Description: The project was an information portal advertising agency for the placement of information for employees and clients of the agency. The area of responsibilities covered system optimization for high-load and enhanced security requirements, extending a self-written framework based on Symfony to allow changing the existing application easily due to requirements, and optimizing DB queries in order to deal with high-load and improve overall platform performance.

Description: The project was about training and monitoring the level of qualification of medical personnel in the field of pediatrics. The project for pediatricians includes such modules as posting information, holding conferences, seminars, webinars, testing doctors, and synchronizing training data with the state base of the Ministry of Health. There are also educational blocks inside the portal. They provide information, courses, tests, and statistics. Different types of users with different responsibilities could manage all these information. The system is also optimized for high-load and enhanced security requirements. The self-written framework based on Symfony allows changing the existing application easily due to requirements. The DB queries were optimized in order to deal with high load and improve overall platform performance. The area of responsibility covered a part of the platform related to the search engine and search filtering. The new required features were implemented in order to improve the sales offers processing algorithm, overall performance improved, administrator part of the project was extended with the required function for statistics control. The YII2 framework allows easily apply of the approach that was chosen and optimizes it due to changing requirements.

2️⃣ 𝗦𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗹𝗱𝗲𝗿 → 😱
You click the link, and it says “This folder is empty”. Years of decisions, standards, and governance… vanished. You instantly consider a career in gardening.

Architects are trained to design systems, draw diagrams, and align technology with strategy.

But no one really prepares us for the invisible skills. The ones that turn a model into reality.

Let’s be honest. The hard part isn’t drawing the architecture.
It’s making it work with real people, real constraints, and real resistance.

Here’s what no one tells you matters just as much as frameworks:
💠𝗟𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 — deeply, to what’s said and unsaid.
💠𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 — turning “latency issues” into “business impact.”
💠𝗣𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘂𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 — when your elegant solution threatens someone’s KPIs.
💠𝗡𝗲𝗴𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 — when priorities clash and resources are limited.
💠𝗥𝗲𝗳𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 — because the right solution in the wrong language still gets rejected.

These aren’t soft skills. These are delivery-critical skills.
They don’t live in PowerPoint. They live in meetings, hallway chats, and tough decisions.

And if we want our architectures to live, we need to stop treating communication as “extra.”

Great architects don't just model complexity, they simplify it, humanize it, and carry it across the finish line.

Thank you to James Serra for giving me a copy of 𝘿𝙚𝙘𝙞𝙥𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝘿𝙖𝙩𝙖 𝘼𝙧𝙘𝙝𝙞𝙩𝙚𝙘𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙚𝙨, which I had the pleasure to read. I truly enjoyed it, in fact, I can confidently say this is one of the best professional books I’ve read in recent years.

What struck me most was how clear, practical, and balanced the book is. James manages to take a subject that is often clouded by hype and vendor marketing data architecture and present it in a way that is both accessible for non-specialists and still highly valuable for experienced professionals. The structure of the book makes it easy to navigate: from foundational concepts like the six Vs of big data and data maturity stages, through essential architecture elements, to detailed, vendor-neutral comparisons of modern patterns such as Data Fabric, Data Lakehouse, and Data Mesh.

Strong points I especially appreciated:
✔️𝗩𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗼𝗿-𝗻𝗲𝘂𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝗯𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆 — every architecture is presented with both pros and cons, helping the reader make informed decisions instead of following hype.
✔️𝗖𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗱𝗲𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 — terms like “schema-on-write” or “data mesh” are explained in plain language, but without oversimplifying.
✔️𝗕𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 — I liked how the book doesn’t just stop at the technical layer, but also discusses organizational readiness, roles, and common pitfalls in data projects.
✔️𝗣𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 — the evolution of architectures is explained chronologically, which helps understand why certain patterns emerged and where they fit best.
✔️𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗲 — the book often warns about traps, such as thinking Data Mesh will magically solve all problems. This grounded approach makes it much more trustworthy.


While the conceptual clarity is outstanding, some sections (especially those on Data Mesh and Data Fabric) could benefit from more real-world case studies or tooling examples to bridge the gap between high-level principles and practical implementation. 
While the vendor-neutral approach is a strength, a short appendix with examples of how these architectures could be realized with major platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP) might help practitioners who need to translate theory into action quickly.

Once again, thank you to James Serra for giving me the opportunity to read Deciphering Data Architectures. I truly enjoyed every chapter, and I can say without hesitation that this book is going to stay on my desk as a long-term reference. For anyone in data architecture, from beginner to experienced architect, this is a must-read.

— 𝗙𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗣𝗢, it’s unified customer experience
— 𝗙𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗧𝗢, it’s an architectural pattern or integration layer
— 𝗙𝗼𝗿 𝗗𝗲𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺𝘀, it’s just a convenient backlog
— 𝗔𝗻𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗲 else it’s a buzzword that makes it easier to get funding 

This is where architects come in.
They must be the first to ask:
“𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘦𝘹𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘭𝘺 𝘥𝘰 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘸𝘢𝘯𝘵 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘮?”

𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗻:
✔️ Help define the actual goal
✔️ Untangle the different meanings and expectations
✔️ Explain that a platform is not a product it’s an interaction model
✔️ Most importantly: connect the business vision to technical reality

𝘉𝘦𝘤𝘢𝘶𝘴𝘦 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵...
You end up with a framework without a strategy, an API without users, and an architecture without a business model.

The fastest way to double your debt? Buy someone else’s.

Mergers, acquisitions, and group expansions are a breeding ground for architecture debt.
Why? Because integration is treated as a technical problem, not an architectural and strategic one.

𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗼𝗻 𝗠&𝗔 𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝗯𝘁 𝗽𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝘀:

After acquiring a smaller airline, one group retained 3 different CRMs, 2 loyalty programs, and 5 booking channels — with no integration roadmap.

Each team "kept what worked for them".

About two months ago, I started something that felt both simple and bold:

Because architects are often expected to draw diagrams not challenge structures.
I wanted to share what I’ve seen, start deeper conversations, and build a space where we talk about what really holds us back and how we can fix it together.

♖ 𝗗𝗲𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘀 / 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁 𝗢𝘄𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀 — 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗼𝗼𝗸𝘀
Straightforward. They like clear goals and clean paths. Just give them direction and let them run.

♗ 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘀 / 𝗔𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘆𝘀𝘁𝘀 — 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗽𝘀
They see diagonally. Insightful, strategic but don’t ask them to move in a straight line.

♘ 𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 & 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗿𝘀 — 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗞𝗻𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀
They jump weirdly. Solve strange problems. Nothing about their movement is predictable… and that’s the point.

♙ 𝗗𝗲𝘃 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺𝘀, 𝗜𝗧 𝗢𝗽𝘀, 𝗗𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺𝘀 — 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗮𝘄𝗻𝘀
Numerous. Underrated. Pushed forward and under pressure, they grow into Queens.

🧠 𝗔𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗔𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁?
You’re not a piece.
You’re the board - the system that holds it all together.
Or maybe the AI calculating risk, patterns, and the next 3 moves ahead.

𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗮 𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗽𝗵𝗼𝗿, it’s 𝘩𝘰𝘸 𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘺 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘢𝘯𝘪𝘦𝘴 𝘰𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘻𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘪𝘵.

Agile has brought speed.
But without architecture alignment, it often brings chaotic debt too.

After 1 year:
They had 3 separate customer identity systems
14 services were doing payment validation

Core platform integration was constantly breaking
➡️ Delivery was “fast”, but the system was falling apart

A director once told me:
“𝘉𝘺 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘧𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘻𝘦 𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘢𝘳𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘵𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘮𝘰𝘥𝘦𝘭, 𝘸𝘦 𝘢𝘭𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘥𝘺 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘳𝘦𝘦 𝘯𝘦𝘸 𝘱𝘳𝘪𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘦𝘴.”

And he was right.
Corporations move fast.
Reorg after reorg.
A new platform every quarter.
That shiny "Digital Strategy 2024"? Already outdated by July 2025.

In this chaos, the architect can no longer just be a designer.
Diagrams alone won’t solve everything.
You can’t spend 6 weeks drawing a target state while the MVP is already being built.

✔ Shift from documenting to coordinating
✔ Become a mediator of change
✔ Step up as a navigator through the flood of initiatives

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀:
✔ Lightweight formats (canvases, frameworks, principles > 80-page PDFs)
✔ Fast artifacts instead of "final bibles"
✔ Strategic-level conversations, not just system blueprints
✔ Architectural facilitation: connecting people, asking questions, highlighting risks and overlaps

In a fast-changing environment, adaptive architecture is no longer a trend, it’s survival.

We all know the phrases. They appear in meetings like uninvited guests sometimes funny, sometimes terrifying. Here’s my personal bingo card:

1️⃣ “𝗝𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲”
Translation: We have no idea what we want, but it should cost nothing and be ready yesterday.

2️⃣ “𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗱𝗼 𝘄𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗱𝗼𝗰𝘂𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻?”
Because, dear friend, future-you will not remember why we chose that integration in 2025.

3️⃣ “𝗜𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗺𝘆 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗻𝘆”
Great. And I’m sure your fridge at home also “works,” but that doesn’t mean it belongs in a data center.

4️⃣ “𝗖𝗮𝗻’𝘁 𝘄𝗲 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗯𝘂𝘆 𝗮 𝘁𝗼𝗼𝗹?”
Yes. And we can also buy a piano but it doesn’t make us concert pianists.

5️⃣ “𝗬𝗼𝘂’𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘁”
Fun fact: Complexity is usually already there… I’m just the one pointing at it with a diagram.

6️⃣ “𝗟𝗲𝘁’𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝘁𝗼 𝗶𝘁 𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿”
Also known as: The black hole of decision-making. We will never see this topic again.

7️⃣ “𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘀𝗰𝗼𝗽𝗲”
My personal favorite. Especially when the “scope” was defined on the back of a napkin last Tuesday.

8️⃣ “𝗪𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲 𝗳𝗹𝗲𝘅𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲” — 𝘽𝙄𝙉𝙂𝙊!
Ah yes, the magic phrase that justifies any last-minute pivot, scope creep, or complete reversal of strategy. Congratulations, you’ve completed your card.

Centralized EA: the fortress of governance.
Federated EA: the marketplace of autonomy.

𝗖𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘇𝗲𝗱 𝗘𝗔
✅ Consistency, standards, and a single source of truth.
✅ Easier to enforce compliance and manage risk.
⚠️ Can feel slow, rigid, and disconnected from delivery teams.
⚠️ Risks overloading the central team with decisions.

𝗙𝗲𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗘𝗔
✅ Empowers business units to move fast.
✅ Closer alignment between architecture and delivery.
⚠️ Risk of fragmentation — multiple “versions of truth.”
⚠️ Harder to maintain enterprise-wide alignment.

In theory, you choose one.
In reality, many organizations land somewhere in between:

Central standards for core systems.

Federated flexibility for domain-specific innovation.

The key is balance enough central control to keep coherence, enough autonomy to keep speed.

On weekdays, you’re explaining.
Clarifying.
Aligning.
Defending decisions, strategies, designs.
Proving (again and again) that you’re qualified, skilled, capable.

But weekends?
You read.
You sleep in.
You walk the dog.
You do nothing impressive and no one asks you to justify it.

And that’s exactly what makes it healing.
There’s no “what’s the outcome?” or “can you present that?”
Just you without performance mode.

To be honest, I’m a little tired of always having to demonstrate my “professional worth.”
So this weekend, I’m taking a break from proving.
And maybe, that’s when I feel most like myself.
