I had one of my biggest deals in my business career happen after something went VERY wrong.

Things are going to go sideways… how you handle the lows is so important. Crisis Management 101:  Address issues head on… pick up the phone, get in FRONT of the problem. 

Who you are in the bad times shows a lot about your character and it's a HUGE opportunity to shine. View obstacles as opportunities  to show up and rise the occasion.

Nick Horgan ★

Just saw that Andrew Arthurs made his announcement that he will be moving on from his role with Aimbridge Hospitality as CIO.  I have had the great pleasure of knowing and working with Andrew on a large number of projects with quite a few companies (for both of us) and have always had a tremendous amount of respect for him and what he does.  I first met Andrew when I was with Newmarket and he was with Vail Resorts and we worked on a very large project together.  I remember how impressed I was by the quality of the questions he asked.  

As both of us moved to more senior roles, we continued to work together on larger projects, including when he was leading IT for Destination Hotels, and Two Roads.  He was also extremely good to work with in his role as CIO for Aimbridge when we were working together on the Amaze Insights analysis and project.

However, the story I would like to share about Andrew is about how thoughtful he also is.  The two of us always made time together each year at HITEC, and there is one that stands out for me for sure.

The HITEC in Orlando was in June of 2022 is when I was in a career transition period.  I did have quite a few very good potential opportunities and job offers.  However, I was still very much trying to figure out what the right next stage for me was.  Andrew knew that I was actively looking, and we had also scheduled some time as I always value his opinion.  

In what I promise was not planned (however, I wish I had been smart enough to actually plan)......was that as I was walking with an extremely senior player in the hospitality space......on the way to my interview/catch up....Andrew Arthurs happened to be walking across our path.

Andrew, saw me, and this.....and walked over with a big smile and said: "Nick, It is so great to see you.  I know we already have time scheduled for later today....but I did not want to see you and not at least stop and say hello!"  

Even though it was just a quick hello, having the CIO of the world's largest management company stop and say hello right at the start of a conversation is certainly a good way to kick things off and I just appreciate that he took the time to do this, but more importantly just who he is as a person and how much he has helped to grow our industry and make it such a great place to be!

HUGE congratulations to Keryn McNamara on her promotion to Chief Information Officer (CIO) of Aimbridge Hospitality.  I have always had massive respect for Keryn and what she brings to the table and am also incredibly excited about Aimbridge and what they are doing in the industry.  Seeing Keryn speak last year at the Aimbridge conference in Las Vegas absolutely blew me away.  She did a presentation on AWE (Aimbridge Women Excelling).  If anyone has access to the video file of that presentation.....I would love to see that out in the world.  It was truly one of the most exceptional speeches I have ever seen and had such a positive message.  Kudos to you Keryn, I could not be more excited for you!

I have started my planning for HITEC 2024.  I am guessing I will not have the chance to sit on another bull with MASSIVE horns.  However, I am also sure that Hospitality Financial and Technology Professionals (HFTP®) will have some really great things in store for all of us.  Looking forward to seeing so many of my friends in Charlotte for HITEC!

Getting ready for my first Independent Lodging Congress in a couple of weeks.  Have heard great things about these events and looking forward to seeing many industry friends!

Independent Lodging Congress Indie Cultivate has been a great experience so far.  Very grateful to my friend Mike Uwe Dickersbach for inviting me to the event and the Highgate team who are huge supporters of the event.  Always great to spend time with old friends, well, let me rephrase that as long time friends….as well as meet new ones as well. This event has been good for both of those things.

Very cool breakout at Independent Lodging Congress.  The 6 hour flight makes it a little easier to not do an impulse buy here at the conference.  I really did (and do) want to bring this one home……

Even when you absolutely love your job…..it can be very worthwhile to take some time off to spend with the family….especially when it comes with some pretty epic views!

San Diego Mission Bay Resort - Area Revenue Analyst

What is that U-Haul doing across the street from my house, and why are they setting ladders up all around it?

This was the question I was asking myself a couple of years ago, with new neighbors who I had only just met a few days ago.  This was also during the heart of COVID, when people were still keeping their distance and things were all still a bit strange.

As I watched (as there was not much else to do), I saw a group of 3, then 5, then 6 or 7 people who were literally covering this U-haul with pieces of paper.  

As it started to take shape, I realized that they were turning this into what was by far the biggest Piñata I had ever seen.

They then shared with me that they had family coming into town, and were celebrating a big milestone birthday, and could not do so in the traditional way....so they got creative. 

This is what we saw later that evening on this.  I am not sure what made me thing of it, but I love everything about it.  Anytime you can spread joy, it is great to do so.  Maybe you do not need to turn a U-Haul into a Piñata to do it....but, then again......maybe you do.  You be you!

I spent some time reading about William Randolph Hearst and the amazing property he built alongside Julia Morgan who was a trailblazing female architect in a time that this was far from common. 

I think reading more about Julia and what she did and how she did it was what was most interesting to me.  This was my third visit to the property, and my first visit was when I was around the age my kids are now.  

I am hoping it will also inspire them on what is possible and what can be accomplished.  Not to say his life was not without controversy, and one tidbit out awesome tour guide mentioned was that he had spent $11M (which is probably at least ten times that in todays dollars) building this, and after he hit hard times….was something like $120M in debt…..which, I can’t event imagine what that would be in today’s dollars.  

In any case, the pool is certainly pretty epic!

Ok, that is a bit of a reach.  However, it is almost as big of a deal (to me). I have a great deal of respect for David Millili, 🎙️Steve Carran, Spencer Halford ★(look at that star by his name!) and Cody Adent.  They are the hosts of two of the best podcasts in our industry.....The Modern Hotelier and The Virtual GM by Vibrant Management.

Who does not love a great cross over event?  I will be hosting a combined podcast where we bring all four of these huge hospitality names together for one great episode.  I was supposed to wait to release this image until the teams had a chance to retouch it a bit.  However, guess what....this is a shot across the bow to let them all know.....when I come in as moderator....it is going to be NO HOLDS BARRED!  No questions off limits.  So, if any of you have been dying to know anything about how you launch a couple of the biggest podcasts in hospitality, please send me a DM and I may be able to fit it in when I have the people who are used to putting people in the hot seat, have their turn in that very hot seat!

This morning was certainly a major highlight and awesome opportunity for me.  We recorded the crossover episode of the The Modern Hotelier and The Virtual GM with Vibrant Management.  These are two of my favorite hospitality podcasts and the hosts of each are truly exceptional people:  Spencer Halford ★, Cody Adent, 🎙️Steve Carran and David Millili really some of the very best people in the space.

Have heard that the BITAC Events Operations is going really well so far.  I wish I were there, especially tonight.....since it is Game Night, which is typically my favorite part of the event.  Well, unless we have any surprise Billionaire guests that I get to interview.  That may have slightly edged out the Cornhole victory...however, I really did enjoy that part as well, so it is close.
