My career is made up of survival stories. That may sound like a bad thing, but stay with me here. When I worked in the UAS (drone) industry, I spent my days demo-ing hardware. Hardware that is big, expensive, and comprises pretty dangerous propellers. I learnt a very important lesson there - tech fails, and you can never be fully prepared for that. (It’s extra scary when that failing tech is a huge chunk of hardware falling from the sky… but you’ll have to get in touch if you want to hear more about that.) So, if you can’t always stop it from happening, what do you do when something goes wrong? You learn. With drones, I learned that different conditions lead to different outcomes, and require you to think about different elements of the product. And hey - are people really all that different from drones? 😉 Yes, they are. But the point is, you need to get to know someone and their circumstances before you can really work with them well. So, I’m failing, surviving, and learning. And that way, I’m building relationships with people (not drones) which is the true basis of all business. And how do you survive? As a mountain biker, I like to say - you pedal harder. Try harder, want it harder. That’ll help.
