We've hired 40 people at Storylane. Zero in-house recruiters used.
Here's why I'm against hiring recruiters early:

Recruiters can't tell your story.

They use your profile to pitch candidates, but they don't understand:

- Your vision for the company
- The culture you're building
- How this role fits your future

What usually happens:

• Recruiter screens candidate
• Candidate gets excited about the "opportunity"
• Founder finally talks to them
• Misalignment becomes obvious
• Everyone's time is wasted

My approach:

Every interview goes through me.

This works because:

→ Candidates hear the vision directly
→ They understand the mission from day one
→ They join more committed to the company
→ Trust starts building immediately

My advice for founders:

Until you're 100+ people, be the hiring person yourself along with department heads.

Recruiters optimize for filling positions.

Founders optimize for building companies.

Two very different goals.

We are working really hard and smart Storylane.  My calendar goes from 8 AM to midnight across global time zones. 

This is not meant to glamorize or encourage. But, that's what it takes. 

Running a remote company at scale is intense.

Here's how I structure my days:

8 AM - 10 AM: Engineering & Product
10 AM - 12 PM: Internal team meetings (US time)
12 PM - 2 PM: Customer conversations
2 PM - 430 PM: Focused work
9 PM - 1230 AM: India team sync-ups 

The thing that keeps me going?

Impact drives energy.

When you see your work directly helping customers, burnout rarely happens. Every feature we ship has a clear connection to customer value.

Same applies for your team.

When engineers see users actively benefiting from their code, motivation stays high.

Also, 2 things I don't compromise on:

• 6 hours of sleep (had to learn to transition from needing 8)
• No laptop time from 4:30-8:30 PM (only phone 😉)

With the right structure and smart focus on meaningful work, you can sustain the pace.

At Storylane, we replaced SDRs with AI agents.
Here's what we're using instead of hiring more people:

Outbound prospecting:
→ AI SDR agent for outbound sequences
→ One person oversees vs full outbound team
→ Use signals like demo views, G2, pricing page visits
→ Focuses on quality, initial touchpoints and brand building

Sales qualification:
→ Building our Lily Sales agent for website qualifications
→ Lily is live on our website (beta launched last week)
→ Replaces inbound SDR qualification
→ No additional qualification SDR's needed

Support automation:
→ Finn AI through Intercom
→ Handles 50-60% of questions automatically
→ Focuses on free users and basic queries
→ No additional support hire needed

As a result, we're scaling without the traditional hiring curve in GTM

If you're an SDR reading this, here's my advice:

Don't compete with AI on tasks.
Use AI & Skill up.

If you're doing inbound or outbound qualification → become a product specialist.

AI handles the initial touchpoints.
Then you jump in to handle the value conversations.

Learn the product inside and out, then become someone buyers actually want to talk to.

That's the only path moving forward.

Show WHY this matters to me and HOW it's done.

Most demos focus on what the product does instead of why someone should care.

Here's what makes them unforgettable:

𝗧𝗲𝗹𝗹 𝗮 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀
Start with a problem your prospect actually faces. Not a generic problem - their specific pain point.

𝗦𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗰𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲 𝗶𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗹𝘆
Within the first 30 seconds, they should understand exactly what this solves for them and why it matters.

𝗨𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝘀𝗲
Don't show every feature. Show the 2 things they'll actually use to solve their problem.

𝗠𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗶𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲
Let them click, explore, and experience the product. Passive watching isn't memorable.

𝗘𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝘀𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲
Show them what their world looks like after using your product. Paint the picture of their success.

REMEMBER:

The experience matters more than the features. When someone visits your demo, they should feel like they're already using your product to solve their problem.

Show what life looks like after using it.
