I didn’t start Bibby Media Group to blend in. I started it to bet on the future.

Back in 2013, nobody was using LinkedIn for lead generation. It was just a digital CV platform; and most people treated it that way.

But after two decades in digital marketing, I saw something different. When LinkedIn launched, I knew it wasn’t just another network. It was the platform that would transform B2B.

So I bet everything I had on it.

I had just quit a job where the company took a financial turn for the worse. I was working without pay for several months and eventually pulled the pin. 

The day I left my job, my power cut off because of unpaid bills. I was $20,000 in debt and had nothing to lose. The next day, I started this business.

I booked my first meeting via LinkedIn by 8am and closed $15,000 in sales by 5pm. That day changed everything. We quickly became the industry leader in Australia for LinkedIn marketing.

I was invited to speak at conferences around the world, and was tracked down by leading brands like Westpac, Capital Group (the world’s largest hedge fund), and even Apple.

By the end of my first year in business, with no lock-in contracts, we hadn’t lost a single client. I had built a team of 12 and opened a beautiful office in Melbourne.

Most people put their prices up for one reason.

To make more money.

That’s fine.

But the best reason to raise your pricing is this:

It forces you to deliver more value than anyone else.

19 years old.
No laptops.

One night we met a man twice our age from Perth.
We got talking.
Business. Life. Ambition.

At the end of the night he said:

“Boys, I believe you’ll both be very successful.
And I’m willing to put my money where my mouth is.

When you get back to Perth, bring me a business plan.
As long as it’s well thought through, I’ll back it.”

We thought… Whoa, this is it!

Then he added one condition.

“You’ll have a third partner.
My son. He’s your age. He’ll be a director.”

What a dad move. 👏 

We got back to Perth.
Met his son.
We’ve been best friends ever since.

We launched an online beauty competition.
Partly to meet women.
Partly to become millionaires.

The business didn’t last.
But the friendship did.

We each went on to succeed in our own way.
And if we hit a challenge, there’s always a call we can make.
We still laugh and say:

“If we’d been more patient, 
that business might’ve taken us somewhere else.”

And that’s the lesson.
Your first failure isn’t the end.
It’s usually your first data point.
The moment you start learning what the hell you’re actually doing.

And the biggest lesson of all...
You never know who you’re going to meet.

And what you think it will lead to..
Might lead to something even better.

Probably not.

They buy from people they recognise and trust.

The data is clear.

We don’t need opinions anymore.
We don’t need guesses.

Test.
Measure.
Decide.

Marketing isn’t about being right.
It’s about being proven.
