I sat down with Zena Everett, and I asked her what is the biggest warning sign of a broken admissions team.

Her Answer?
"I asked someone what do you actually do?, what's your success measures? and they don't know."

Let's take a moment to think: What is your job actually responsible for?

Not the title,
Not the official job description.

Just the real answer, what are you actually meant to deliver?

What's interesting is this, if you ask three people in the same team, you'll often get three completely different answer.

One person says it's about answering enquiries quickly,
Another thinks it's about events and marketing support,
Someone else believes its about reporting or administration.

When that happens, it's no surprise people feel overwhelmed.
If no one is clear about what success looks like, everything starts to feel important. Everything becomes urgent.
Meaning stuff that actually drives enrolments quietly slip down the to-do list.

"No" doesn't always mean the opportunity is gone.
Sometimes is can simply mean, "not yet".

But, here's the question that most people in education sales never asks themselves: what happens after you've been told no?

Do you find yourself disappearing, or do you stay useful?

I've just released a blog about this because I keep seeing the same thing. Independent schools, language schools, and education agencies put huge effort into getting the meeting, the enquiry, and the conversation.

But once someone says "not right now", the relationship quietly fades away.
That's where a lot of future enrolments are lost.

If it's handled well, a no can turn into a referral, a second conversation, or a client six months later.

If it's handled badly... it simply confirms you were only interested when there was a sale on the table.

🤷‍♀️ Dopamine trumps the routine work that gets results

We love a shiny new thing, especially if work-related, and especially if it means we don't have to do the daily things we know we should do..

We welcome the distraction and call it 'work'. Because dopamine loves a shiny object. A new CRM. A clever AI tool. A social media trend. A “game-changing” strategy someone on LinkedIn swears doubled their numbers.

It feels productive. It feels progressive. It feels like you’re doing something big! Woohoo! Dopamine receptors are pinging away! 🧨 

Meanwhile, the slightly dull, very powerful daily actions are sitting there waiting for you. But y'know... we could be doing THIS thing instead!! Let's go do that, the other regular stuff can wait.

The follow-up on the offer that’s gone quiet.
The call to the agent you keep meaning to reconnect with.
The referral ask you haven’t quite plucked up the courage to make.
The extra touchpoint that would move that enquiry from “thinking about it” to “where do I sign?”

Those just don’t sparkle, do they? They don’t give you a buzz. They require discipline and a bit of graft.

Now I’m all for trying new things. We should question what we’re doing. We should improve. If a new initiative is genuinely likely to bring in a significant uplift in right-fit enquiries, or materially improve your conversion rate, then brilliant. Put proper time aside for exploring it. Resource it properly. Measure it. It may well save you hours and give you insights that improve your numbers, but be intentional with your time spent on it. As something has to give, somewhere.

And be honest🫣 
Are you exploring the shiny thing in allocated innovation time? 'Spare time'?
Or are you letting it quietly eat the time that should be spent on outbound work, partner connection and consistent follow-up? Conversion activity.

Dopamine feels like progress.
But is it?

If your pipeline is progressing slower than you’d like, don’t assume you need something new. Ask yourself whether you’re executing the basics with rigour.

Shiny objects are fun. Enrolments are better, though.

If it doesn’t help you get more right-fit students into the right school, it’s not strategy. It’s entertainment. And that's ok - but your basics done first?
