Enactus Bath

A project that aims to reconnect students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) with potential employers by improving their social skills and finding out what they are good at. The goal for Reconnect is to start a sustainable social enterprise that will empower and change the lives of people with Autism. The Reconnect team have already carried out an assessment centre training activity in collaboration with a career’s advisor, which resulted in six ASD students feeling more confident and knowing where to improve for when they attend a real assessment centre.  We aim to grow with these students, making them feel more confident in showcasing their knowledge and skills and ultimately to empower them. 

- Established Reconnect in 2017, responsible for leading and motivating my team to be creative, hardworking and use initiative on our project that aims to benefit people with autism by improving their skills to become more employable. The goal for this year is to become a sustainable social enterprise. 

- Maintaining the drive and determination within my team in order for this project to develop and achieve our ultimate goal of empowering our beneficiaries.

- Creating content and promoting Enactus Bath projects and events on their Instagram page, which gained 100 more followers, boosting follower engagement, which resulted in more people signing up to join the society. 

- Skills developed include the ability to communicate effectively with people from various backgrounds and age groups, enhanced team work and leadership, and project management.

- Responsible for dealing with customer service issues, utilising all three of my language skills and marketing Caskells on Instagram and Weibo, taking and editing photos of products and writing insightful captions to increase awareness of brand.

- The role gave me a position of trust as I was required to solo operate the till which developed my skills in communication and numeracy 

- Handling stock from delivery to display and increasing my understanding of improving customer service, giving me a useful insight into the retail sector.

In reflection of my time as Stage Manager of Sha Tin College’s first TedX event, I think I achieved the goals of the team and my role as stage manager as I fulfilled the task of making the stage props with the help from the team I led. Turning up to meetings was one of the main tasks of being a part of the team, in order to help brainstorm ideas, choosing and agreeing on final decisions and helping to organise the final event. 

One of the most meaningful things from this experience was to work on a project with a few of my friends, as well as making new friends along the way, and being a part of the first ever TedX of Sha Tin College.  I created a stage prop that channelled the theme of “The Next Chapter”, and I am glad that it turned out the way I planned. The design was two sets of five book spines, which symbolises “The Next Chapter” and two sign posts facing opposite directions, with the words “The Next Chapter” and “The Past”. My team and I spent our breaks and after school time making the props so that it could be finished within the week, before the event. We put a lot of effort into making sure that it was the best it could be so that on the actual night, the stage would look appealing. 

If I could do anything differently, I would come up with more ways as to how to make better use of the stage, as there were only two sets of book spines on the sides of the stage. In the end, the show was a great success seeing as it was our first TedX event at Sha Tin College, and we believe that we have set the standard very high for the years to come.
