I was a member of this group of affiliated private practice and health system employed physician leaders working together with ChristianaCare administrative leaders to discuss shared challenges and potential solutions to continually improve the care for our patients.

I assisted with the design and implementation of a physician leadership network within ChristianaCare dedicated to supporting and accelerating each team member’s personal and professional leadership growth as well as our leadership initiatives across our diverse roles. We connect with each other to continually learn, grow and adapt in leadership together. Our Physician Leadership Network (PLN) works closely with our health system senior leaders and our emerging physician leaders. I served as the Chair of our PLN team.

I connected with our procedure and block time analysis team to analyze and improve our time optimization approach at the individual physician and procedure level as well as the unit based and system levels.  Our team included Endoscopy Suite leaders, perioperative data analyst team members, interventional pulmonologist leaders, a surgeon leader, and our administrative team member.  We used a human centered, data driven approach to continually improve and achieve our team goals.

This Innovation Center Governance Council was initially formed in 2016 and continues to work together to analyze and prioritize ChristianaCare Innovation Center initiatives and projects. I was an active member of this diverse team.

I was an active member of this collaborative physician leader team focused on physician leadership and effectiveness as well as physician professionalism.  This team also annually reviewed health system internal grant applications for new start-up clinical projects proposed by physician leaders across the health system.

I worked with our multidisciplinary team to iteratively improve our human-centered, team based approach to gastrointestinal and pulmonary procedural care analysis and optimization.  We focused on continuous improvement of our system safety, quality, patient-family-caregiver experience, care team flow, and efficiency.

Chair of the Endoscopy Performance and Value Improvement Team

I served in this physician leader role involving oversight of our health system endoscopy suites at Wilmington and Christiana Hospitals with a focus on safety, quality, patient and caregiver experience, new product and budget analysis, system efficiency, and cross-team collaboration with other care teams connected with inpatient and outpatient endoscopy care.  Our Endoscopy leadership team led and participated in patient care and system analysis with a goal of continuous learning and iterative improvement. This role involved working with gastroenterologists, surgeons, pulmonologists, anesthesiologists, perioperative services leadership, Department of Medicine and Department of Surgery leadership, endoscopy care nurses and staff team members, nurse anesthetists, data analytics team members, quality and safety leaders, and other overlap patient care teams across the health system.

This was a shared responsibility co-leadership role involving general oversight of the Gastroenterology Section at ChristianaCare with my GI physician leadership teammate Dr. Jared Hossack.

I helped design and implement a new Gastroenterology inpatient consultation service at ChristianaCare which also served as an initial bridge between two private practice GI groups. I then served in a co-leadership role as the co-Director of the new inpatient GI consult service with one of the leaders from the other private practice, Dr. Jared Hossack. The two private practices subsequently merged following this successful team based, inpatient care approach. I was actively involved in the inpatient consult service operations with a focus on patient safety optimization, cross-team communications and collaboration across two private GI offices and the health system, and continuous quality improvement.

I maintained an active clinical practice in Gastroenterology and served as a practice co-owner in my role as a partner in our merged GI private practice group.

I assisted with this gastroenterology group merger design and implementation with continued involvement in Delaware Center for Digestive Care (DCDC) system analysis and improvement.  We successfully merged two 10 Physician GI groups into our new DCDC corporation. In addition to serving on the Board, I was the Co-Chair of our IT Committee and led our multidisciplinary team analysis of 5 EMR platforms to help our Board decide on one EMR for our new, merged GI group.

The DHIN is the Health Information Exchange for the state of Delaware with a mission of maintaining and continually improving an integrated, statewide health data system for patients, providers, and health systems throughout Delaware.

I believe we can improve health care faster and more effectively together with team-based, compassionate care that is human-centered and system sustainable. 

We can strive for this goal using design thinking, data analytics with purpose, care plan co-design with patients and clinicians, and continuous learning and improvement across individuals, teams, and organizations.

Over the course of 12 years in Delaware, I experienced Gastroenterology private practice, endoscopy center co-ownership, and diverse health system physician leadership roles and experiences. Over time, I started to explore cross-training and experiential learning opportunities with health care start-up company partners. In August 2020, I joined the Intermountain Health team in a system level Gastroenterology physician leader role with a combination of leadership and clinical care responsibilities.

Throughout my roles and leadership journey in health care, I incorporate my own experiences and learning as a patient, family member, clinician, and leader to help improve the health care experience and system of care for others.
