Are you tired of working with translation agencies that pay peanuts for your hard work? If yes, I may have a solution for you. But first, let me ask you this... Is that you? ↓ - You love languages, travelling, multilingual communication, and cultural exchanges… - You studied foreign languages and even did a Master’s in Translations Studies… - You’ve always known that translation was the right career for you… Until you found out that… - The majority of translation agencies are more interested in profit than quality… - 0.07 USD/word is considered a pretty decent fee nowadays…and get this, you should be grateful for it too… - There will be mostly MTPE work in the future, paid at half your usual fee… Surely, that’s not what you went into translation for, is it? You see, thirty years ago, it was all about the art and craft of translation. Today, it is about the art and craft of buying and selling translations. And the cheaper some agencies buy, the bigger their profit margin is. The way things are, if you want to make good money as a translator today you need to either: a) Work with direct clients only + 5% of really good, boutique translation agencies, b) Be extremely fast (translate 1K+ words per hour) and command high per word fees c) Be open to diversification and other sources of income The first two are not easily achievable by everyone. Luckily though, there are many services one can pivot to. So, why content writing in particular? Because translation is a type of content. If you can translate it, it’s because someone else wrote it first. And if you are a specialist in a niche, then you can both write and translate for that niche. If you are, for example, a medical translator who specialised in this niche through your academic background or previous working experience, you can not only translate for medical clients, but you can also write popular medical articles. If you’ve got a knack for finances, know how to budget well and understand financial terms, you don’t have to limit yourself to financial translations only, you can write content for bank blogs too. No matter what your hobbies or interests are, no matter what your specialties or the experience you’ve acquired from your academic or professional background is... ...there are several companies in the world that sell products or services in that space and are in need of great content. And as translators we already have the niche expertise and most of the skills to ace this. Interested to find out how? Check out my Featured section.
