How can startups work with corporates and how can corporates embrace the entrepreneur spirit?

1 - Only look to engage with startups if you have a validated problem statement 
2 - Look internal first, then, if you cannot 'build' the capability internally look at what startups are fixing this problem already or something similar
3 - If you are a startup, back yourself. Big doesnt mean better. Speak with confidence and communicate your value prop through low noise channels

The best advice I have received that helped me make the move from corporate to entrepreneurship was:

'Dont take advice from people who arent living the life you want'

The difficult bit of this is that many friends, family and work colleagues fall into that category

If you have a dream (thanks Simon Squibb) I would argue that you have a duty to bring it out and share it with the world

Staying small and shrinking to others vision of what you 'should' do doesnt serve you or those that need you to inspire them

Start, start small, start messy, just start...

Being yourself is scary...

Now I am not saying we should all say what we want and do what we think all the time, that would be chaos

But living a life true to yourself, where you are actually saying things you believe and value, is something you cant put a price on

Most of my career was wearing a mask, corporate values, what my boss thought, what my client wanted to hear...mostly bullsh*t 

And that doesnt change overnight. Since venturing into entrepreneurship and pursing what I am passionate about I am still reminding myself and unlearning 20+ years of compliance

This weekend I was honored to be invited to share my thoughts, unfiltered, raw and personal. I was nervous, but I was also soon at ease as I spoke from the heart and people could hear it in my voice and see it in my body language 

We all have our own music to share. I encourage you to be brave and be more of yourself. You will not regret it

Start small, like a polite 'no thank you' or 'I think this...' when your natural reaction is to go with the flow

You are unique, no one will ever be a better version of you. Share your true self despite the nerves and let your light shine 💓

Build or buy?

A question I have asked many a CEO over the years when discussing strategy

Should you build internal capability and capacity to gain competitive advantage...or buy a business that is already doing it?

It was great to share the stage and discuss this and other topics at the summit for Malaysian Business Angel Network (MBAN) 

Top three tips when corporates are considering buying/partnering with startups:

1 - If you are the corporate you cannot put same KPIs and rules on a startup that you use to run BAU, you need hybird model and light touch governance
2 - The reality is that the startup will need to adjust their culture more than the corporate - set this expectation at the start
3 - Only integrate the parts you need to in order to deliver synergies, everything else leave it alone. Rule of thumb is 80% of the op model

We cannot expect new results if we keep looking at life through the same lens

To achieve something greater, we need new perspectives

Science calls this cognitive reappraisal, reframing how we see a situation

I read  a research study from the University of London found that people who practiced it solved 20 percent more complex problems than those who stayed fixed in their thinking

When I moved to Kuala Lumpur and left the safety of corporate for entrepreneurship and venture capital, I was forced to look at everything differently

Titles and hierarchy no longer mattered

What mattered was building from scratch, taking risks, and trusting the unknown

That change was uncomfortable. But it unlocked opportunities I never would have seen otherwise

We all face moments when the old way of thinking is not enough. That is when growth really begins

If we step back, ask different questions, and see through another lens, whether it is a customer, a mentor, or even our younger self, we open the door to possibility

New perspectives create new choices. New choices create new results.

So if you’re 36 or 37, you’re already halfway. Not 50

And when you factor in how time feels faster as we age, your real mid-point in perceived time isn’t your thirties. It’s closer to 21

Most people spend the first half of their life preparing for the second half that never comes

No one reaches the end and says, “I wish I’d played it safer.”

If there’s something you’ve been sitting on start it. Build it. Live it.

Quit or not to quit...

Sundays look a bit like this for a few hours most weekends as I prepare for the week ahead

I used to dread Mondays as I fell into the trap that my value as a human was tied to my job and unfortunately I had started to hate my job

My advice to anyone in corporate right now who doesnt enjoy their work is to get on an online accelerator program and test your startup idea

Use 10-15 hours a week (which can be easily gained from reducing social media and Netflix) to build out a clear solution to a real world problem, a strategy to take it to people who need it and systems that you need to run it

You can get this done in a month. If you cant find 10-15 hours a week this is a good indicator your job isnt hurting you enough and/or entrepreneurship isnt for you

Now is the time to build the entrepreneurial skills you may not have and leverage the experience that you do

The biggest regret of the dying is not living a life true to themselves. Dont make that mistake, but also dont throw the baby out with the bathwater

Hustle on the side, build in silence, use your salary to support you as you build your business and then make the jump

😲【YouTube Just Changed the Game for Brand Partnerships.】

In the past, if a new brand wanted to grow quickly on YouTube, a common strategy was to collaborate with a big creator for some "indirect" exposure. The results were always hard to track.

But damnnn...This morning, the rules changed. YouTube's new "Collaboration" feature is officially live.

This feature allows an established channel and a new channel to co-publish the exact same video, simultaneously. 

The implications are huge:

👤 For the "Little Brother" (the new channel):

You get instant, direct access to the established
 creator's audience and traffic. Your channel's growth is massively accelerated because you're being introduced to a relevant audience.

👑 For the "Big Brother" (the established channel):

This is where it gets interesting. It's basically an officially supported "power-leveling" service—a term from gaming where a high-level player helps a new player level up fast. 

The established creator gets paid a fee for this service, and all the views and revenue from the collab video are attributed to their channel.

My Take for Founders & Marketers:

This is a significant shift in influencer marketing. It's evolving from paying for "shoutouts" (indirect exposure) to investing in "direct audience sharing."

It's a brand new, trackable way for companies to partner with creators to reach a qualified and engaged community.
