Hi! I'm Ankit, an engineer by qualification who found his calling in finance during the second year of engineering.

After working for a few years as an investment banker in India and the US, and achieving financial independence, I decided to follow my dream of becoming an entrepreneur.

Family and friends have regularly asked me for advice on managing their money and taking better financial decisions. So WealthUp was an obvious choice.

“What does success mean to you?” During a workshop conducted by Shell at BITS, the facilitator asked us. 

He asked me first and I instantly replied, “If I’m happy, I’m successful.”

But what is "happiness" I was never taught.

Growing up, I was told:
study hard → high-paying job → work harder → tons of money → happiness

When I started working as an investment banker, I loved every minute of it—despite very basic pay (initially), long hours, and high levels of stress.

I didn’t compare myself to anyone and I was consistently the top performer—without "trying".

Here’s what I have realised about happiness and success:
1. Success isn’t about numbers.
2. Measuring ourselves against others takes away the joy from our journey.

If my goal is to be successful, I do need to be happy.

And now I finally know that happiness is about enjoying the process of learning and finding satisfaction in the impact of my work—no matter how small or big.

When I shifted my focus from rigid benchmarks to personal growth and meaningful contributions, I unlocked a deeper sense of fulfilment.

Last week when the market dipped, I invested a few lakhs in stocks I’d been waiting to purchase. 

And it made me realize how much I have evolved as an investor.

Back in 2019, the thought of investing large sums in the stock market in one go felt crazy. 
🫣  “Itna paisa kon dalta hai stocks mein.”

After UBS, I did some freelancing and made decent money, which was lying in my bank account. The idea of putting big amounts into stocks was still too risky.

Instead, I turned to what many consider a "safe bet"—real estate. 
🏘️ “Bada paisa toh real estate mein hi jaata hai na!”

Well, that turned out to be one of the worst investment decisions I have ever made. If I had invested that money in the stock market - this is before Covid - the corpus would have grown multiple times by now!

😌 Today I can comfortably invest larger amounts without blinking an eye if the market dips. 

This journey from ₹5 lakhs to ₹25 lakhs to beyond didn’t happen overnight. It took hours of research, countless mistakes, and gradually building the confidence to make smarter, bolder moves.

Everyone has their own path, but if I had someone trusted to talk to during those early days, the journey would have been smoother and certainly more profitable.

Investments don’t feel like risky gambles if you have a well-thought-out strategy behind your decisions.

I had been following up with a lead for months, and she suddenly disappeared. 

Sounds familiar?

I spoke with a woman eager to secure her newborn son's future. She had close to 60 lakhs lying in her bank account and felt completely lost.

She was the perfect TG for us, seeking guidance but struggling to find the right fit.

Our values clicked, and we had really positive conversations, but she disappeared unexpectedly - radio silence for months.

Financial planning is super important, but it's not always a priority in one’s life.

Life has seasons—enjoying life, starting families, career breaks, caring for loved ones etc.

I've realised that timing is everything.

Sometimes you can give the best sales pitch and do everything right, but the conversion will only happen when the customer is ready.

I always ask people, "Are you more interested in increasing your net returns or minimizing costs?" Most people don't know the difference.

I often meet students or young people who trade stocks or F&O and seem to think it is earning them some income. What they seem to never do is compare themselves with the Nifty or well-known actively managed funds.

I heard figures like 'I earned 25-30% in the past year'. But my MF gave that to me without me lifting a finger. And without tax (since I haven't redeemed). I'm not naming the fund but most of you who follow me, know where I invest.

Mar ’23 and Sept’24, only a handful of active mid-cap (11 out of 29) and small-cap (3 out of 24) funds were beating their benchmarks. But after the market dip in late September 2024, everything changed!

An impressive 28 out of 29 active mid-cap funds and 26 out of 28 small-cap funds outperformed their benchmarks. 

What’s happening here? 

It’s all about skilled fund managers who know how to navigate volatility.

What made active funds stand out?

1.⁠ ⁠Avoiding big losers: Many stocks fell sharply during the recent correction, making up a significant portion of the indices—32.4% for mid-caps and 28% for small-caps. Unlike index funds, active funds had lower exposure to these stocks which fell over 15%. 

2.⁠ ⁠Smart flexibility: Active managers have the flexibility to invest at least 65% in their segments while deciding what to do with the remaining 35%. Fund managers adjusted their investment positions by holding cash or carefully picking better-performing stocks.

What can we learn from this?
While there is merit in passive funds, active funds can be a powerful tool to grow your wealth, especially in volatile markets. But selecting the right funds and keeping an eye on them is crucial.

investing in active vs passive (index funds)

A new word popped up on my radar yesterday—enshittification—have you heard it?

Enshittification is when companies start by offering great products/services to attract customers, but over time, they gradually degrade those offerings in order to boost profits. 

Customers find it hard to walk away, because of sticky subscription models, lack of alternatives or user dependence.

Here’s why I think this is happening:

1. As companies scale, they shift from delivering real value to maximizing profit. So hidden fees, more ads, and poor customer service start to creep in. 

2. When a company reaches a certain level of success, they start to coast. They think their customers have nowhere else to go, so they stop innovating. 

3. Instead of using data to enhance products and genuinely serve customers, businesses use it to squeeze more revenue—subscriptions upsells, and bombardment of ads that feel invasive instead of helpful. 

Enshittification happens when companies lose sight of what made them successful in the first place—their customers.

We all know it’s more cost-effective to retain a customer than to constantly acquire new ones.

We all know how high CACs are.

We all know companies are bleeding money to capture market share.

Yet companies stop prioritizing customer experience.

I’ll even go as far as to say, customer service is practically non-existent in most sectors in India.

So, it’s no wonder that brand loyalty is becoming a thing of the past.
