Running a small business often means wearing a lot of hats. When I worked for a small lakeside motel & cottages resort, I was maintenance, housekeeping, front desk, management, and more. The job meant switching hats constantly throughout the day. That can be fun and also draining. I found myself in the hospitality sector via waiting tables while I was doing my graduate degree in religion. From restaurants, I moved into the hotel space by way of my in-law's lakeside resort in the remote Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York. Fun fact: that area, Hamilton County, NY—only 4.5 hours north of NYC—has the least people per square mile of any county in the eastern U.S. Infrastructure and staff were in short supply, but challenges were plentiful. I'm on a mission to help independent hoteliers face those challenges. I'm starting by gathering those stories in a podcast I'm calling Hotelier's Hatrack.
