On March 17, 2023, I made a phone call that saved my life.

I was giving a quiz to my university class when my phone rang repeatedly.
The caller was my medical doctor.

I stepped into the hallway to listen to the voicemail which urged me to call my doctor immediately. I hesitated, then made the call.

The previous day, I’d gone in for tests thinking I had a kidney stone, but the tests came back very serious. My doctor insisted I needed to go to the Emergency Room ASAP‼️ 

My bilirubin count was off the charts, and my liver wasn’t functioning. 

I went to the ER instead of my planned family trip to our beach house on Daufuskie Island. 

If I hadn’t called (& gone to the ER), I'd have been on an island with no bridge & no hospital when the sepsis hit.

Instead, I spent Spring Break in the hospital with 2 emergency surgeries, a loving family, incredible friends, & tons of prayer.

In the hospital, I kept thinking of my relationship with God & my family. 

I’m thankful to own dozens of real estate properties & 19 businesses. It’s given me the opportunity to employ hundreds of people. 

But at the end of the day, those aren't the most important things. I never anticipated being an UHNWI, but money is not the end game.

Prior to the ER visit, I’d resisted social media and lived a private life.
I came out of the hospital as a 43-year-old realizing I was living on borrowed time.

I’m now using LinkedIn, YouTube and other social platforms to share business and family lessons I’ve learned along the way.

I’m privileged to own nearly 50 real estate properties (residential and commercial). I own businesses in the sectors of aerospace, hospitality, sports, pets, retail, and real estate.

However, my identity is not found in my bank account, businesses, or real estate.

As a Christian, I believe my ultimate identity is in Jesus Christ who died a sacrificial substitutionary death to make eternal life possible and save me from my sin.

God graciously let me marry Abigail, who's far better than I deserve. 

After two miscarriages, God providentially gave us 5 amazing children. What a blessing!

I'm privileged to speak around the US, but the days I look forward to most are those spent with my wife and kids at soccer games, getting bagels at Panera on Saturday mornings, or reading a story together as a family.

And then, they want me to BUY their course.

My thinking is that-- if they've really made millions of dollars in business, investing, or real estate, they shouldn't need me to buy their course.

As I've had the opportunity to meet and interact with a few billionaires and many high-net-worth individuals, they've been gracious in offering advice/support for free.

As the Lord has blessed me, I want to give back to others.

They showed up early.
Stayed late.
Covered for a teammate.

Took the hard call.
Owned the mistake.
Quietly carried more than anyone realized.

And then, they got criticized in the meeting.

Unfairly.
Publicly.
Harshly.

You were in the room.
You heard it.
You knew it was wrong.

But you said nothing.

Let’s be clear:
If you don’t defend your people,
you shouldn’t be in leadership.

Leadership isn’t about being liked.
Or looking good.
Or managing metrics.

It’s about protecting the people who trust you to have their back.
Especially when it costs you something.

You don’t get to call yourself a leader
if you disappear when things get uncomfortable.

When blame is being thrown.
When reputations are on the line.
When someone needs to be shielded, not sacrificed.

You’ve seen the difference.

The manager who stays silent to keep peace.
 To avoid friction.
 To keep their own hands clean.

And the leader who steps in,
 not to create drama,
 but to create safety.

Because real leadership is about responsibility before visibility.

You don’t need to be loud to defend your people.
But you do need to be clear.

You speak up.
You set the record straight.
You have the conversation others are too nervous to start.

You say,
 “That’s not accurate.”
 “Here’s what actually happened.”
 “I stand by them.”

And you do it not because they’re perfect,
 but because they’re yours.

People will forget your quarterly goals.

They won’t forget how you showed up
 when their credibility was on the line.

They’ll remember if you covered them or caved.

If you advocated or vanished.

They’ll remember if your title meant they could trust you,
 or if it only protected you.

You don’t have to defend poor behavior.

But you must defend good people doing their best
 in tough situations.

Otherwise, you don’t have a team.
You have a revolving door.

So next time someone on your team gets thrown under the bus,
 don’t watch from the sidewalk.

Step in.
Speak up.
Stand with them.

That’s not drama.
That’s duty.

Because if your people don’t feel safe with you,
Then they’re not being led, they’re just being used.

Once the anchors of every American community, Department Stores (the red line) peaked around 2001. 

Saks Global is on the verge of bankruptcy.
Other giants have already fallen.

Macys and Kohls are struggling with declining foot traffic.

Accelerated by a massive cliff in 2013,

And a near-total flatline post-2020.

In that same window, Warehouse Clubs & Supercenters (the blue line) exploded.

This weekend a few friends told me they’re struggling to sell real estate.

The visual below shows why.

The U.S. housing market is experiencing a significant imbalance.

(with 37% more sellers than buyers)

That means 529,770 more sellers in the market.

(marking the largest gap recorded since 2013)

Currently buyers have the upper hand in negotiations.

Fast facts from a recent report:

- Austin, TX stands out as the strongest buyer's market, while Nassau County, NY is identified as the strongest seller's market.

- The gap between sellers and buyers has been above 35% since April 2025, increasing from 35.6% the previous month and 17% a year ago.

- A market is classified as a buyer's market when there are over 10% more sellers than buyers. Since May 2024, the market has consistently fallen into this category.

- Despite the surplus of sellers, many potential buyers are still unable to enter the market due to affordability issues. 

The housing market is expected to remain in buyer’s market territory for the foreseeable future, with sellers likely to cut prices or offer concessions to attract buyers.

Currently, 36 of the 50 most populous metropolitan areas are classified as buyer's markets, while seven are balanced and seven are seller's markets. 

The concentration of buyer’s markets is primarily in the Sun Belt and West Coast.

Balanced and seller’s markets are more prevalent in the Midwest and East Coast.

We’re taught to think “buy shares” and hope they go up.

But wealth?

Wealth is built across many lanes:

📈 Stocks → Own a piece of a company

🏦 Bonds & Loans → Lend money, earn interest

🏡 Real Estate → Own land, collect rent; or flip properties

💰 Currencies → Trade value between economies

🛢 Commodities → Invest in raw materials (gold, oil, etc.)

🎯 Derivatives → Buy contracts, not assets (options, futures)

🎨 Collectibles → Bet on rare, valuable things (art, baseball cards, comic books, etc)

And then there’s the meta-strategy:

But you don’t have to be a jerk.

Everything in life that you say YES to. . .
Is saying NO to something else.

Most of us need to get better at turning things down.

How to say NO in a nice way:

“I’d love to, but I can’t commit right now.”
 ➤ Honest. Polite. Clear.

“I appreciate the offer, but I have to pass.”
 ➤ Gratitude softens the no.

“I don’t have the bandwidth for this.”
 ➤ Respects your limits.

“I have other priorities right now.”
 ➤ Because your time matters.

“I can’t, but I’d be happy to support in another way.”
 ➤ A no with kindness.

“I need to focus on my existing commitments.”
 ➤ Protects your time without guilt.

“I’m honored, but I’ll have to decline.”
 ➤ Shows respect while setting a boundary.

“That’s not something I can take on.”
 ➤ Firm but fair.

“I wish I could, but I have to say no.”
 ➤ No need for an excuse.

“I can’t at the moment, but keep me in mind.”
 ➤ Leaves the door open.

“That’s not the right fit for me.”
 ➤ Direct, without being harsh.

“I need to prioritize my own work right now.”
 ➤ Because saying yes to others is saying no to yourself.

Boundaries aren’t rude.

They’re necessary.
