I know what it's like to be the only one. And, I don’t want that to be true for anyone else. My story started when I pursued a Bachelor's degree in Geology and Africana studies at Oberlin College. I was obsessed with history on human and geological time scales and wanted to see more people of color involved in the global conversation about climate change. I followed my passion to pursue a masters in Geology with a specialization in Paleoclimatology and traveled all over the country and even to Peru to collect data about earth’s changing climate. Being the only Black woman in my program taught me, quickly, that departmental climate plays a huge role in retention and persistence for marginalized people. I drew from my experiences to become an advocate for systemic change. My interests in STEM and issues of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion led me to: 💡 Mentor historically underserved students to navigate STEM education 💡 Build and sustain interdisciplinary faculty and staff learning communities 💡 Facilitate collective responsibility and accountability for change in higher education On LinkedIn that looks like creating content: 1️⃣ Sharing best practices for diversity, equity, and inclusion in STEM 2️⃣ Advocating for historically marginalized people in higher education 👩🏾‍🎓 If you are a minoritized person who needs a sounding board in navigating STEM, Higher education, and/or funding for graduate school my inbox is always open.
