The Creative Destruction Lab (CDL) is one of the world’s premier programmes for seed-stage,
massively scalable, science- and technology-based ventures. CDL has helped more than a thousand founders, and alumni valuation exceeds $17 billion, with an aim to grow to $100 billion by 2027. The programme targets companies that have the potential to transform our social, industrial and economic landscape. CDL-Oxford was the first CDL site outside North America, based at Saïd Business School.

As a Venture Recruitment Analyst at CDL-Oxford, I supported the recruitment, evaluation and selection of Climate Ventures for the 2023/24 programme year. This included:

Sourcing high-quality start-ups (e.g., from VC portfolios, University incubators, etc.) to join the 2023/24 programme year and engage through emails, LinkedIn messages, and calls.

Collaborating with CDL-Oxford ecosystem partners to identify and source a pipeline of quality ventures for the CDL Program 

Managing recruitment database infrastructure, including supporting the ongoing implementation of customer relationship management systems.

Proactive engagement with potential ventures, conducting due diligence to identify innovative and high-potential Climate ventures for the CDL program

Head of Development

Industrial Development Corporation

Leading, facilitating and coordinating the implementation of the Portfolio Transformation Project, introducing a differentiated portfolio management strategy, approach, systems and processes,

Developing and formulating a standard Strategy Execution framework and principles to be adopted for implementing strategic initiatives within the organization,

Managing stakeholder engagements and alignment workshops for change management consultations across departments within the organisation

Assisting Project Sponsors and their leadership team develop detailed project charters, with SMART objectives, deliverables, milestones and key performance indicators,

Lead the Project Management Office for a $10 billion Portfolio Transformation Project, with a cross-functional team members of 40 members (20 FTE).

Conducted detailed review of the Portfolio Management Policy, and 6 Departmental operational systems and procedures to ensure alignment with the revised policy, values and operating model structure.

Prepared progress update report and facilitated steering committee, project leadership and work stream meetings to regularly monitor project progress and engage key stakeholders for delivery support.

Strategy Execution Specialist

Working in a dynamic professional team conducting investment due diligence analysis focussed on financial, operational and marketing due diligence.

Business plan evaluation, and preparing three statement financial forecasts for investments, with thoroughly researched macro and micro assumptions and based on discussions with key stakeholders.

Negotiating deal terms and conditions to ensure development impact outcomes including Environmental, Social and Governance initiatives are considered for each investment.

Restructuring funding and balance sheets to support and enable the turnaround of businesses in distress, based on negotiations with existing creditors and strategic option analysis.

Liaising with stakeholders including customers, bankers, suppliers and investors when evaluating funding proposals and ensuring key risk mitigation.

Managing a portfolio of clients post investment, measuring their performance against investment forecasts, including financial and non-financial milestones.

Conducting valuation forecasts and discounted cash flow valuations for expansionary mergers and acquisitions.

R1.8 billion (US $113 million) in investments evaluated, and executed for more than 15 transactions as an investment associate.

Investment Associate

Progression in internal deal maker development programme, focussed on grounding competencies gained on financial due diligence analysis and conducting on the job supervised training on Technical/Operational due diligence:

Financial analysis and financial modelling,

Balance sheet structuring, recommending appropriate funding instruments to support transaction,

Detailed operational due diligence analysis,

Analysis of operating costs, capacity assessment, Supplier risk analysis, capital budgeting and analysis and evaluating technical risks

Report writing and presentation inputs for decision making

Marketing, Operational and Financial Due Diligence fundamentals classroom training, supplemented by on the job training, a development track designed for Dealmakers. First year, focussed on on the job training and competency evaluation for Financial Due Diligence analysis.

Rotations in Financial Reporting, Internal Audit, Front office deal making, Portfolio Management, Corporate Governance and secondment to a Cast Steel Product Manufacturer for Management Accounting experience. Completed SAICA Competency hours and passed the Assessment of Professional Competence at first attempt.

Trainee Accountant (SAICA Articles)

Experienced financed professional with 10 years of experience in investment; from deal sourcing, investment evaluations and due diligence to investment, portfolio management and exits, and strategy; strategy analysis and design, stakeholder management and major project implementation.
