Nicoya stands out as a prominent biotechnology company, specializing in the development of cutting-edge platforms for drug development and virus detection.

In my role as an R&D engineer, I focused on the continuous improvement of drug discovery and virus diagnostic products, incorporating valuable customer feedback. I actively collaborated with various internal and external stakeholders, establishing strategic alliances to address critical technical issues and effectively managing the product lifecycle from concept to commercialization.

Beyond my technical responsibilities, I took on mentorship roles, guiding junior engineers and staff members. Additionally, I organized social events to foster friendly professional relationships among peers.

Engineer II/Mechanical Engineer/R&D Engineer

As an R&D engineer, I spearheaded strategic plans for launching minimal viable products. I developed comprehensive product requirements for the MVP launch, considering stakeholders’ needs. This involved utilizing both formal and informal customer feedback to understand user experience and refine product requirements.

I collaborated with multiple stakeholders to incorporate feedback, continuously improving products and services; routinely communicated updates to ensure everyone stayed informed.

I executed project management using agile methods, including daily sprints, weekly meetings, and seamless coordination among teams. Additionally, I played a role in training engineers and staff, organizing educational events to enhance overall team capabilities.

As a Research Assistant, I established the fundamental infrastructure necessary for developing a point-of-care microfluidic platform for detecting viruses within an academic laboratory. Spearheaded a collaborative ecosystem to commercialize affordable, point-of-care diagnostic platforms. In addition, I spearheaded a peer-reviewed research article.

As a teaching assistant, I had the wonderful opportunity to teach brilliant students engineering practice, solid mechanics for designing machines, fluid mechanics, and microdevice fabrication.

Teaching Assistant

As a Research Assistant, I developed a personalized medicine platform for screening chemotherapeutic drugs for blood cancer patients. My role encompassed the design, fabrication and testing of the device and devising an associated assay. Also, I collaborated with clinicians to validate the device with clinical samples. 

Throughout the course of the initiative, I cultivated collaborative partnerships with academic research labs and clinicians, concurrently engaging in collaborative efforts with other research labs to augment the depth and breadth of research endeavors.

In my capacity as a researcher, I pioneered the development of a point-of-care, simplistic, and precise water quality monitoring platform tailored for the detection of heavy metals in potable water. This multidisciplinary research undertaking harnessed the synergies of nanotechnology, microfabrication, and mechanical engineering. My engagement in this project afforded me a distinctive opportunity to collaborate with interdisciplinary researchers, contributing significantly to the establishment of lab infrastructure while overseeing coordination with vendors.

Furthermore, my involvement extended to fostering collaboration between the academic research laboratory and industry, facilitating the process of commercializing point-of-care diagnostic platforms. This venture represented a strategic amalgamation of scientific innovation with practical application, underscoring the dual commitment to advancing knowledge and translating research outcomes into tangible solutions for societal benefit.

Furthermore, I loved the opportunity to organize career events and social events to foster relationship building.

As a teaching assistant, I had the wonderful opportunity to teach brilliant engineering students fluid mechanics and heat transfer, solid mechanics for designing machines, and microdevice fabrication.

Center for Advisory and Testing Services (CATS-MIST)

In my capacity as an employee, I instructed several civil engineering courses to highly capable undergraduate students, providing mentorship to guide them through the trajectory of their future careers. Additionally, I orchestrated numerous networking sessions for both students and faculty members, along with the coordination of social events and professional training sessions.

Integral to my responsibilities was the coordination with diverse stakeholders, entailing conflict resolution and the formulation of innovative solutions to address critical administrative challenges. This was particularly pertinent in the successful execution of multiple events aimed at assisting the organization in revenue generation.

Teaching Faculty/Civil Engineering Consultant

My passion for science led me to study engineering. The best way to impact people's lives with the help of science is to build products and services that meet their various needs in everyday life. As I delved deeper into such applications, I discovered the way people engage with services and products, and how science addresses their needs is captivating. During my engineering journey, I realized my knack for analyzing problems at their roots and innovating solutions. Combining this with my skills, I enjoy designing platforms that enhance people's lives.
