Metamodeling and data modeling

When providing advice for clients I have often encountered data modelers that think of our metamodel as a data model. It is a very fair assumption. However, I argue that it is not really the case. At least, not if you are thinking about it in a traditional data modeling mindset of conceptual, logical and physical modeling of data. Applying that thinking in a knowledge graph powered data catalog would result in a very detailed, canonical data model. And that is not the purpose of our technology - that would be the purpose of a very (too) ambitious data modeling tool, that I am persuaded would fail. Canonical data models are a thing of the past, as e.g. Zhamak Dehghani states in Data Mesh. Instead, what we want to allow is an ontology (the generic metamodel) that can manifest itself in a graph of naturally, i dare even say intuitively, structured enterprise data. Structuring the domains of the business of the absolutely most vital exercise here, and they can be defined via capabilities, processes and value chains. Anything stable, Angus Moir ;-)

However, data modeling can indeed be abstracted into metamodeling and a plethora of books describe this. And that approach is right on in many cases. But, as I see it, it’s an approach that misses the point for knowledge graph powered data catalogs. 

I’ll be looking more into this topic going forward. How would you distinguish between metamodeling and data modeling
