Starting from a short trip to Macao next to my hometown Hong Kong, I was already fascinated with the local culture, most obviously via food and architecture, influenced both by Portuguese and Chinese culture. From the terracotta army in Xian, to the idyllic countryside in Hokkaido and the intricate architecture of Budapest, I was already deeply impressed with the richness and diversity of cultures at a young age, which has motivated me learning new languages and eventually taking this path in my university studies. Even though I might have picture of a certain culture in my mind via books or films, or even have set foot into the country, as I encounter new people of different backgrounds, I realised how little do I know. Knowing my weaknesses and limitations does actually, motivate and open my mind greatly to new experiences and opportunities. As I started my Bachelor's on German and European Studies in Hong Kong, later an exchange year in Gießen, Germany and then my Master's on Intercultural Communications and European Studies in Fulda, my post-secondary years were exceedingly stimulating, including learning new skills, exploring new realms (both physically and figuratively!) and gaining a group of precious friends. The experience was, and still is humbling too and can be summarised in this German proverb: Es ist noch Luft nach oben- There's always room for improvement. Apart from learning about social research, international organisations/relations as well as European integration (everything's constantly changing and evolving!), the most important is to stay flexible, curious and humble. This also includes respecting diverse voices via active listening, empathy and fostering understanding regarding everyones' own circumstances, as well as constant self-reflection- a monotonous world is nowhere enjoyable to live in.
