessions, analyzing data to monitor quality and utilization metrics for both users and drivers. I furthermore developed and executed strategies to keep the churn rate at the bare minimum. I took lead in structuring and reviewing outgoing communication with all our partners.

As an Operations Specialist, I challenged myself in every aspect to see to it that Bolt achieves the desired deliverables within Uganda. 

By overseeing a brand ambassador program of 350 people, I led a growth in activation by 300%+ with slightly over 300 partners activated a day.

BDE Consults is a private company with expertise in providing ICT Research, Project management, training, and Events. BDE's special focus is on supporting the growth and development of small and medium enterprises (SMEs), through the use of Information and Communications Technologies

At BDE Consults, my role entailed ensuring that BDE has a constant flow of consulting work by sourcing opportunities on the market that are in line with BDE vision and mission. I recorded several onboarded projects. With this, I was able to record 80% growth in the number of new opportunities for the company with a huge ROI! I oversaw the smooth operation of marketing, finance, and administration. I did this by leading a team of 4 bright individuals to achieve the operational objectives of the company. My role further involved being the company representative in the public eye and with the company's strategic partners at different stakeholder engagement meetings. Reporting directly to the company CEO, I took the lead in drafting all the company's strategic documents. I was in charge of managing and sourcing both B2B and B2C opportunities.

I took lead of procurement processes and owned the company’s supply chain management scope. My role further involved formulation of a sales management plan and risk management plan for process improvement.

Malaria Consortium Uganda is committed to reducing the burden of malaria and other communicable diseases – particularly those that affect young children such as pneumonia and diarrhea. Malaria consortium operates in Africa and Asia

My short contractual time at Malaria consortium involved coordinating effective management and timely implementation of monitoring activities to track program performance in line with the Theory of Change and the M&E plan. I participated in the development, pilot, and validation of quantitative and qualitative monitoring tools as well as design the corresponding data collection procedures. 

I further had the task to Identify needs for M&E technology applications strengthening innovations oriented M&E systems. I worked on the development of data dashboards, participated in data cleaning, and eventually interpretation and presentation of this data as the Data Analyst

MUGESOFT Tech Institute

MUGESOFT Tech Institute is a Ugandan based computer training and support centre that has an aim of supporting rural youth to acquire ICT based competencies. 

During my time at MUGESOFT, I was in charge of writing a syllabus and conducting training in courses which included, systems analysis and design, introduction to database management systems and Network Application development. I also took lead in offering refresher training courses to organisation as this was part MUGESOFT's mandate. 

As the Chief Information Officer, I was responsible for all information technology and computer systems. Leading a team of 12, I acted as the bridge between the IT department and the rest of the organization. My work further involved hiring and managing of a competent team. I was time to timed tasked by the CEO to formulate problem solving strategies of key intervations.

As a product manager, I had the mandate for requirements engineering and the entire product management lifecycle.

Bank of Uganda

The Bank of Uganda is the central bank of Uganda. Established in 1966, by Act of Parliament, the bank is wholly owned by the government. 

I was among the few privileged to carry out my internship at the central bank. During this time I carried out research on the bank’s current project management system from this I came up with proposal for a new and better bank’s project management system. I executed this task by collecting requirements for the proposed system from the respective stakeholders, carrying out thorough UML based system design for the proposed project management system at Bank of Uganda and presenting my findings to bank the development team. 

I in addition offered customer care (IT help desk) and maintenance around the bank.

Infectious Disease Research Institute

The Infectious Diseases Institute, established within Makerere University, is a Ugandan not-for-profit organization that aims to strengthen health systems in Africa, with a strong emphasis on infectious diseases; through research and capacity development. 

My role was working at a locally based health center to input project clinical data using a pre-defined processing system, provide clerical and data management assistance as requested by the Project Manager or the Data Manager, reviewing data for accuracy and completeness, follow up with abscorned patients and document of the feedback most especially on the status of the patients followed up in these sites. I took lead on Quality Management by ensuring that relevant data is collected and normalized. I formulated Performance Management procedures to be used Human Resources (HR) wings for efficient data teams and stable Teamwork during data collection.

Mildcare is a Primary Education based in a Kampala suburb.  

This was the first job that I did during my High School break. This role involved handling, planning and managing computer lessons at the school, managing termly report processing, managing student records and offering any other IT related troubleshooting.

I am a Sanguine-Choleric Ugandan born with the whole world as my home. I am passionate about helping people and making the world a better place. I am driven by the notion of "being better and making others better".

My background is ICT but that is not my limitation. With a Bachelor's Degree in Software Engineering and other professional ICT training, I have amassed knowledge that makes me a competent ICT-based Project Manager or an Operations lead and Manager for ICT based start-ups and companies.In the past, I have launched and scaled start-ups within Uganda and the region through defining winning strategies and overseeing efficient operations. I have experience in requirements engineering, systems analysis, design, and modeling.

My desire to make data-driven decisions for interventions made me gather interest in the area of Monitoring and Evaluation biasing myself to ICT for intervention/program monitoring and evaluation as my area of research while pursuing my Master's Degree training in M & E. I am a student in data analysis and analytics. I love leading and working with teams to come up with operational and effective strategies for efficiency and effectiveness. I am particularly keen on business analysis, operations management, and strategy formulation.

Since I got laid off in December, I’ve had countless interviews. It’s only a matter of time that my desired opportunity will land. 🥰

I’ve spent several hours preparing for interviews, and I have read and recounted my responses before a mirror and my wife. From using the ‘STAR’ model to other approaches to eloquently articulate my achievements. 

And yet, ‘not so obvious’ interview questions have always caught me off-guard. 

At one point after seemingly answering all technical questions well, the hiring Manager asked me the answer to 17 * 28. I fumbled and gave the wrong answer. I froze to even press CMD + SPC Bar on my keyboard. Now I know that the question desired to understand how best I employ tools at hand for solutions especially under pressure. I didn’t need to rely on my head. 

Kyle Thomas has an interesting story on what he did when the Hiring Manager asked him ‘to teach him something new.’ Well, he got the job at Uber 😅

❔What do you like to do outside of work? - This question can reveal more about your personality, interests, and hobbies, which can help the interviewer assess whether you would be a good fit for the team.

❔Can you explain a complex concept in simple terms? - This question assesses your ability to communicate effectively, which is a critical skill in most jobs.

❔What is the most difficult decision you have ever had to make? - This question is designed to assess your problem-solving and decision-making skills.

❔Tell me about a time when you had to work with someone you didn't get along with. - Employers want to know if you can work collaboratively with people who have different personalities and work styles.

The day I drove my dream car…

If you are a car person like me, there are probably cars you’ve looked at or look at and get uncomfortable. The temptation to give it a second look is irresistible. That’s me when it comes to the Toyota Landcruiser 2022 V8 or VX series. 
I have a confession to make, I have read about this car that if I told you about it, you could be convinced I own like 2 of them. Truth is, hadn’t even come close to one until most recently, follow along the story. 🙈

It's a rainy morning, I’m dashing out to drop my wife and kids. A few meters past the gate and almost connecting to the road, I notice a car parked in the road, obviously alarming because it’s blocking the road. A minute later, a lady walks to my window seemingly troubled. “Thank God you are a man, the road is bad and I’m afraid of going onwards;  could you kindly help reverse my car backward and I use the long road.”
Now the road from our home that connects to the main road is not so pleasant, hey hey, don’t judge where we stay, we have one thing in common, we all sleep at night. 😅

Back to the story, I look at the lady, look at the car, and in my head, I’m convinced she can go up and doesn’t need to reverse, neither do I need to drive her car. Obviously, you know the car in context so I’m afraid. I mean, what if the car ‘flies’ while I drive? The lady is not about to give in to my pep talk of ‘You can do it’. To save time, I need to drive her car. The only difference is, in my heart of hearts, I am not reversing her car but going forward. I mean if my car can pass at the place she’s afraid of, how about hers?

Loo and behold, I drive the car past the 'scary place', and frankly like I had imagined the car didn't feel a thing. 

Let's break the story and shoot to the moral of it!

Having potential is great but not all. It's going to take so much more. 

Begins with belief and awareness. Birds and hens are both created to fly, the difference birds actually believe they can fly right from infantry while hens believe they can only walk best and fly only when in danger. Are you aware of your potential, do you believe in your potential?

Potential tested is potential trusted. It's not enough to know what you are capable of, you need to trust your potential. This can only happen if you stretch your limits to points that allow you to know what you can do. It's for this reason that hard times are gold, they get us to know and believe that we can do things we didn't know or think we would. 

Potential goes with exposure. Have you seen people probably less qualified but with more exposure thriving in the workplace, yes? This is because it's not enough to have a strong car, you need to know the road. You need to have gone through the road to know that you can. So hey, give your potential the exposure it needs by doing things that stretch you. 

That's how I drove my dream car, for a minute!

I was neither a fan of Google Sheets nor excel. When I was young and was first introduced to computers, looking at the 'cells' alone caused my blood to flow fast. I thought this was cut out for a specific type of people, a special breed. Not even getting a 4-year degree in Software Engineering helped with my fear. 

However, when I began my career, I knew I couldn't run forever. I forced myself to learn the 'cells'. Spend hours taking courses on Google sheets and understanding a number of functions. 

For starters, I thought it was all about knowing a million formulas, but later I realized that it was all about knowing how to use the few formulas I knew. One formula being used in several ways. 

I now take pride in analyzing data and building dashboards with Google sheets, don't be deceived, I'm not a data scientist, those guys are way smarter. 😅

You’ve been making this mistake during your public speeches, presentations, or interviews. 

It's messing things up for your speaking and you don’t know it. 

Stop taking questions or comments as the last thing in your speech! 

What? For real? Yes... I said it! 

You have given the best introduction and give ahead to elaborate your points. You have us hooked as you speak and then, you dilute our ‘take-homes’ by calling for questions and comments at the end. All we shall ever remember after we leave are those questions asked or the funny comments made. A good speech doesn’t only give a great first impression; it leaves a lasting impression, you can’t do that if questions and comments are the lasting impressions. 

This doesn’t mean you don’t take questions at all… Take questions and comments, but, be sure to spare some minutes to come back to wrap up your speech with a strong conclusion. 

Make your conclusion solid enough that it will wash away the memory of questions and comments from the mind of your audience. 

The goal of any speaker is to get your audience hooked at the beginning of the speech and to leave them hooked by the end of the speech.

Lead the woman way…

I’ve been privileged to work with a number of star women. Topping this list is my wife! Not sure if you expected otherwise. 🥰

Most of these women have attributes that make them exceptional leaders, I’ll admit, most of us men do struggle to have these, and yet they are needed for any leader. 

☑️ Empathy - Empathy is a key trait for effective leadership. Women are often naturally more empathetic than men, this helps them connect with their team members and understand their needs and concerns.
 
☑️ Collaboration - Collaboration is another important trait for effective leadership. Women are often skilled at building relationships and fostering teamwork, this is valuable in any leadership role.
 
☑️ Resilience - Resilience is crucial for leaders, who must be able to weather setbacks and overcome obstacles. Women are often more resilient than men in the face of many challenges. Giving up doesn’t come as easy to them.
 
☑️ Vulnerability – Good leaders must be vulnerable to the people they lead. Unlike to us men, women are always open to being vulnerable, this in most cases is misinterpreted as a weakness but it’s rather a strength aspect.
 
☑️ Humility - Humility is a valuable trait for leaders, who must be able to admit their mistakes and learn from them. Women are often more willing to acknowledge their shortcomings and seek feedback from others. To women, leadership is not necessarily about power.
 
☑️ Authenticity - Authenticity is important for building trust with team members and stakeholders. Women are often more comfortable showing vulnerability and expressing their emotions, which can help them build authentic connections with others.
 
☑️ Communication - Communication is a fundamental skill for any leader. Women are often skilled communicators, both verbally and nonverbally, which can help them convey their vision and goals to their team. This often time stems from their key attention to detail.
 
☑️ Emotional Intelligence - Emotional intelligence is the ability to recognize and manage one's own emotions, as well as the emotions of others. Women are often more emotionally intelligent than men, which can help them navigate interpersonal dynamics and build strong relationships.
 
☑️ Integrity - Integrity is a fundamental trait for any leader. Women are often seen as more trustworthy than men, which can help them build credibility with their team and stakeholders.
 
Society needs women, society needs to learn from women.
