The best advice I can give to ANYONE sending a cold email?


Make it so generic that it could apply to literally anyone you send it to.

Crazy to think that 1 year ago I was living in my parent's house coding for 12 hours a day with no paying customers.
Now, we've got a product that is literally changing the way our clients do business.

A couple of weeks ago, Dave Rubinstein had me on 100 Founders to show case some of the the things, my startup, BirdDog, is doing for sales teams.

We talk about how we help orgs:
-> Identify the signals that actually lead to revenue
-> Backtest those signals against closed won deals so we know they work
-> And keep teams constantly updated whenever something changes in their target accounts

Ultimately, this lets our clients focus on the actual best accounts...
And leads to revenue for them!

I'm so proud of what Jack Porter & I have been able to build in the last 15 months, and can't wait for what's to come!

I am NOT going to buy from you.

My startup, BirdDog, is NOT a sales signals tool. 
But, we're going to keep calling ourselves that.


Before we started BirdDog, my co founder Jack & I did some manual research for sales teams.

-> 6 months.
-> 40 hours in spreadsheets.
-> Looking in 2 year old PDFs...
-> ...and 2 day old news articles.

One client we worked with priced on the call volume of police dispatches.
They didn't have that data. 
In many cases, it was public, but it was a massive challenge to get it all.

Or, maybe there was a Police Chief out there saying that his department was focused on EXACTLY the problem that our client solved.

With 5,000-6,000 departments, that's easy to miss.
But, it's the best "signal" for them on the planet.
Not only does it help book a meeting, it helps them get to revenue.
Of course the org with a leader trying to solve the problem they help with is more likely to buy.

In both cases, we learned it was possible to get the data for them, the quotes and the numbers.
We learned about doing it manually.

And now BirdDog does it automatically.  

For any sales org, there's something similar, some piece of data that will hint them in on the right accounts.
We call them signals, because that's what everyone else calls them.
(and we can't afford to outmarket them)

Really, though, it's something more.
For each of our clients, we're building their dream data set.

Some examples...
- Soc2 Compliance
- Expanding into LATAM
- Launching a gen ai product
- Had a factory with downtime
- Offering signing bonuses for specific roles
- Uses Intent data 
- Has executives who travel

The commonalities between these data points?
They're connected to our client's value prop...
...And they can actually predict revenue.

That's a lot more than what most people mean when they say signals.

If you don't raise VC money, you're soooo cooked. 
You'll...


- Eat what you kill
- Do everything until it hurts
- Only invest time automating things that you can't eliminate
- Watch margins like a hawk
- Optimize for customer satisfaction
- Solve problems by subtraction, not addition
- Go at your own pace 
- Ignore hype cycles
- Own A LOT of your business
- Pay yourself off profits
- Build & own distribution channels & personal brands instead of paying for marketing
- Not aggressively scale prior to PMF
- And generally figure out how to do more with less

...if this actually sounds preferable to you, you're not alone.

This thanksgiving, I’m grateful for a lot of things…



Mostly hearing my niece sing “happy birthday” to the turkies outside.

I don't read the news.
I don't think you should, either.


The news isn't designed to make you learn things.
The news is designed to make you FEEL things. 
And, the easiest thing to make you feel?
Usually, it's anger or fear. 

I looked at 6 Wall Street Journal articles this weekend.

-> 3/6 were FOMO about some stocks or sectors
-> 2/6 were fear mongering on debt or war
-> 1/6 was an emotionally charged story about a con

And what would you get if you read any of these articles?
If you're like me, absolutely nothing other than a little cortisol. 

When was the last time you actually changed your behavior or made a good decision because of the news?

Social media is worse.
It's fine tuned and customized so you see exactly what's gonna get a rise out of you. 

This post is not exempt from that, either. 
I'm trying to make you upset, and I am trying to make you change your behavior. 
Will it work? 
Most of the time, it doesn't.
But I guess I'll try, anyways.

The most important trends I've ever learned about did not come from an article. 
They came from talking to people. 

The most effective before bed ritual I've ever had wasn't doomscrolling.
It's journalling. 

The most fulfilling action has not been consuming. 
It's creating.

As an early stage founder, your main job? 
It's to get someone to buy something from you.


It's not to build a product.
It's not to market.
It's not to fundraise.
It's not to product manage.

It's to convince someone that the thing you're building is worth paying for. 
It doesn't have to be a lot. 
And it doesn't have to be guaranteed, either. 

Back when my co founder Jack & I were doing manual research for sales teams, one of the first thing we sold?

An analysis of 3 of our client's competitors.
He could pay us $100, $300, or $500 depending on how valuable he thought it was.
He paid us $300.

A month or two later, we got a company to pay us $10K for a quarter for a different offer. 
They could take $5K back for any reason.

The product wasn't really "done". 
Most of it was manually delivered by me & Jack.

Those early dollars, though, helped us understand what people WOULD pay for.
And they made us a lot more focused as we built.

Maybe this doesn't apply as much for capital intensive spaces, but if you're building SaaS in 2025/26...
I'd have a hard time believing there's a better way to do it.
ESPECIALLY if you're operating in a space that you don't know so much about. 

What do you think, am I full of it, or should you lead with market validation in the form of revenue?

A year ago, I asked prospects for less than 1% of the money I do now.
Today, I ask for over 100x more... without flinching.



When you're first starting something new, it's hard to be confident.
-> What if it doesn't work?
-> What if you're wrong?
-> What if you fail?

If you're trying something new, that's normal. 
How could you have confidence for something you haven't done before?

Overtime, though, you start stacking evidence that you're right. 

A Hormozi quote sums it up:

"You don't become confident by shouting affirmations in the mirror, but by having a stack of undeniable proof that you are who you say you are. Outwork your self doubt."

-> Doubt
-> Is cured by action...

-> Can't sell? 
-> Sell 6 figures.

-> Can't commit?
-> Publish a blog 130 weeks straight

-> Can't code?
-> Write a product that transforms your client's biz.

Breathe. 
Be patient. 
Keep going. 

The confidence comes with results.
