Storytelling is at the heart of my life’s work. Writing fiction is only one manifestation of it. Our lives are ruled by stories, the stories we tell ourselves and the stories we tell others. They either empower us or keep us stuck. They draw the right people to us like magnets and repel the wrong ones. As a journalist, I developed a “nose” for stories. During the research, I learned how to peel back the layers that keep the truth hidden. A story is always about going courageously for the heart of the matter, the kernel of truth. We unravel the truth only by gaining people's trust, each of whom will reveal their own truth, part of a larger puzzle which reveals itself slowly, responding to gentle persistence. When I taught French to adults, I found that internal stories played a big role in language learning. Getting adults to love a foreign language, to experience a childlike enjoyment in classroom activities, to be okay with making fools of themselves in front of other adults on their way to fluency, it had nothing to do with language and everything to do with the stories planted in their heads that were keeping them stuck. “I suck at languages.” “French is hard to learn.” When these stories were replaced by new ones, they soared. I can get to the angle that will unlock your story, the story that rings true to your essence, the story that will resonate with your ideal clients. I can see the forest for the trees, and give you the perspective which you might be missing. The forms of that story are malleable, it could be your website, it could be an email campaign for a launch of a new product, or it could be a campaign to reposition a B-class product as a premium one.
