Heard of dunning kruger? Here's my take, from experience.

With any discipline I have come across, there are 3 distinct "phases" of expertise, with a more nebulously defined 4th.

I have noticed this for skateboarding, music, marketing, wrestling, business, farming, and many other realms of knowledge. I wouldn't claim to be more than a novice in most of these, but this is how I see knowledge developing for all of them:

Novice - Anyone new who is just getting into it
Proficient - once you can do the basics, and have an understanding of how good other people are.
Expert - You know what you don't know, and have a sense of where your knowledge falls in the grand scheme of the field. You can judge someone else's abilities very accurately.
Master - No one lower than an expert can tell the difference between an expert and a master.

So here is where dunning kruger comes in:

When novices start becoming proficient, whatever they do starts seeming very easy. This false sense of confidence traps people in the "proficient" category, and they continue with less drive to improve, as they are failing to see how good other people truly are.

When you hit expert, its a humbling moment. Its the time where you finally realize how far you really are from being the best in the field.

That initial confidence can be great for staying engaged, but the faster you humble yourself and start to realize how hard it is to break the top 1% of a field, the faster you will improve.

a GREAT example I see often is the SMMA discussion on reddit.

Reddit is filled with 20-somethings that have novice or proficient levels of skill in social media marketing. They don't see the levels of efficiency, success, and intelligence that the top performers are capable of, so the field starts to look very "easy". 

And then, with their confidence about how well they can do the job, they go to reddit and ask "but how do I get clients".

Many of them likely try to launch an agency and fail, but come out on the other side humbled, with the blooming of true expertise just over the next horizon.

Most people suck at content marketing because they focus too much on production value and not enough on making good points.

We've all been there - staring at a blank page, frantically searching for a clever content idea to execute. The pressure to create something visually stunning or wildly entertaining is immense.

But here's the truth: The best content resonates because it addresses real questions and provides authentic value. 

Style points are secondary.

Think about the last few articles, videos, or threads that really stuck with you. Were they works of avant-garde art? 

Or did they offer straightforward ideas and insights you could actually use?

I'm not saying production quality doesn't matter at all. A polished look adds credibility. But when you obsess over pixels instead of substance, you're putting the cart before the horse.

Successful content creators recognize that making good points is 90% of the battle. The rest is just packaging those insights in a clear, accessible way.

Take it from me - I've had tons of my best-performing content start as casual replies to questions on Reddit or LinkedIn comments. 

By simply articulating helpful perspectives, I inadvertently created assets that resonated far more than my "produced" pieces.

The reason? I was focused on sharing knowledge rather than achieving arbitrary aesthetic goals. I made good points in an authentic voice.

Does that mean you should abandon quality entirely? Of course not. 

Presentation matters for maintaining professionalism and audience engagement. 

But don't let the desire for flash overshadow the fundamentals of actually having something valuable to say.

At the end of the day, people crave insights and solutions above all else. They aren't looking for smoke and mirrors - they want the real deal.

So get out of your own head, forget the pretenses, and start making good points again. I guarantee the people you're trying to reach will appreciate the substance over any bells and whistles.

Storytelling is More Than Just Entertainment

You've heard it before: storytelling is a powerful tool for marketers. But too often, the advice stops there.

Storytelling isn't just about keeping things entertaining. It's about creating context and stickiness for your messaging.

Think about it: when was the last time you remembered a list of features and benefits? Probably never.

But you probably DO remember stories people told you - whether they were from a book, a movie, or something your friend experienced.
That's because narratives engage your brain differently. Instead of just reciting facts, you're immersing the audience in a sequence of events that sparks their imagination.

It's this psychological transportation that makes stories so memorable and impactful.

So the next time you need to communicate something important - like what your product can do for customers - don't just rattle off a bunch of bullet points.
Craft a narrative that allows your audience to envision themselves as the protagonist, overcoming challenges and achieving their goals with the help of your solution.

Entertain them, yes. But more importantly, help them forge an emotional connection to your messaging through the timeless art of storytelling.
That's how you'll create content that genuinely sticks.

Because at the end of the day, people don't buy features. They buy narratives they can see themselves living out successfully.

How long does it take someone to figure out if your product is for them?

A lot of advertisers get lost in cleverness and concept and end up burying the lede.

As ad platforms become more automated, this flashy use of your creativity may start to backfire.

If you have a specific audience, and you write a killer ad that stops EVERYONE's scroll, meta and linkedin won't be able to get you results.

Here is what I do to ensure that my creative is working with my offer and targeting.

I don't do this for every client, but it's a test concept that I've seen some great traction with.

I call it "unmistakable creative". The idea is that no matter how little time someone spends looking at an ad, they will get a good impression of what you are offering and who you are offering it to.

If they aren't in that group? they will scroll, and the platform will know they are a bad fit. 

If they are in your target group? On average they will spend more time reading the ad, and they are WAY more likely to click.

The image you use needs 3 elements to be correctly tailored to your audience:

- Clear persona callout
- Value statement/question
- Offer description

If you have a good offer and you know your audience well, these ads will absolutely crush it when compared to any high falutin cleverness.

They will take less time than the creative you currently make, and yes, they will be borderline cringey. But when you put clarity first, you can establish your audience and offer signals with no confusion about what variables are effecting performance.

Example below. Comment "Unmistakable" for a link to a free ungated guide that shows you exactly how to make these ads.

5 reasons you will fail at building your personal brand on LinkedIn in 2024:

1. You confuse self-promotion with value sharing.

There's a fine line between tooting your own horn and providing insights that genuinely help your audience. Too many people use personal branding as an excuse for shameless self-aggrandizement rather than sharing expertise. Don't be that person in 2024.

2. You spread yourself too thin.

I get it - you want to establish omnipresence and rack up those vanity metrics. But mindlessly spamming every platform dilutes your messaging and undermines authenticity. Pick a couple core channels you can actually nurture and focus your efforts there.

3. You never evolve your content strategy.

The Linkedin landscape is constantly shifting. Playing it safe with the same stale formats and topics puts you at risk of blending into the noise. Regularly reassessing what resonates (by looking at data, not just gut feel) keeps you ahead of the curve.

4. You don't make good points.

Look, production quality and clickbait only get you so far. At the end of the day, your personal brand should showcase unique expertise and insights. If you aren't actually saying anything new or valuable, you're just wasting everyone's time - including your own.

5. You try to go it alone.

Personal branding is about establishing a dialog with your audience and industry peers. If you silo yourself and ignore potential collaborators and mentors, you'll rob yourself of perspective. Take the time to engage with others on a human level.

The real litmus test for personal brand success? 

Creating an authentic connection with your desired audience. Not racking up likes or comments from strangers, but fostering relationships that lead to mutual growth and opportunity.

Nail that in 2024, and the rest will follow. Chase empty metrics at your own risk.

My honest, unfiltered thoughts about demand generation in 2024:

For years, we've operated under the delusion that demand is something to be manufactured, stimulated, and optimized for.

We build funnels and nurture sequences. We map the buyer's journey to a science. We create demand generation engines, feeding off a steady diet of MQLs and SQLs.

But I'm starting to think this entire paradigm is flawed.

What if demand already exists for every product and service, flowing organically like currents in the ocean? What if our job isn't to generate demand, but to simply read those currents better?

Too many businesses are stuck paddling furiously upstream, expending resources to bludgeon prospects over the head with their offering. All the while, prospective buyers are drifting by effortlessly downstream, ripe for whoever resonates naturally.

I've seen this misalignment firsthand recently while auditing demand gen programs. The campaigns predicated on manufacturing demand consistently underperform those simply aligning with existing mindsets and behaviors.

Counterintuitive? Maybe. 

But it's emblematic of a bigger shift I'm noticing across the marketing landscape.

The future's best practitioners won't be the slickest funnel hackers or acquisition wizards. They'll be micrologists – professionals studying the granular undercurrents that indicate existing demand.

By tuning into search queries, online interactions, community discussions, and consumption patterns, they illuminate the real motivations of their prospects. That's a far more powerful foundation than any retrofitted funnel stage.

From there, it's about dismantling internal marketing bloat and removing friction. Greasing the pathways and empowering prospective buyers to effortlessly flow in your direction.

Sure, we'll still need mechanisms for capture and conversion once someone expresses interest. But that's just the final 10% of the equation.

If you want to remain competitive in this rapidly shifting environment, ditch the obsolete demand gen rhetoric and reframe your mindset.

Because in 2024, the most valuable skill you can possess is seeing the currents – not trying to disrupt the entire river.

It's all about these competitor research files I have been making for clients for about 3 years.

I've been told that competitor research like this isn't useful, but I think there is a disconnect.

Even if you want run your own race, even if you create a category, there are going to be people trying to reach the same ICP as you.

Yes, a competitor research file is nominally about your competitors. But its really about your customers and potential customers. 

I've never presented one of these files to a client and instructed them to copy what their competitors are doing.

In fact, I usually tell them how they can zig where the rest of their niche is zagging.

One of my best-performing posts on Linkedin in 2022 wasn’t written for Linkedin.

It was my last post of the year, and while I’d love to say it performed well because of immaculate planning, or on-message copy, I’m not exactly sure that’s it.

The funny thing is, It was:
Low effort
Improvised in the moment,
A recycled idea.
I originally wrote it as a reddit comment.

Someone had asked a question about building marketing ops for their SAAS startup.
No budget
No funding
Founder-led
The OP was looking for strategies to bootstrap their organic growth without breaking the bank, and I broke down what I would try to do if I was in their shoes.

Then, without thinking much of it, I copied it, changed the beginning to make it feel more general, and posted it here.

I think the key insight here is Q & A format.

If you have knowledge or a skill, and you are stuck trying to write about it, find some questions.

Because even if no one sees the original question, the format of “an answer” RESONATES.

So next time you find yourself answering someone’s burning question about your discipline, remember that your answer is better content than 99% of what you would come up with staring at a your strategy outline and waiting for an idea to come.

Now don’t let this one go viral, or it will ruin my theory that anecdote posts don’t perform.

Active reading.

Every ad, website, and email from a major player in the saas world holds a lesson.

They are all made with a goal in mind and written with a purpose.

So by actively critiquing and analyzing them, I am giving myself a crash course.

I make a lot of reports in hubspot. Before I even open the reporting tool, I use this template to cut 80% of my work out and get right to the heart of the issue.

This works for the vast majority of reports, and it's true in other analytics software, it just matches up PERFECTLY to hubspot.

Every report has a few elements:

- Object
- Metric
- Filter
- Date property

So say we want to see deal amounts, but only for deals in a specific pipeline that entered the "closed won" stage last month, and only the ones sourced from paid social.

Object  = Deals
Metric = Dollar amount(usually "deal amount in company currency", but could be custom in some cases.
Filter = Orginal Source (paid social), Pipeline (sales pipeline)
Date Property = "Date entered closed won".

Now by just delineating those fields, I know I am going into the single-object report builder, using deals from the sales pipeline. I am using the filter dialog (top left corner once your building the report) to filter for original source = paid social and pipeline = sales pipeline. 

I am also switching the date filter from "create date" to "date entered closed won" and then selecting "last month."

Very often people go into the tool with a verbal description of what they need to show in a report. 

For the case above, many of us may be able to parse it and build the report anyway. 

But once you are dealing with multple object associations and a few different metrics and filters, it gets muddy. 

At the end of the day, the four elements above will help you cut through the noise. 

If you want to get extra fancy and save a tiny bit more time, take note of the visualization you prefer.

We are entering the age of the freelancer in marketing, demand generation, and rev ops.

In-house hires and agencies are becoming woefully disadvantaged?

Why you ask? I'll tell you.

Productivity software.

Just 10 years ago, while many project management tools were available, they weren't universally understood. Hiring an agency that could "plug in" to your business was a pretty easy way to go.

Or you can hire a full time employee, train them once, and you can benefit from that training for years.

The way we work with eachother is being standardized. This increases the importance of specialization, and decreases the importance of working under a unified banner.

The same CMO who might have had a much easier time hiring internally or working with an agency can now hire specialized freelancers for any given task. They already know how to use clickup and asana, and these tools make the onboarding and execution of the work seamless.

This is why you're seeing a renaissance of niche personal brands on linkedin.

Leadership can handle one problem at a time, and instead of an extended engagement with a full time hire or "do it all" agency, they can hop from freelancer to freelancer, with each freelancer being a FOREMOST EXPERT in the one task they have been hired to do.

Furthermore, solo freelancers are gaining ground in productizing. This allows them to stop selling their time, and start selling specific, repeatable deliverables.

And then leadership asks itself a simple question every time they have a problem to be solved.

For metaphor's sake, lets say the problem is their business needs arterial surgery. 

Would you hire a general practitioner for that? Or someone whose entire online presence revolves around their expertise in arterial surgery?

15 step plan to mastering LinkedIn organic reach in 2024:

1. Ditch the content calendar. You're operating in real-time from here on out.

2. Set your alarm for 5am. This is when you'll create with fresh energy and mental clarity.

3. Spend the first two hours ingesting the top comments and questions your audience left overnight.

4. For each one, record a candid video response directly in the LinkedIn mobile app. Don't overthink it - just make good points.

5. Posts those raw videos natively, with light trimming and captioning added. Forget heavy editing.

6. Immediately share the native videos across any relevant groups, hashtags, and community feeds.

7. As interactions pick up, jump back into the comments and keep the conversation flowing via video replies.

8. At day's end, package your 5-7 best Q&A video exchanges into a micro summary post. Title it compellingly.

9. While posting the summary, identify your most engaged commenters and send personal connection requests.

10. Rinse and repeat daily. Developing cadence and consistency is everything.

11.Every 3 weeks, transform your meatiest Q&A videos into a gated content asset for email capture.

12. Stay maniacally responsive to new followers and subscribers. They're holding you accountable.

13. Check in periodically to ask what else your audience wants to learn. Fulfill their content requests.

14. Become an über-commenter with value-additive perspective in adjacent spaces you're pursuing.

15. Foster purposeful collisions and reciprocal value exchanges. This approach hinges on genuine relationship-building.

Is this an exhausting process? You bet. 

But posting into a void is far more draining. Play the organic game properly in 2024, and your results will compound exponentially over time.

I studied the top AI-powered martech and here's what I discovered:

Like many of you, I've been inundated with AI hype over the past year. Every founder, salesperson, and marketing chatbot is touting their tech as the cure for inefficiency.

But how much of it is smoke and mirrors? I decided to go deep on some of the products promising biggest AI-fueled gains.

After auditing their platforms, reading real user reviews, and speaking with clients, a few patterns emerged:

First, the truly impactful AI isn't solutioning for solutioning's sake. It's enhancing existing workflows and alleviating intense operational bottlenecks.

Take HubSpot's new AI tools for example. They automate rote tasks like data entry and follow up sequencing. Mundane but essential processes now happen automatically.

That said, I wouldn't call most of what I saw true artificial intelligence. A lot of it is advanced machine learning — algorithmically excellent but not self-aware.

The solutions providing the biggest advantages combine AI/ML with a robust data architecture and unified customer view. These operate less like rigid software and more like adaptive co-pilots.

Pieces is a prime example of this. 

Their platform parses unstructured information and autonomously packages insights tailored for individuals on the other end. It's artificial intuition derived from deep data mapping.

On the flip side? I encountered plenty of disjointed point solutions using buzzwords to mask mediocrity. They achieve specific tasks well enough. But they're also a headache to integrate and manage.

The takeaway? Don't grab the first AI product that lands in your inbox. Leading solutions don't treat AI as a bandaid.

Prioritize systems with synergistic layers of intelligence — spanning data handling, decisioning, process automation, and ad servers. That's where you'll find efficiencies compounding over time.

Piecemeal scripts and add-ons may scratch a short-term itch. 

But they'll also create tech debt and hinder scale. In 2024, it's adapt or asphyxiate.

If you know me personally, you’be heard me wax philosophical about productivity systems. 

From late 2021 to early 2023, I spent untold hours building my “productivity machine” in notion. 

Not gonna lie, it was cool as f*ck. 

But it had a few missing pieces of functionality, one main one being offline access. 

So last year, I painstakingly migrated over 2000 notes and files into Obsidian. 

Let me be clear. I love notion to this day. I also still really like obsidian. 

But now, 90% of my notes, bookmarks, drafts, and productivity files are on apple notes.

Why the second change? One factor was the offline/online distinction again. Obsidian sync is barely usable from a phone. Especially with a vault like mine filled with data view queries and plugins. 

The other factor was that I had started to spend a lot of time on upkeep and buildout. 

Notion and obsidian are like virtual legos. It’s fun to build stuff. And in my mind, it was ok that I was spending that time, because it all contributed to my “second brain” productivity machine. 

Now, with apple notes, I spend almost no time maintaining my database. 

I use basic tags and embeds, and the note linking feature is the minimum viable option to build the interlinking I have once relied on. 

What do I do with the extra time? I actually write, review, and edit the notes in my database. I actually move things through my project pipelines. 

Do I have a sick dashboard that shows my progress on various tasks? No. 

Do I have a sweet ai plugin that allows me to ask my database questions ? No. 

And sometimes I miss things. Obsidian’s canvas tool is incredible, I still use it for just that.

Notion’s template links are great,
I still have several available on my
Gumroad account. 

But I don’t spend several hours per week on “the machine”. 

Because I have accepted a simple truth:  

This “machine” won’t solve my problems, writing and keeping track of my thoughts on various topics will.

If I had to guess at one company who had put more time, effort, and data into their homepage, It would be Unbounce.

So I analyzed it from a messaging perspective in this week's issue of TouchPoints.
