When so many of your LinkedIn friends have got together to talk about your favourite topic and you can’t join them, what do you do?
 
You hold your own mini event on the other side of world. 
 
Moumita Das Roy and I have been connections on LinkedIn for several years. She found me through Kevin D. Turner, it transpires. More recently we have become friends-who-haven’t-yet-met. 
 
Over the time we’ve known each other we’ve collaborated on events and posts and supported each other in our LinkedIn work. Moumita’s area of expertise on LinkedIn is diversity, inclusion and the challenges faced by migrants. 
 
But we’ve never met. We live at opposite ends of New Zealand. 
 
A fortnight ago, Moumita went to Sydney to present at an event (she’s a skilled speaker) and met some of my other LinkedIn friends including Michelle J Raymond and Roy Kowarski. 
 
Still, she and I hadn’t met. 
 
But last night, just as our northern hemisphere colleagues were filing into a venue in Birmingham for UpLift Live, we finally did meet. And we did what they would be doing – talked about LinkedIn.
 
(Still it doesn’t seem I was entirely forgotten by my overseas colleagues – I made it onto one of Gillian Whitney‘s slides, as you can see from this photo kindly sent me by Mark Williams.)
 
Moumita and I talked LinkedIn nonstop: 
🔷 What we thought about the trend of people calling themselves a LinkedIn Top Voice (blue badge) when they’re really just contributing to Collaborative articles (yellow badge). 
🔷 How a new generation of LinkedIn practitioners is doing LinkedIn differently. 
🔷 Whether profile verification is worth the risk. 
🔷 How the Projects section of profiles (my current hobbyhorse) could be used to showcase the extra-curricular pro bono work Moumita does.
🔷 The value or otherwise of hashtags.
🔷 And so on. 
 
We may not have been able to attend Uplift Live in person, but we were there for our friends and colleagues in spirit and talking about them in practice.

And I got to spend time with someone I'd long been wanting to meet - who turns out to be as lovely in person as she is on LinkedIn. Truly authentic!

A great day yesterday cheering, supporting and helping build the pipeline for the future at the Women in Trades NZ event in Tāmaki Makaurau.

Young girls looking to choose their future careers came and spoke to us at the DuluxGroup stand, creating a table full of art, having loads of fun in the process.

We helped the girls with our range of Dulux Colours of New Zealand, Porter’s Paints, and stains from the Dryden range.

Together we can do this with the men supporting the women to succeed in trades too ✊🏽

Here I am facilitating a panel of on setting up DEI teams for success in Aotearoa on Friday at the Diversity Works New Zealand Workplace Inclusion Conference in Wellington.  It was great to have the panelist expertise of Susan Doughty Louise Cowpertwait (Dr) and Moumita Das Roy to encourage us all.  I am all about the practical, so it was great to round up the wonderful sessions of the last 3 days and talk about the steps we can take to get traction for DEI initiativies.   And there were some great questions from the audience which kept the conversation bubbling along. Some takeaways were
- a DEI strategy with ELT backing
- developing a specific comms plan for DEI that is tailored to each layer of the organisation
- professional supervision for DEI leaders
- connection and community for DEI managers and leaders

My first ever meeting with the PWWA Board Members, facilitating a Communications Strategy workshop with twelve CEOs and GMs from countries across the Pacific.

Last month I was in Sydney running a brainstorming session to create the 2024-2025 communications strategy for Pacific Water and Wastewater Association (PWWA).


As the peak body for the Pacific water sector, PWWA’s mission is to strengthen advocacy, collaboration and capacity building for sustainable and resilient water and sanitation among the Pacific Island nations.


Thanks to the PWWA Secretariat and the Board for actively participating in this co-creation exercise with me, to build the strategy and the communications programme for the future.


PWWA stands for sustainable water and sanitation for Pasifika. Because collectively we can ✊🏽

I have a tendency to shake my fists a LOT.  I think anyone working in/ concerned about sustainability can probably relate! But last week, I found myself doing a good old-fashioned Wendy Petrie fist-pump instead (gif for those of you unfamiliar with this *iconic* reference)
 
I was invited by Marketers in Construction to be a panelist at their event discussing everything from #greeninnovation to #greenwashing, #sustainableprocurement to #environmentalcertifications
 
So why the theatrical hand/ arm gestures?
 
📣  I 100% believe #storytelling can change the world, so being in a room of marketers (who at their core, are storytellers) wanting to improve their sustainability knowledge and figure out how to communicate their organisation’s credentials accurately, was bloody exciting tbh.
