Time to remove the label “Diversity Hire”!

Labeling someone as a "diversity hire" implies that their success is solely attributed to their identity rather than their qualifications, skills, and accomplishments. 

This undermines their hard work and contributions, leading to unfair assumptions about their capabilities.

Using the term "diversity hire" perpetuates harmful stereotypes by suggesting that individuals from over-looked groups are hired solely to meet diversity quotas.

This reinforces the idea that certain groups are less capable or deserving of their positions, which is not only untrue but also harmful.

My mom has earned a new title: Coach Grandma, 

and let me tell you, 

she's not messing around. 

With a discipline like a military leader, 

she ingrained respect and order into our lives from the get-go.

Even as a pre-teen, I was up at the crack of dawn, summoned by Mom's voice to tackle chores like mowing the lawn. 

She'd tease us, saying, "Your friends are already out there," pointing to the landscaping crew, to which my brother and I would remind her they weren't our friends, just the pros.

She would say “why would I hire a landscaping crew, when I have kids that can do this.”

Summer vacations weren't all about lounging – no, Mom made sure we spent ample time reading.

That dedication to literature fueled my imagination and paved the way for my passion for writing. 

She encouraged creativity, pushing us to create wonders out of next to nothing. 

Today, I can turn a simple penny into something extraordinary, thanks to her guidance. 

Even now, as I navigate parenthood, Coach Grandma's influence is still felt. 

Her love for sports, stemming from her own days as a professional soccer player in Liberia, shines through.

Just recently, my 4-year-old son amazed us all by securing a spot on the Celtics junior basketball academy, playing alongside kids much older. 

And who was there, cheering him on from the stands? 

You guessed it – Coach Grandma, directing like a pro.

I'm beyond grateful for a mom who empowered us from such a young age. 

She's not just my mom; she's the true MVP.

I hate the phrase 'diversity hire.' 

It’s a damaging and divisive phrase.

No one wants to be labeled as a 'diversity hire.' 

It diminishes ones achievements, 

suggesting that one is hired only to meet a diversity quota. 

It undermines credibility and hard work, erasing the value and experience that one brings to the table.

So, let's retire the term 'diversity hire' and embrace a language that uplifts and empowers everyone.

As a working mom, balance often feels like an elusive concept. 

Instead, I've come to embrace the idea of integration. 

Today, I'm excited to share that my son, Taton, has been accepted into the Celtics Jr basketball Academy! 

He's not only passionate and bright but also loves math, reading, and of course, basketball. 

Integrating work and parenting, I'll be taking my video meetings from the Celtics facility, 

finding a corner where I can both work and cheer Taton on during breaks. 

It's all about finding ways to merge work and family life seamlessly.

There have been moments when I've felt upset with myself, 

particularly when I've felt powerless. 

I recall a colleague's experience of being the only woman on the team and how it impacted her projects, opportunities, and performance feedback, leading her to tears. 

Another colleague shared his struggle with burnout due to extreme workload, only revealing it after he ended up in the hospital. 
Upon recovery, he decided to leave. 

I also remember a colleague who was denied a promotion despite consistent positive feedback, due to feedback about needing to improve executive presence. 
I believed they deserved the promotion. 

I remember a number of managers sharing their ability to retain their team and the consistent actions they take to do that, but never factored into their performance review. 

These experiences inspired me to create Aerodei, an inclusive performance platform aimed at retooling organizational systems to 

eliminate subjectivity, 

ambiguity, 

time consumption, 

and bias,

that hinders employee productivity, 

engagement, and advancement. 

Specifically, Aerodei focuses on totally transforming three critical aspects of employee systems that are ineffective: 

goal-setting (people set it and forget it)

performance reviews (time consuming, subjective and extremly biased)

and engagement surveys (employees are hounded to take them and it’s not targeted)

So in the great words of Peter Drucker…

Yesterday, I sent an email to Mark Cuban. 

There are many times when I find myself wanting to stand in my own way. 

When fear whispers, "No, Netta, don't do it. You can't do it! It's not possible!" But I push through it!

Yesterday, I sent an email to Mark Cuban. 

I wrote and rewrote it multiple times. 

I almost deleted it, but instead, I kept it in my drafts. 

I thought, "He won't respond, so why bother sending it?"

I hesitated, but then I told myself, "Nope, I'm sending it." 

And I did!

I haven't received a response yet, but that's okay. 

Maybe he will respond, maybe he won't. 

What's important is that I didn't let doubt stop me.

I've made a promise to myself that as I build Aerodei, even when people reject me, say no, or show no interest in hearing me out, I will keep going!

And I want you to do the same! You've got this! 

We've got this!
