This is what my friend told me when I asked him what his plans were for the next 3–5 years…

And it reminded me of the time when I didn’t want to write a business plan because I thought that all I needed to do was:

• Look for a good market
• Craft a good offer
• Pitch it
• Iterate

And sure, this could quell your anxiety because you’re not overthinking…

But it’s not a sustainable way of living.

Why?
Because if you don’t plan your life out, someone else will do it for you.

It might seem like you’re in control when you “live in the moment”

but if you’re not clear on your vision, your objectives, and your goals…

You’ll be manipulated into serving others’ vision, objectives, and goals.

They will use your motivation (a short-term desire) to boost their own selfish needs.

And you’ll be dragged into situations you didn’t even want in the first place.

This is what happened to me when I just signed every single client I could…

Because I wasn’t clear on how I’d like to live my life and run my business —
I was just motivated by the fact that I could get money.

So I ended up resenting everything — even writing (my favorite activity in life).

So how can we not fall into the trap of “living in the moment”
while also managing the anxiety of overthinking?

One simple thing has been working for me:

I dedicate a day of the week where I do nothing but plan for the future.

And then after that planning stage — I don’t think anymore.

I just execute the actions I planned to do.

This works because it gives me a dedicated space to think — to actually figure out what I want without reacting to the world.

I’m not dependent on anyone else’s desires.

I can truly know what it is that I want (even if it’s not what pleases others).

And after that, I completely forget about planning and just do things.

No hesitation. No overthinking. Just execution.

Of course, while I’m acting, I still document what’s happening — the good and the bad.

So that when it’s time to think again (usually Saturday or Sunday),

I have proper information to reflect on.

It’s a constant process of thinking, acting, reevaluating, iterating, and repeating.
