How should you respond when someone says you made a mistake in taking the job?



Yesterday, I had an odd encounter. 

At the epic CEU event (it was great!), someone told me they think I made a mistake by taking this position. 

“It’s such a saturated market” they said. 



My response was “Every category in this industry can be viewed as saturated. Yes, there are plenty of other companies. But everyone has competitors, and everyone has a chance to do business.”



I’m not going to say “There’s no such thing as competition”. 

I think that’s just rephrasing the fact that you don’t need to be scared of competition. 



 But I won’t go to the other extreme either. 

I won’t look at the large number of therapy companies and stop building up this business. 

Competitors are a sign that there is business to be had. 

All of us will be alright:)

I’ve been talking to a lot of people. 

Operators
Therapists
Administrators 
Directors of Rehab



I’ve been trying to learn as much as I can about Healthcare and about rehab therapy. 

And the bottom line is:



Good people make good companies. 



There’s no way around it.

So it seems people outside the healthcare industry don’t really know what my company does. 

I get it. 

Up until a month ago, it was the same for me. 

So here’s a basic explanation. 



Every Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF, commonly referred to as Nursing Homes) , has a rehab department. 

Whether residents are short-term or need long term care, they likely need some rehabilitative therapy throughout their stay. 

This includes Physical Therapy (PT), Occupational Therapy (OT), and Speech-Language Pathology (SLP).



Every facility has this. 

Some of them do it all on their own. 

But others outsource it. 



And that’s where we come in. 

We take care of the entire department. 

Staffing, payroll, the actual therapy, etc. 

It’s in our hands. 



Other facilities keep it in-house, but they bring in a consultant to help them optimize the department’s operations. 

We do that too. 



For anything rehab therapy related, we’re there for the SNF.

I was wrong. 

I spent years saying that audiobooks are not for me. 

In my life, I’ve always been able to focus more when reading than listening. 

I learn and retain information better via reading it, rather than listening to it. 



So I always assumed that audiobooks would be the same. 

Reading would be the way I absorb books. 

Listening simply wasn’t for me. 



But I was completely wrong. 

I tried an audiobook a couple weeks ago. 

2.5 books later…and I’m hooked. 



I drive more now than I’ve ever done before, so it’s a perfect fit. 

I can keep my driving time productive when I don’t have any calls to make. 

Even if it’s not a “productive” book, I find it to be great for my mind regardless. 



I was wrong about audiobooks.

Sometimes I feel like an Offensive Lineman.

Here’s why:



SNF therapy is like Offensive Linemen in the NFL. 

In the NFL, Offensive Linemen play a unique role. 

They’re the only position that wants to be under the radar.



When you don’t hear about them, that means they’re doing a good job. 

When you hear their names, that generally means they messed up. 



Therapy is similar in Skilled Nursing Facilities. 

Everyone wants therapy to do their jobs. 

They want all the therapy to be done productively and uneventfully. 

If something comes up with therapy, it’s often a concern. 



That being said, Offensive Linemen are still highly compensated. 

Often, a free agent will sign a huge contract and many fans are not even familiar with who he is. 

There’s a great value to being so good that you go unnoticed. 



The best O-Linemen do their job without fanfare. 

The best therapy departments do the same.
