Day #4 of 9 days 9 trends - Data Contracts 

Contracts have been around since the start of civilization and have evolved from verbal commitments, barters and trade agreements between countries, governments, communities or even individuals. Contracts are what keep the honesty, integrity and bilateral relations between the parties, sane. 
Data - as is quoted at time - is the new oil (which I humbly disagree with). Do you imagine being able to purchase or consume oil without a semblance of a contract? Or an Agreement? 

Data contracts are as fundamental to data as its architecture and pipelines. These components cannot be disassociated from each other. What make a great data architecture are the inbuilt data contracts in the form of #businessrules, #dataqualityconstraints #datastorage and #dataintegration detailed design definitions to name a few. 

Data contract, unlike traditional business contract may not hold up in a court of law, but believe you me, it may prevent a law suit driven by a data anomaly! 

Data contracts is a humongous topic and my idea for this post is not to over simplify it however it is something that we all need to be educated in and be able apply and understand it when we see one.

Most of us are very familiar with the concept of data products as they have taken a center stage in the last few years on how data must be prepared for consumption in the form of data products. 

However there is a fundamental need to treat data as a product itself which implies high availability, accessibility and readiness of data for consumption without it being engineered into a specific, limited purpose product. 

This is further propelled by the #LLMs that require #data of high quality to be able to produce the insights needed. You may now realize that Data Products by themselves will not be sufficient and hence the need to focus on making your data consumption ready - by AI models, machines and humans alike. Day #6 of 9 days, 9 data trends of 2024 - Data Democratization

None of the trends that we have been talking about for the past week would hold any merit if it were not for its consumption. Organizations today need to ensure that their workforce, technical and non- technical are equipped to produce and consume data with the same ease that was usually done by its data stewards.

And we are down to Day #7, 9 days, 9 days trends in 2024 - Data Value Realization

I was especially conflicted on what the last three which essentially means the top three data trends of 2024 are going to be. Of course I’ll disclose the top two in the day to come however, these posts are going to be longer than the previous ones as we explore
Fundamental theory for each of them. 

Of the three for me is going to be data value realization in this year.

It has been a while since data became a biggest celebrated asset at least in the way the commitment was shown towards it. We also have been talking about all the trends that make data and even more valuable asset, but what does this value truly mean? 

This is what will be explored in 2024 because now we have been through the phase of data explosion, we have artificial intelligence. 
We have the AI and LLMs that intend to make the best use of this data. However, what truly is going to set ourselves apart is the effort that will be spent to identify the return on such investments. 

In my opinion, this is what will be the trend for data value realization. I have stayed away from using the term data monetization because monetization is a very limited scope of real value of the data that an organization or a country or even an individual. Now is the time to put the tag of value, and the value could be in terms of operational efficiency analytical insights an actual monetary value or even just the intrinsic value of maintaining high-quality data within an organization. 

This is a very very complex topic and hence all data teams have always shied away from putting a return on investment KPI on their data projects. Which is one definite way of killing a project by itself because at the end no one is able to explain what value are we deriving from it. 

Hence, in my opinion, one of the top three trends or shifts that we see in 2024 would be Organizations, countries and even individuals obsessing on how do we realize and capture value from the data. This will become an integral part of the #datastrategy and will eventually makes it easier for us to have a business case for more and more date programs.

It’s Day #8 of 9 Days, 9 Data Trends of 2024 - AI X Data Governance 

This one’s special - it is more relevant than ever and yet understated than most. 

Artificial intelligence has existed for a couple of centuries (yes, you read it right!) its roots date back to the 1800s however the GPTs gave it the scale that it never had. However, this is where it is a lost race even before it begins - unless you’re y give it the fundamentals of data democracy, data quality and data contracts - Data governance. 

This is one area that SHOULD see an uptrend as much as the Gen AI buzz because data without governance is only nuisance. 

Why don’t we see it yet? Because most GenAI offerings are still Proof of Concepts. There are no true products yet that can fathom the data that is out there in their models and algorithms.

AI X Governance  is a two way road. It is my 100 💯 belief that AI WILL change how we do Data Governace, and AI Governance itself will make or break its future. 

This again, like Data Value Realization is a huge topic and cannot be summarized in this post however this is my area of focus as a Data Governance expert. For someone who lives and breathes Data Governance and Data Management, there couldn’t be a bigger trend and a bigger disruption on how we perceive this topic. 

Traditional Data Governance isn’t an option anymore and unless you are willing to reinvent your skills to include the impact of AI, you are part of a dying subject matter much like 15 MP digital cameras in the age of 34 MP Smartphone cameras. There is no recovering from this.. hence special focus on making this shift. 

As I said, this is my area of focus. I will be writing more content on this cross section of AI and Governance so watch out for more interesting stuff.. until then.. keep reading. It’s worth it.
