Research Area: Atmospheric and environmental physics. In a Canadian Space Agency-funded project, we combine satellite measurements and a high-resolution model over Canada to address two main questions about Canadian air quality and greenhouse gas emissions: 1. How well can satellite measurements of carbon monoxide (CO) constrain Boreal forest fire emissions and improve the current state-of-the-art Boreal fire emissions models? and 2. How well can satellite measurements of methane (CH4) reduce uncertainty on Canada’s anthropogenic methane emissions?

Teaching:
GEOG 2402 (Hydrosphere) - examines the physical processes and the environmental factors that govern the movement of water and energy in lakes, rivers, oceans, and the soil-plant-atmosphere continuum. The course focuses on the interdependency of water and energy in the Hydrosphere. It combines a theoretical understanding of the Hydrosphere with applied field science through lab data collection and analysis.

GEOG 4205 (Climatology of High Latitudes) - studying processes of energy and moisture exchanges in polar regions with emphasis on the Canadian north. Topics considered include atmospheric and oceanic transport of energy, surface microclimate and the sensitivity of high-latitude environments to climate change.

Laugh all you want, I still use an iPhone XS from 2019. But two grant requests put it in perspective.

Reviewing Prince Casper Foundation Impact Grant applications is a wild lesson in priorities.

In one pile: A request for a new iPhone ($1,000-$1600) for online tutoring. In the other: A request to build a canoe for 200+ underserved children in Makoko, a floating slum in Lagos, where 70% of kids aren’t in school, often because they have no safe way to get there.

The irony? While reading the grant applications, I glanced down at my ‘ancient’ iPhone XS (Released in 2018, currently valued at ~$250).

This contrast makes the Foundation’s mission crystal clear. One applicant is passionately tackling a critical, life-changing barrier for an entire community of 200+ children. The other is asking for a $1,000+ luxury item for “tutoring,” which, next to the canoe, feels hollow and self-serving.

The difference in thoughtfulness, scale, and a genuine desire to serve is staggering. That’s the work of the Prince Casper Foundation: seeking out those high-impact, passionate teachers who truly unlock human potential.

I’m keeping my XS until it stops working or Tim Cook issues an arrest warrant for those of us still using it. Whichever comes first!

Right now, students in rural Nigeria are learning science without labs. They are learning to read without books. 

They are showing up to school hungry and thirsty. The gap between their potential and their reality has been too wide for too long.

For many of these young boys and girls, their ambition hits a wall even before the first bell rings. In Agbowa-Ikosi, 300 students may dream of becoming doctors but have never looked through a microscope. In Araromi, a broken borehole leaves 600 children thirsty and unable to focus. 

At Aliyu Bununu Primary School in Bauchi, learners sit on the bare floor. In Ijesha, bright students stay home, too embarrassed to attend school because their uniforms are torn.

The talent is there. The resources are not.

But where others saw impossible barriers, a group of 23 extraordinary educators saw a challenge to be conquered. They didn’t just teach; they innovated. They didn’t just wait for help; they built the plan.

Today, we are proud to stand alongside them. We are excited to unveil The Impact Class of 2025, the inaugural cohort of the Prince Casper Impact Grant, who are transforming bold ideas into essential realities.

From building functional biology labs and repairing critical water infrastructure to sewing uniforms and powering classrooms with solar energy, these 23 winners are not just receiving a grant. They are dismantling the barriers that stand between rural students and their future.
